Season 4 is more formulaic than Season 3 but not so much as to feel boring the way Season 5 does at times. It does contain the David Whitaker Dalek stories, which means it's doing something right! Troughton growing into the role is marvelous to watch, by Macra Terror I think he's fully become the Second Doctor we all know and love.
    My own ranking:
    1. The Evil of the Daleks
    2. The Macra Terror
    3. The Power of the Daleks
    4. The Faceless Ones
    5. The Tenth Planet
    6. The Highlanders
    7. The Smugglers
    8. The Moonbase
    9. The Underwater Menace

    60th Anniversary Doctor Who Marathon...Take 2
    "Season 4"
    TV stories
The Evil of the Daleks (10/10)
    The Highlanders (10/10)
The Power of the Daleks (8/10)
    The Faceless Ones (8/10)
    The Tenth Planet (8/10)
    The Macra Terror (8/10)
    Moonbase (8/10)
    The Underwater Menace (7/10)
    The Smugglers (5/10)
Like I said, in the retrospective for the First Doctor, I really didn't want him to go. His "senior moments" are such a part of his character that I never noticed an increase in them. Even in the Tenth Planet, I thought he was still the Doctor that had been in the role for the previous 3 years. I do realize that keeping Hartnell in the lead likely wouldn't have lasted much longer.
The Second Doctor starts strong and continues strong, however, I don't think he's had a breakthrough performance yet. I would say that he's at least as "dangerous" as the First Doctor, but he does have a layer of misdirected innocence to him. Really liked him in The Faceless Ones and Evil of the Daleks.
I'm not sure what the fan consensus is of the Highlanders, but I really loved the story. Unfortunately it's the last true historical of the TV series (outside of Black Orchid technically years later). They really should be brought back. I especially loved hearing the Doctor playing a "German" "doctor" and....I ALMOST felt sorry for Perkins. He and the Doctor...just too funny.
The best allies of the Tardis crew this season were Sam from the Faceless Ones, and Kemel from Evil of the Daleks. Most of the villains in this season really stood out. Except for the pirates in The Smugglers who were pretty dull. My favorite...um...there is no such thing as Macra, the Macra do not exist. I am happy to work, I am happy to obey! I am happy to be happy to be under my monster crab overlords...who do not exist. Happy...so happy...
    Big Finish
    The Yes Men (10/10)
    Resistance (10/10)
    The Locked Room (9/10)
    The Night Witches (9/10)
    The Forsaken (9/10)
    The Home Guard (8/10)
    The Selachian Gambit (8/10)
    The Plague of Dreams (8/10)
    The Outliers (7/10)
The Bonfires of the Vanities (5/10)
Big Finish really seemed to love placing Jamie, Ben, Polly and the Doctor in World War 2 era stories. Each I saw were quite good...but did we really need so many to be the same time setting. And I quite like World War 2 period history.
For me, Big Finish really helps Ben and Polly as characters. Especially Polly. She has a lot to do and Anneke Wills sounds pretty much the same that she did in the 60s. I also really like the stories of Steven as a former King.
