This is the first video I’ve watched on this channel. It could have been 2 hours long and it would have only made me happier. The amount of effort to make this video is not lost on me so a very sincere thank you! You’ve got a new subscriber from up here in Alberta, Canada.
I was at the range this morning at sunrise, shooting my custom Ruger 10/22. The redbirds were chirping in the trees behind me. I enjoy your videos, and I like that you appreciate the sounds of nature, and the smell of gunpowder. Life is beautiful.
I really enjoy your 22cal videos. Such a great wealth of information. Thank you so much for putting in all this time and effort for the rest of us to learn from.
Thank you for the video! This is one of the best tuner videos I have found. Specially since I've been looking at one of these Harrells' for my Anschutz. Considering the price and availability of good ammo now days. Seems like a tuner is a requirement in order to have a decent day at the range (practice and fun) and avoid the overwhelming frustration, thus shooting worse as the days goes and frustration mounts, ;-). Makes me think I can use my giant case of Federal Gold Medal for practice and save the Tenex and Center-X for actual competitions. Once I get the settings recorded for each I can just readjust, verify and have fun. Without going bankrupt just practicing. I'll save the high end ammo for competition.
Thanks for the video. I know you kept saying it was longer than you’d like. I’d rather see the struggles you had so when I’m at the range having the same struggles I know it’s all apart of the process.
Thank you sir. outstanding video. I just started playing with a .22 after plinking for years. I purchased the Bergara BMR carbon and mounted an Arkin EP 5 on it. I'm shooting 1/2 inch and better at 50 yards. I just put a Timmy hit trigger in and I am considering a Harrel an EC tuner. My sons are beginning to compete. I doubt I get into competition, but I can go out and shoot with now and then. God Bless and keep the videos coming.
Thank you YOU CAN go out and compete and guess what it doesn't have to be against anyone else just yourself. Even if you decide to go out to match it is totally ok and you will be welcomed.
I have one on my 24" 6.5 Grendel gas gun. I got the 2 port brake an tuner. I had factory ammo stacked deep. It really works using match ammo, SST an ELD bullets. FMJ ammo, can't really tell
Try the Hopewell method to tune. You are using an AR style tuner and not the true rimfire tuner. Although that will work it needs to be adjusted with a modified Hopewell method. This style tuner has 10 increments per revolution where the true rimfire has 25 increments per revolution. I have this style tuner on AR's and use the Harrell and J&L rimfire tuners on all the rimfires. Yes they help but you will need to adjust for change in ammo brands and velocities. Hopewell method is 10 shots into one target with 2 shots per revolution. Target 1 will be from 0 to 040, target 2 will be 040 to 080, target 3 will be 80 - 120 and target 4 will be 120 to 160. Yes you can get 160 even though not marked you can estimate. Now go back and look at your targets and select the smallest vertical stringing. Readjust the tuner to the lowest setting of that target group and start with 5 round groups adjust the tuner one turn and move targets for another 5 rounds until you get to the highest tuner settings for the selected group. Now look at the targets again and select the tightest group. Move to that setting and fire 5 shot group. Rotate 1/2 turn either direction and shoot another group at a fresh target. Move tuner 1/2 turn in the opposite direction from start setting and fire another 5 round group. Look at targets again and see which one is tightest group. Now you can decrease increments by 1/2 and continue tuning till you get the best possible shot group. I have found 1 increment can change the POI enough to throw you into a tizzy. Nice thing about this style tuner is you can go to minute adjustments where Harrells rimfire tuner stops you on a hard increment due to the detent. End result is if your rifle is setup properly the tuners will increase accuracy buy finding the barrel node point at the end. Please note that tuners do not compensate for lateral stringing. That is a shooter problem. When tuning you need to be the only one tuning. No help, no changing shooters and constant atmospheric conditions.
I have found that if you weigh your shells and get them as close as possible to the same weight that it reduces the flyer by quite a bit. You can use any weight system because you are not concern about the weight but getting them with in the same weight. Hope that works for you. Thanks a lot for the videos that you put up here I enjoy them a lot.
Hi Bob, you are on the right track weighing your ammo. If you wish to improve your skills and understanding further. As a recommendation and hint, read into the effects of DA (Density Altitude) and the effect altitude and temperature have on the projectile. Good luck and have fun : )
Great videos and info on a never ending quest for the perfect group. I’m also a tinkerer and should stick with the same ammo but I don’t and the tuner is my next toy I think. I wonder if sorting that SK ammo would have made a noticeable difference in those groups. Anyway, thank you very much for your time and passion for our sport.
Luther I am not going to touch that sorting comment, I have already been run out of town with pitchforks previously LOL ruclips.net/video/kQ1_BJ8TDXg/видео.html and dayattherange.com/?p=6205
i heard that barrel tuners can work pretty good but you still have to have ammo that is consistent enough to make it work. Need a good ammo that maybe the barrel doesnt like that still has good SDs and ES and can probably bring the groups tighter
It was a pleasure to watch this intelligent presentation, though I must agree with your wife; all those groups are terrible considering the pricey equipment you employed. Perhaps it would be prudent to try a different brand of ammo. I would like to see a follow-up to this, if you do.
If you want a good barrel tuner a limb saver deresonato and you don't have to worry about all that stuff collecting in your barrel and the limbsaver works if you want a good barrel tuner
Mr. Revolver Guy you can`t make every person happy so just make yourself happy. Most people can see you are a very trust worthy person so let the others talk and just enjoy what you are doing.
I think no matter what you tune your rifle barrel for it will change a little as you increase or decrease your distance sort of like adjusting the nozzle on a water hose.
I performed this same test with a tuner I made on my lathe. The test rifle was a bone stock Savage FVSR that isn't really accurate to begin with and the short barrel didn't respond to the tuner very well. To say the least it was exasperating but in a fun way. I found I could make the rifle shoot worse more easily than better by making coarse adjustments like you did. I found a sweet spot and went back to it and pulled off a couple of one hole groups with some Wolf Match ammo but ran out of it and have never played with the tuner anymore. Then I found out that particular Wolf ammo isn't made also and I primarily shoot high velocity in the Savage anyway now for varmints and occasional long range steel targets. I wouldn't mind trying a better tuner on my 513 since it's threaded I regret now cutting the barrel back on it when I had it threaded I believe it was more accurate at it's full length.
I just purchased the Harrell Tuner. The Rimfire style. I am very interested if it can help my CZ 457 with cheap CCI SV it will be interesting. Thanks for the video.
That tuner is really going to come in handy for quick succession firing, to decrease barrel vibration movement between shots. That's why they say for AR-15!
Thanks, I bought the ATS tuner for my Bergara b14 r carbon fiber trainer. I had the same experience with Eley Club. Still trying to find the sweet spot
Great video , suggestion ......CZs are notoriously good at showing the effects of Rim Thickness and pressures .....it’s hard to see effects of tuning if Ammo has random pressures . Your left hand and left finger keep moving ... as well as your cheek position , I can tell by the space between the brim of your hat and the scope eyepiece during the shoot. I’m more worried about pressures on the Stock. Overall these are some of the most informative on the net. Try using a Laser to see your wobble and dry fire ...
with my 223 20" remington barrels I need to shoot 7 times, full revolutions everytime and I will find at least ONE good node to set Harrels tuner at. I have used all 16 revolutions technically 17 if you start at 0 and have found TWO and sometimes THREE good nodes so seven revolutions works just fine starting at 0 with a Harrels tuner my best five shot groups without and with have been reduced from 5/8" to 3/8" @ 100 yds.
Love your videos. I think you saved me the price of a tuner. You probably would have been better off with better ammo. Rifle match or Center X. Really appreciate what you do
How did you get interested in precision shooting? I love your comments, and the fact that you don't have a potty mouth. I love paper punching with my CZ 455 also.
Yes Big E exactly what I did, after working up to 150 then back down to the tightest group spot and start the fine tune by slight adjustments by hashmarks.
Hi Harrell I notice that you seemed to have trouble seeing through your scope with the safety glasses on, they are not a good thing to use when shooting as they tend to magnifier and distort the image that you see. We found this was apparent when shooting at the ranges here in Australia try using your ordinary glasses if you have them and you will have better groups.
Great video just ordered a tuner brake on seeing how well it worked for Will be well pleased if I can match your results with SK long range match in the Annie 1761
Thanks fella, great video as usual 👍don't compete myself, just having TOO much fun tuning and tweaking all sorts of ammo and ranges 🙂 Regards to you and your family.
What size threads does it require machining your barrel to? I have a Krieger 1.25" straight contour barrel. My builder doesn't want to thread the barrel any smaller than 1" x20. I'm looking for a tuner or tuner brake designed for .22LR rimfire with a 1.25" barrel
Great video, but will never have a shoot off with my two brothers ,(I'm the middle brother) Older brother doesn't do 22lr. Younger brother doesn't like competition.😯😩😞
Looks to me that your conclusion is your rifle does not like sk magazine... I'd try Rifle Match or ely Match .both are more in line what you would shoot in Competition
He's shooting a 22. No copper just lead, for center fire just get some bore tech eliminator and use a brush if you want, but not necessary. Good luck...
James I exchange emails with them told them the size of the barrel and thread pitch they replied perfect made to fit nothing to be done. It is a beautiful fit also
Just got mine. Looks great can't wait to get out and try it out this weekend. Super video! Please join my Michigan's Ruger 10/22 enthusiast page on Facebook. Come check out my tuner and share ideas. My tuner is specifically made for rimfire and looks a little different.

Thank You, It is so enjoyable to watch someone that never acts out his ego. Also can shoot and tells the real story
You are a pleasure to watch Sir ! Thank you for your videos.
Thank you appreciate you stopping by.
Interesting results with that ammo and tuner . Great fun once again to watch, and a great last group.👍
Very educational. I really enjoy this kind of testing. Thanks for putting in the time to do this. Not to mention the ammo!
Excellent, detailed video. Thanks for your hard work making this useful for all!
I‘m impressed….! 😳
Thank you for this great video.
I enjoy the videos. My dad was in the Marines too. He was on Guam with the Raiders early on. Thanks
You sure have one of the nicest 22 rifle collections and you make some great videos
Thank you for this video. I appreciate all the ammo I didn't have to burn to learn a bit more about the Harrell Tuner.
Thank you for the video! This is one of the best tuner videos I have found. Specially since I've been looking at one of these Harrells' for my Anschutz.

Need t chrono, and record each group
Great stuff! Love the 22 LR vids. Keep em coming. Thanks
Thanks for the video. I know you kept saying it was longer than you’d like. I’d rather see the struggles you had so when I’m at the range having the same struggles I know it’s all apart of the process.

You look comfortable! And that helps when shooting for sure. Another great video, thanks.
There's a PS to be added, may I suggest you build a small camra house for those wet days.
Man, don't be sorry, this is awesome information. I would like to see you do a ladder test while changing your torque on the action screws
I have one on my 24" 6.5 Grendel gas gun. I got the 2 port brake an tuner. I had factory ammo stacked deep. It really works using match ammo, SST an ELD bullets. FMJ ammo, can't really tell
Solid video, I’m on the path of research and I appreciate your sharing this us.
It's the wind ,your a boss with that rig.

Hey from Ireland . Keep your cheek on the stock till all shots fired hard to remember to do but helps with groups

i heard that barrel tuners can work pretty good but you still have to have ammo that is consistent enough to make it work. Need a good ammo that maybe the barrel doesnt like that still has good SDs and ES and can probably bring the groups tighter
Number 7 is where I would start.
good stuff here! I was really hoping you changed ammo and you did!

Tell that guy holding the target that there is nothing to be nervous about! Lol.
Lol
Yup may want to try a more consistent ammo. Tuning does not change with ammo brand, as long as bullet velocities are close. I enjoy your videos.
Good shooting. Ammunition can make a difference.
I just purchased the Harrell Tuner. The Rimfire style. I am very interested if it can help my CZ 457 with cheap CCI SV it will be interesting. Thanks for the video.

GAR Martin
I noticed when you have a flyer the bolt handle seems to move a little. Maybe the bolt is not quite in the fully locked position

Thanks for the video. Enjoyed every minute of it. Do you realize the rabbit hole adjusting a tuner you dug yourself into?😊
Now with the tuner the best for that ammo, get some class Ely ammo and retune
Great channel, great info! I use SK Magazine to baseline my rifles.
How did you get interested in precision shooting? I love your comments, and the fact that you don't have a potty mouth. I love paper punching with my CZ 455 also.
Thanks for the video I think I'm going to get one and try it! By the way what rest are you using, do you have a model number and a name?
Tune 0 and 7.... so 7 and 2 lines!!!!! Lovely... that last group after seasoning shots seemed close though
Yes Big E exactly what I did, after working up to 150 then back down to the tightest group spot and start the fine tune by slight adjustments by hashmarks.
Would love to shoot with u. Thanks. I agree, let’s find enjoyment with every shot and every day and every buddy
I wish you lived in my area, I'd love shootin' some 22lr out at the range with you!
500 rds = 100 bucks. It's a crime!
Both fliers were at the same poi. That indicates ammo to me, not the rifle, or the shooter. I've had this happen to me on occasions.
Great video just ordered a tuner brake on seeing how well it worked for
Will be well pleased if I can match your results with SK long range match in the Annie 1761
Very interesting. I wish you would have shot another 5 rounds in the next target to see if it was consistent.
very nice! Thank you.
Thanks fella, great video as usual 👍don't compete myself, just having TOO much fun tuning and tweaking all sorts of ammo and ranges 🙂 Regards to you and your family.
Thank you Dave same to you and your family sir

Getting stuck? So the wife still loves ya!!! Good too hear! Get her some flowers just cause!
For now anyways Big E 😂
Tuner is working great but ammo not so much. You need to use better more consistent ammo and retest for us...thanks for your time. Good job...
Where I'm from, "Harrell" is pronounced like "barrel".
Top channel for rimfire thank u
Humbled Vince thanks for the support sir.
In my humble opinion no "tuning" is required. Great shooting !
Hi Big Guy
It’s all about fun and bettering myself
I'm using the ATS tuner. Still trying to find the best setting.
Well I just place an order for the AR15 model. Let's see how it does.
Great video
Could you hear me hollering to go to 3 and see what it does?
Accurizing 22LR is tantamount to Sisyphus’s punishment and requires a masochistic personality type.
Great video, but will never have a shoot off with my two brothers ,(I'm the middle brother) Older brother doesn't do 22lr. Younger brother doesn't like competition.😯😩😞
What is the make of your front Bench rest you are using?
Flyers might be lead buildup in the choke...
Great! Now I need a tuner LOL!! :-D
Informative video! Thank you. Just Sub’d 👍🇨🇦
How in the world do you get the gun so quiet? I don't see a suppressor on your rifle.
I don't know how a tuner is supposed to work with inconsistent ammo. It isn't a magic bullet.
Good deal man. Thanks.
What kind of tuner is that? From which manufacturer?
DATR, is this now the Harrell Rabbit Hole ??.......... keep shooting !!
Kinda think a ammo change would help
Looks to me that your conclusion is your rifle does not like sk magazine...
I'd try Rifle Match or ely Match
.both are more in line what you would shoot in Competition
Hey how do I get some of those hostages target
Group 7
What scope are you using?
Sk mag does throw flyers. Good for field class not so good for serious fclass.
Think you are right was fun to try.
What does the tuner actually do? Or how does it work?
What do you do with rifles with lots of copper fouling? No bronze brush?
He's shooting a 22. No copper just lead, for center fire just get some bore tech eliminator and use a brush if you want, but not necessary. Good luck...
Nylon brush is the choice of most pro shooters
Which model tuner did you order? Did you have to get your bored out?
James I exchange emails with them told them the size of the barrel and thread pitch they replied perfect made to fit nothing to be done. It is a beautiful fit also
get some windflags and watch those groups shrink
Just got mine. Looks great can't wait to get out and try it out this weekend. Super video! Please join my Michigan's Ruger 10/22 enthusiast page on Facebook. Come check out my tuner and share ideas. My tuner is specifically made for rimfire and looks a little different.
Need let that bolt action go
Was this test at 50 or 100 yds??
Mr. Revolver Guy *shoots .27 group*
Also Mr Revolver Guy* with better ammo id get better results* sheeesh
After watching a ton of videos about rimfire tuners I've come to the conclusion they aren't worth it. Only worth it on high power centerfire.
As someone who uses a tuner for competitive shooting, I’m always happy to see my opposition NOT using one...
Big man if you could make one complete video without all your incessant gum bumping your testing would no doubt improve immensely. Lol Problem with this whole process is when you get it all tuned up it's going to be tuned to that scrap magazine ammo. Then you can turn around and do it all over again.
See how the Starik tuner is tuned. Same method applies for the Harrell tuner.
