Alta's Most Notorious Expert Run: Alf's High Rustler

- A run down the Alf's High Rustler trail at Alta, a demandingly steep run that requires lengthy traversing to reach. Access comes through one of two sketchy, thin-cover entries.
Alta is a Utah ski resort located in Little Cottonwood Canyon, just outside Salt Lake City. It's known for having some of the best quality snow in North America. Snowboarding is prohibited.

that dude at the top for sure absolutely rips
please don't swear
Maybe he doesn't want to destroy his skis.
It's never great when the snow makes that much noise, but you managed it well.
It skied amazingly today 2/9/23. The further entry was only a little sketchy, and the snow was fantastic. Nothing like in this vid.
Man there is so much snow there now 1-31-23 there are no rocks. Thanks for posting!
The one and only time I skiied Alf's High Rustler was on an April day with amazing spring corn snow that made the run (and the moguls thereon) relatively forgiving, though still quite a challenge. I would not even consider trying it again under the hard-snow (for Alta) conditions in this video.
“Shouldn’t be as bad when you get to the main part” famous last words
My Favorite Mountain.
I prefer Wildcat. Alf's you save for later. There's harder than Alf's just before it, Skier's Left.
Love Alta...I'd only attempt this on one if those bottomless days after they already have a 100 inch base! If I fall I want SOME potential for cushioning!
thats today... it was fantastic
Alta has 2,614 skiable acres and 55% of that is rated expert terrain. Snowfall average is 550” per year. They only list 119 runs but that includes some vast bowls that are accessible by going through Avalanche gates and long traverses. First time visiting skiers should know that Alta simply designates Green,Blue and Black ratings. They don’t do double black. Once you go through the Avalanche gate there are no trail signs. You got to know where to go. Where to some step up or where to drop in. I been fortunate to ski Alta since going there on ski vacation in 1989. Started skiing there full time in 2014. It does take a while to really know how to navigate the terrain. There are many places with rock bands and no fall zones. Best to ski in a group and have Avalanche beacon, shovel/ probes and rescue knowledge when going way out to ski area boundaries in deep snow conditions. It’s a lot different than skiing on marked runs with Patrol with reach.
Yeah I have been to Alta a few times but not knowing exactly where to go and skiing by myself the first few times I didn't experience the best of Alta...this last time I went back in early April the snow was great and with a few others that knew the place I finally felt like I now know where to go on very good days....and it has me excited for future Alta ski days.
What a crazy run. Where’s that famous Utah pow?
Sadly, we missed a foot of snow just after this visit! Those entries are always pretty patchy though.
@@PeakRankings The only thing more real than Alta powder is the awesome Cottonwood terrain. Great video!
did not "sound " like fun with all the ice. I wonder if the dude in the blue tux made it down without breaking a leg?
It,s a rush with fresh pow...
The only way to ski it really!
id love to send it down these runs lol, they look so gnarly man! im an aspen kid so im kinda crazy lol. i love bombing runs just like these. should i record my next season?
Record your sends and post them on you tube. Not enuff young guys sending it.
man those conditions look horrible
Dude, I don't think anyone down at the lodge was watching you or even cared.
Alta is sick, imo this is not the best skiing alta has to offer even by a longshot
It's an amazing run though. Long and steep and has a really awesome location on the mountain. I agree there is better and steeper but this is a great run
Last year sucked period.
When Alf’s doesn’t have a little bit of powder on it, it’s not worth the skidding and workout.
Only skiiable when there’s plenty snow. The entry point doesn’t look good at all.
LMAO at this video. This is supposed to be an iconic Alta run or iconic run for anywhere? This looks like absolute sh*t.
💯 %. Don't go to Alta. Overrated. Stay in CO or CA
If you haven't done it, you have no idea what you're talking about
Bro i ski this switch on tele gear
