  • After 20 years of counterinsurgency and low-intensity warfare, the United States finds itself pivoting towards Asia and engaging in Strategic Competition with China. While there is vocal debate as to what this means, whether it is a new Cold War or something else, the fact remains that the Washington must prepare accordingly for what is largely unthinkable-conflict with China. This, then, necessitates a renewed approach to defense policy and military strategy. Offering a take that draws upon history and past strategy, “The Strategy of Denial” by Elbridge Colby offers a framework for understanding China’s strategy for the Indo-Pacific, and how the United States should approach this challenge defensively. Colby joins CSPC to discuss his book and this framework for thinking about China’s hegemonic ambitions, and what it means for Washington policymakers. Colby will be in conversation with CSPC’s Director of the Mike Rogers Center for Intelligence and Global Affairs, Joshua C. Huminski.
