Actually, there are 3 kinds of cities in Indonesia: the traditional city, the Dutch city, and the modern city. The traditional city normally has city square like aloon-aloon in Java and Madura. The square is the central of the city, where the government, the central mosque and the palace sit. The market is at the opposite direction of the square, and at several cities in Java, there usually are secondary squares just at the opposite pole of the main square.
The Dutch cities like Jakarta, Bandung, Bogor, Semarang, Surabaya, Medan, or Ambon, they don't have central city square as aloon-aloon. The city squares are normally near government buildings, Dutch residences, or near market zone. The Dutch cities are also divided into several quarters. There are European quarters, Chinese quarter/Chinatown, Arab quarter, and the native quarters (usually in kampongs). Each has its own walls and administration. We still can see this in Jakarta (Old City), Surabaya, and Semarang.
The modern cities like in Jakarta (New City, Depok, etc), West Surabaya, or Batam, are in resemblance with American cities. There are blocks of real estates and skyscrapers, with separated zones: residences, commercials, and entertainments.

Btw, Malang city actually have nothing. But the Malang Regency (side of Malang) has so many places to explore. South of Malang, there are many kind of beaches, northwest of Malang (Batu) there are mountain, waterfall, & amusement parks, East of Malang also mountain area & many waterfall. Fyi...

I recommend tourist in malang use online application to order car/motorbike. It called Grab. The price isnt that high, and sometime the price is lower than angkot. And the main thing is you dont need to wait 5 minute, maybe around 1minute or more. Anyway have a good time here
Hello Ania :D Saya dari Filipina. So happy to found your channel here in RUclips when I was looking for new videos of UMM. Like you, I was also an intern for the international program of IRO in UMM but only for one semester in 2016 :) Nevertheless I also have very great memories of Malang and its friendly people except that I don’t like your typical “bule” lol I don’t look different from the Indonesians until I start talking.... :D Basically the advantage for me was I always had my “privacy” coz no one was interested to have photo with me and I can pretend to be a local in tourist attractions so I can have the local rate.

You can find many indonesian city square have fontain..this has been the particular prototype if the squre where fontain is placed right of the middle part of it while another part of it is connected with four line cemen paths to four direction
