@Sportsmusicgod he's been quiet over his Linkin Park review and many disagreed on his opinion and i agree it was mid as hell and reusing older material from past albums like Two Faced is just Figure 9 2.0.
This may not be old school hiphop, but the competitiveness and hunger on display is definitely something we desperately needed! Reincarnated and Dodger Blue were my favorites, and both Luther and Squabble Up was close.
"Dodger Blue" may be the shortest, but that shit slaps, easily the best on this album. I also love how Kendrick is using this to give traction to some underground acts. Also, yay, Roddy Ricch will be back on the Hot 100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MUSTARRRRRRRRRRRD!!!! Yeah, this might be a bold claim, but GNX is a top 3 album from me. Yes, I think it’s up there with “good kid, mAAd city” and “To Pimp A Butterfly.” It’s that good.
Reincarnated is my favourite Kendrick song in a good while, it's up there with U, and feels like a return to the more allegorical nature of some of the songs on Tpab.
I'll just copy and paste my review I made for this album on Instagram. As always, you provide a much more in-depth review ;) …Well, Mr. Lamar has had an eventful year eh? Jokes aside, the Kendrick vs. Drake beef was the biggest musical event of the decade thus far, and with Kendrick being my favorite rapper of all time and being consistently negative on Drake for the past 8 years, you can imagine the euphoria I felt for most of this year :) even if the beef has more complexities than a-lot of people realize. That being said, the Kendrick songs this year were already some of the best of this year, so I wasn’t expecting a new album until maybe next year even though I knew it was being worked on… then Kendrick drops an album out of nowhere on a slow release day with no build up or warning! After the initial shock, I gave the album a couple of listens and yeah this is pretty great and probably the most I’ve liked a Kendrick album since ‘DAMN.’! Though, not to discredit ‘Mr. Morale…’ or the ‘Black Panther’ soundtrack which are both good albums, but the former I respect more than I like and the latter is fun if not very distinct. However, I think ‘GNX’ takes the best elements of both albums to create an infectious West-coast flavored album with sticky hooks along with some really interesting introspective bars. From his reflection on TDE & the collapse of Black Hippy, his grappling with religion, and a-lot of his introspections and further jabs following the beef, Kendrick delivers all of this in his most vibey album to date that celebrates the West coast with pride. Also, as someone who loves West coast hip-hop, this album was great on sound alone with the producers and the features really deliver on the album (save for ‘gnx’), ESPECIALLY SZA, who I am glad to see working with Kendrick again. She sounded incredible on her tracks. Overall, the best songs compete with the already amazing songs he put out this year, and I think a-lot of people can get behind this album. It’s great to see Kendrick make a front-to-back fun album again, and this was a great victory lap. Rating: Strong 8/10 Best Songs: ‘wacced out murals’, ‘squabble up’, ‘luther’, ‘hey now’, ‘reincarnated’, ‘tv off’, ‘dodger blue’, ‘heart pt. 6’, ‘gloria’ Worst Song: ‘gnx’
I think a reactor who doesn't really fall under the traps you mentioned is Knox Hill. Despite not being Afro American he manages to appreciate and respect rap as a genre and every single detail being put interesting the song writing.
@smoov22_sonic oooh gotta check it out He analyzes almost every line of a lot of hip-hop songs. Most of Death of Slim Shady and the diss tracks, surround sound iirc. Hell he even goes past that sometimes like with Vampire and Apt
Honestly for what it is, GNX is still a solid banger despite the lack of cohesion of previous Kenny's albums. This might be the most pop he's ever been.
"Why wouldn't someone go to the police?!" said no one with even a slight familiarity with the LAPD.
Exactly. That's one of the biggest gangs out there.
Wow, I’m not even a Kendrick Lamar fan, but Spectrum Pulse putting out a GMX review before Fantano is something I never saw in the cards for 2024!
Or ARTV
This is an easier album to digest though
Oh look, a familiar face 🫣

@@DashieNegan41 same here I agree with ARTV
This review is so informed, well delivered and reverting.
Thank you

It and reincarnation are my absolute favorites on the album
This is one of the most comprehensive and articulate reviews I have seen done by any reviewer this year. Keep up the great work!
Kendrick Lamar 🤝 Sabrina Carpenter
The Short King and the Short Queen coming together to absolutely dominate the music scene of 2024! 😊
Jack Antonoff really bringing it for both this year!
Agreed
One of the best of an already packed year!
The moment you said you don’t like SWV I said “There’s the hater I know and love” 😂😂😂❤❤❤
Great review. Also why do I feel attacked by no SWV love and "lower your expectations" 😭

That moment caught me off guard, definitely 2nd to "dodger blue" for me
I agree tbh, it’s between GNX and Section 80 for that #3 spot
So Squabble up seems to be a Christmas song since the music video. Seems Mariah Carey might have competition for the number 1 This year.
Reincarnated is my favourite Kendrick song in a good while, it's up there with U, and feels like a return to the more allegorical nature of some of the songs on Tpab.
It's that and Dodger Blue for me
Fantastic review!! ❤👏🏽
2 years have passed and people still don’t get the masterpiece that is Mr Morale. Yes underground artists do better, nice one.
Gee, it's almost like I made a 40 minute video discussing the album at the time - I got it just fine

Honestly, I think it's my favorite Kendrick's album since TPAB, I really liked it
Good review, just a minor nitpick: it wasn’t flamenco singing. It’s mariachi, giving a nod to Mexican culture in LA.
So glad that Kendrick dropped that
Your writing is always so engaging
Great review keep it up 👍
Nice Review
🎉🎉🎉
King Kendrick dropped another AOTY again

unfamiliar with his reactions but Gentrify the City with him and Samad is a very good song
@smoov22_sonic oooh gotta check it out

It’s good album 👍
Couldn’t agree more, it’s absolutely his best since untitled

what score did u give it?
He doesn't do scores anymore. Hasn't for awhile now
Judging by him saying it's better than DAMN., in which he gave an 8 to, we can assume this is either a strong 8 or light 9.

You should give a rating
Why does a rating matter? Seriouslly art's value shouldn't be judged on numerical scale.
