The omicron variant, which was designated a covid-19 variant of concern by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 26 November, has triggered travel restrictions, a race to accelerate booster vaccination programs, and renewed calls to address vaccine inequity. Currently, it is unknown how efficiently the Omicron variant can spread from person to person. The replacement of Delta by Omicron as the predominant variant in South Africa raises concerns that the Omicron variant may be more transmissible than Delta.
