Some Hindus even praised Khilji in Sanskrit texts - Medieval India’s complex power games

Medieval literary sources paint the period as one of ‘Islamic bigotry’ versus ‘Hindu resistance’... or do they? As much as the sultans tried to present themselves as Indian rulers in India, they also commissioned over-the-top narratives of conquest and destruction of “infidels”, meant for orthodox audiences in West Asia. But what was happening in India at the time? How did India’s ruling elites see the irruption of these new rivals? How did they present their warmongering, and who were their audiences? Anirudh Kanisetti explores the sources.

We should cherish philosophers like him. He is desi version of Jordan Peterson
@@adma7298 Don't compare him, a scholar, with Jordan Peterson, a social media figure.
leaps of logic maybe? Prithviraja-vijaya is mentioned as an exaggeration (which like almost all royal poetry it indeed was), but the same treatment is not meted out to this Yogishvara of delhi's statement. Surely both of them are through royal arm twisting or through economic incentives. Also not a historian but another crazy assumption I could spot in that representing the other book: its again patronage that decides such few articles/inscriptions amongst a few and not a norm amongst everyone. By this logic "Nityananda" would be picked up as a political leader and ruler of country as one could find 1/2 sources mentioning his so called "Kingdom" few centuries from today, well such is the peril of historians creating stories from predisposed PoV

In 1305, the Muslim Sultan of Delhi Alauddin Khalji captured Malwa, the Paramara territory. Ayn al-Mulk Multani, the newly appointed Governor of Malwa, was sent to expel the Paramara king Mahalakadeva from Mandu and cleanse that place from "the odour of infidelity".
Khilji was the first global champion of LGBT rights. His love affair with Malik Kafur is documented in Tarikh-e-Firozshahi. In Gujrat, he abducted “beautiful” maidens and children to give them a life of dignity. He thus removed the barriers of gender, caste, class and age, and let true love prevail in his empire.

You are correct, my dear 🤡 .
He should debate with pro hindu debator... then we can know if he is lying or not.
Pro Hindu debaters doesn't consider facts as facts. They present their feelings as facts.
Hinduism, Jainism survived and thrived while Zoroastrianism once the most dominant religion in middle east is nearing extinction, makes sense that these sultans only followed the persecution of convivence in India, devoid of funds and military support from the Abbasid caliphate (as it was nearing its own end) these Turkman sultans altho capable warriors lacked any administrative and social support and had to work with the Hindu locals to maintain and protect their own rule. Maybe a bitter decision for these sultans but still a necessary one.

Great to know UNTIL LATE 12TH CENTURY AT LEAST, White complexion didnt fascinate North Indians unlike today.
Seems Fair and Lovely owes its commercial success to Turkish, Khalaj, Afghan, Mongol and Anglo Saxon subjugation and NOT THE 'CASTE INSTITUTIONAL DIFFERENTIATION' introduced by the wretched 'CENTRAL ASIAN BRAHMANAS'.
Some Muslims also praise Savarkar and Modi. Sacred texts from BJP's minority wing written by intellectuals like Nighat Abbas and Shehzad Poonawala write "Modi is the only one who can bring world peace"...Can expect this written in history books some years later 😂
“For orthodox audiences in Central Asia…” this argument is getting rather tedious. By this standard, India’s entire anti-colonial narrative collapses as it’s largely based on accounts & accusations made by political rivals in London.
Excellent point made!
But the difference between those mediaeval Muslim rulers and today's conservative muslims is that
Those sultans weren't fundamentalists.
They loved songs, poetry, homosexual relations, paintings and as you said minting Lakshmi coins😂.
All of these things go against Islamic fundaments.
Nowadays these Saudi sponsored mosques in India preach and propogate fully fundamental values of Islam.
That's why there is this increasing friction today.
Just like Hindu society needs a renaissance, Muslim society should get inspiration from Liberal muslim rulers, rather than fundamental Islamic texts.
Not really
The only reason they minted Lakshmi coins is because the people of india would not recognise a sudden major change in currency after a foreign conquest.
What you want to say? Invaders were Angels !
Why selective accounts of a few scholars are alone used to contextualise any ruler? Why not take into account all available sources including the self admissions made by the rulers? Does that add too much context to make history not fit inside certain liberal narratives?
if he did then what content would he get to make video with? seems like basically he is parsing for some contradictory opinion and then he can question the established narrative and blow our minds. If they happen to be anti-brahmin and anti-sanskrit then that just is an added bonus.
Khilji created a just and an equal society. All his citizens were treated equally as long as they met a simple precondition of being Muslims. He promoted self help in society.
Khiljis were supported by best of hindu soldiers and generals
@@adma7298 like afghan general Hakim khan supporting Maharana Pratap
As if all Indian's were treated equally by their kings before coming of Khilji. 🙂
It’s unfortunate that in India, we still find it hard to believe that the invaders who wiped out culture and religion of their prized territory, where somehow not evil and bad for the society. Based on the praises written by the Chaatukars of the time, now we are finding a reason to create suspicion about the character, morale and ethics of the invaders.
Mindless explanation trying to paint that barbaric conquest was just not supporting upper class Brahmins. There is one easy explanation for praises conferred on Muslim rulers by some at the time of their conquest - praise to save ones own head.
The real way to understand the effect of Muslim conquests and successive British rule is
1. Economy - The richest country was reduced to shambles
2. Education - The first universities of the world were completely uprooted. Until the start of Muslim invasion, there were lot of contributions by scholars of Indian subcontinent and somehow it just stopped? Is it mere coincidence?
3. Culture - Temples were destroyed and looted and some how the architecture marvels just stopped.
People like these are the most dangerous than any terrorist coming from outside. They try to kill the very though and identity of existence.
sri madh mohamad ghori ..🙂 , as usual narrative builders were elites ..!! common mans life went on as usual whether the king/ruling politician was/is hindu , muslim or christian..!!
The number of times Anirudh uses the word “complex” to brush Islamic atrocities under the carpet is laughable😂😂😂
isn't it really shameful?
He brushed nothing off lol.
Anirudh can you give a talk about scientific method to history research. How do they interpret source data. How do they eliminate noise , what if source is one off .

Bit of trivia: Several branches of Prithviraj Chauhan and his clan converted to Islam and remained modest local kings till the Independence of India. They still have their remnant palaces and homes.
Or they are muslim converts who usurped the homes of the descendants of Prithvi Raj jChauhan which is much more the islamist modus operandi.

Great work. Need such honest things on regular basis to propagate the right history, to douse the flame of recent alien culture of bigotry and hatered, to save our legacy of mutual respect and coexistence in harmony as we used to be.
Mutual respect implicitly means respect from both sides. If khiljis rule was an expression of respect towards hindus then perhaps modern hindus should show the same type of respect shown by khilji using the same methods used by khilji...
by destroying hindu temples, burning nalanda university and also leaving his legacy behind which have become a national security threat for india. not used to soo much respect. You are doing a good job of narrating history even being abused for that in social media.
I don’t understand why people feel so upset about hindu past / Muslim invaders of India.
Man, there was no unified india before 1857. If I open history book all I see one king fighting another and taking over the territory. Ghori defeated Prithviraj man not the other kingdoms. I don’t understand our emotions with history which happened 700-800 years back
