Hi Joe TrueNas will not dedup any data already on the dataset when you enable that setting, best option is to enable before any data is moved to the dataset then all files that can will be deduped as they are copied.
Thank you for the video Joe. I use FreeNAS/ TrueNAS on physical old servers at my work because I am a cheapskate and I hate throwing things away. TrueNAS works wonderfully for me, but I always struggle to get it to link properly with AD accounts. Your video gives me a possible of attacking the issue of shares for Windows 🪟 environments 🤪
Have you considered using DeDup with Windows 2019, ReFS and Hyper-V? It does not require a lot of memory and works well. All my server VM's takes next to nothing on my storage. With the Dedup schedules you decide when and how to optimize the storage. :-)
Thank you so much! This tutorial is exactly what i'm looking for. I had a lot of trouble how to get my hard drives into truenas. My Setup is a old Dell T20, Xeon V3 1230, 32Gb Ram, GTX970, 2x SSDs, 2xWD Red. Sometimes i like to play games, and also want a fast NAS. So i stuck with Windows 10. I tried a lot to get both witch one physical machine. With your help i get it! :). Can you explain what is the best procedure If one WD Red failed (hopefully not)? Shutdown the VM, shutdown the bare metal, change the physical WD Red, boot up, and whats after that? Add a new scsi drive in hyper-v, start truenas and truenas restored automatically my data and the mirror raid?
Hi great video!, i'd like to create a second vm hosting proxmox that should use this truenas share; should be better create other types of true nas share to use that one inside poxmox vm? many thanks
Ok Im on win10 pro I follow your way of preping the HDD. But the VR will not accepted them after install . It keeps saying they are pass-through drive. Any ideas 4 a fix?
Deduplication requires a butt load of ram, I have it on my home server running dual socket 1356 xeons with 196GB of ram. With deduplication enabled I was using more than half my ram for zfs idling.... up to 190 when transferring over samba, but it was also transferring over 10gig lan. The more ram you give zfs the better. Also I would take a poke at truenas scale. Scale will be Linux based and have way better virtulization and container support compared to freeBSD. Also all the work is already done for you with Linux you just need to know the git repository.
Hi, Thank you for the tutorial but I get an error straight after I try to attach new physical drives. An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s). Checkpoint operation failed. Production checkpoint cannot be created. Cannot take checkpoint. ...... Cannot take checkpoint for 'TrueNAS' because one or more pass-through disks are attached. Could you please help? Thank you in advance.
3 years later and this was super helpful. Thanks!
Same here
Glad it helped!
Hi sir, thank you for the sharing. It’s helpful.
Greetings from Brilon - Germany. Thank you for the video Joe.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The question now, what is better and safer, run Truenas in a VM in Windows or run Windows in a VM in Truenas?
Can you please answer this channel admin???

interesting synchronization with 'background music' and 'key generation'
Greetings from Lisbon - Portugal
I'm waiting for dedup testing. Thanks for this video.
Thank you so much for your great video. I able to install it on my win10 . Thank you !
Glad it helped

awesome vid on how to pass thru offline hdd wtf amazing. I got some experiments to do now
I was combing the TrueNas forums and some said you can't pass PCIE data through hyper-v. Not sure if that's true but how would your 10g NIC work?
Thank you sir, yesterday I installed trueNAS 12 in Hyper-v but can't find any hard disk recognised , this video very helpful 😃

Thanks for this information, I forgot that Server 2019 has this built in.

@John Mark Dougan What kind of BS is this? Why do you spread such fake news? What's wrong with you?

I am trying to find an answer to you video title's question. Is it because you couldn't get it to work on bare metal?
nope, just wanted to get it running as a vm

I did this using Server 2019.
@@UnkyjoesPlayhouse 👌 thank you
Dark side !!! Yes !!!
I've used on VMware workstation for testing but probably wouldn't trust it for Daily use

OK, somehow I did work after few tries...
@@RadoslawKaminski it is not working on my case, any idea ?
Nevermind, I disabled snapshots on my VM
When I attached the drives to truenas, I get a checkpoint operation failure error
I have no idea, sorry.
You need to disable the checkpoints option
Why don't you just install truenas-core on the system as normal? Share the install problem you did get.
I can only add one hardrive it wont see the other drive.
