Imagine being 18 in 1984 and driving home with the windows down on a beautiful midwest summer night about 10 PM and this coming on the radio. That happened to me, and I still remember the feeling. It was otherworldly.

For me I was pretty young, but I stayed home from school, sick, and kind of in a weird haze in the morning. My mom had the radio on getting ready for work. For some reason it always stuck with me, and I always wondered why. It didn’t seem significant. Guess it was just the music.

This too is a song that illicits the pining of better times past....I'm also adding 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' and Head Over Heels - both by Tears For Fears, Glass Tiger's 'Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone, and The Smiths 'How Soon Is Now?'

Take your baby by the hand
And make her do a high handstand
And take your baby by the heel
And do the next thing that you feel
    We were so in phase
    In our dance hall days
    We were cool on craze
When I, you, and everyone we knew
Could believe, do, and share in what was true
    Oh, I said
    Dance hall days love
Take your baby by the hair
And pull her close and there, there, there
And take your baby by the ears
And play upon her darkest fears
    We were so in phase
    In our dance hall days
    We were cool on craze
When I, you, and everyone we knew
Could believe, do, and share in what was true
    Oh, I said
    Dance hall days love
    Dance hall days
    Dance hall days love
Take your baby by the wrist
And in her mouth an amethyst
And in her eyes two sapphires blue
And you need her and she needs you
And you need her and she needs you
And you need her and she needs you
And you need her and she needs you
And you need her and she needs you

It isn't that much about whether it were the 1950's or 1970's but about being young, about being at the start of many possibilities, options, roads to possible success or happiness. I'm sure 40 or 50 somethings in 2070 will say the 2030's were damn fun....

December 1986- My friends and I read in a alternative/wave magazine that Wang Chung would be performing at Rainbow Music Hall in Denver, Co in Jan. 1987. We make the trek by car 125 miles from Sterling Co to Denver in a snow storm that was quickly turning worse. We get to Rainbow Music Hall to find out that the concert was canceled due to weather. We had called that morning and all was fine. We ended up eating at Wendy's and driving for five hours back to Sterling which would have normally taken two hours in good weather. That's my Wang Chung story.

Agreed 1000%. The 1980's music was so different from so many bands-- they seemed to use all the instruments they could get their hands on to layer the sound of a song-- used all the tools in the box, so to speak. Now-- not sure I hear anything different in any genre; country sounds the same, pop/rb/soul sounds the same and they use sampling, looping and autotune-- nobody is going to actually convince me they are musicians/singers learning their craft as much as they are convenience and routine. The 1980's are so far above what's going on today, and it's not even close.

The libraries at both my middle and high schools were also our public libraries. (Extremely small town..) A book was "redlined" when an adult would report that it was inapprioriate by age or just was 'questionable'. The recommendations weren't vetted in any way. The librarian simply took a red sharpie and drew a line through the shelfing tag. In other words most were verboten to us students on the advice of elderly women with a lot of cats and even more bitterness. Probably their racist book ever was Gone With The Wind...
I see these women behind the warning on this video.

Gabriel Sulmonetti Exactly! This was a fucking awesome time be a kid. Anyone who wasn't alive during this time could not understand it. The music and movies of the 80s are pretty much the best way to project those feelings. Not hating on GTA Vice City at all. They have really good taste in music. And glad youngsters have an outlet to learn about that special time/era in pop culture. There was such diversity and creativity in the 80s. I want to rip my ears off when I hear what's on the radio stations today.
