      Jeff Sol "A World Champion Karjakin would have been a misunderstanding. After all, all 16 World Champions, starting with Steinitz, are remarkable players, and our chess world is proud of them. It would have been very strange indeed if a player such as Karjakin had outplayed an opponent of Carlsen's class. For such a sensation the stars in heaven really need to be in a seriously unusual constellation."
      That was Kasparov after Magnus retained the World Championship title in December last year. That really doesn't sound like bad terms. When they split, they both said that they would remain in contact and occassionally train together.

      Oscar Davila Kasparov is the only other player to have anywhere near as definitive a lead over his contemporaries as Fischer did, yet he did that for nearly 20 years compared to the 2 or 3 that Fischer did. It took nearly 15 years for anyone to top his rating, just like it took some 20 years for Kasparov to top Fischer, even with the advent of strong computers to help with training. Of course someone will, what an ignorant comment.

      @The Liquidator I've watched that part several times and I'm 90% sure the next word is "player", which if correct may be the only time in chess history that an immortal like Kasparov clearly believes that another legendary player was better than he. Interviewers try all the time to get this out of the greats to no avail, but Kasparov appears to put it in writing.

      hairy booty - I agree, the Fischer of 1971 and the Kasparow of the late 90s were probably the best players ever. I also rate the Carlsen of 2014 quite high. I wonder how the Lasker of 1900 would have performed today - let's say with a few months time of preparation with full access to all current chess databases . I guess he would also fare quite well, his talent was immense.

  • @owenivor

    If Fischer hadn't retired from competitive chess after winning the World Championship, sooner or later he would have played against a younger Gary Kasparov. And then sparks would have flew...

    • @euclideszoto997

      Didn't Karpov admit that at the time he didn't feel he could beat fischer then. Then after he won some pretty strong tournaments then he felt he was ready to play fischer as equal. I believe that Fischer would have beaten Karpov then but to let time go by as Karpov got stronger would have been a big mistake Fischer would have regretted if they had played but it is all heresay now.

    • @EGarrett01
      @EGarrett01 10 лет назад +133

      Euclides Zoto
      The Fischer who crushed the candidates and beat Spassky was not Fischer at his peak either. Chess players historically have their best performances in their mid-to-late 30's. Fischer's greatest domination would have been around 1979-1984.

    • @HenryMcGuinnessGuitar
      @HenryMcGuinnessGuitar 10 лет назад +19

      The Liquidator Well Fischer - if he'd held off his inner demons - might have faced both of them at some stage - and if Fischer had kept improving he'd have beaten both of them a few times. Eventually he'd lose of course.
      But then of course the development of the 2 Ks would have been different, having to face Fischer. Who knows how things would work out :)

    • @ksnooked5717
      @ksnooked5717 9 лет назад +92

      The psychological pressure of playing Spassky in 1972 must have been tremendous. One needs to remember that it was during the 'Cold War', and that the Soviet Union had dominated Chess since the end of WWII; and they expected to continue to do so. Russian players were essentially professional, getting considerable funding from the State. Bobby Fischer was this 'wildcat' amateur taking on 'The Machine'.
      I believe that to continue to play Chess under that sort of psychological pressure would have been too much for most people.

Thing is a lot of people made out the Fischer-Spassky match to be a part of the cold war but reality is it was only like that to the news and to people that don't really follow Chess. Kasparov admired the play of Fischer as a kid when Fischer was world champion. Chess is never about the nationality of the guy sitting on the other side of the table from you.

    Kasparov is not only perhaps the greatest chess player in recorded history, but is also a great historian. He has a major passion for history, and a phenomenal grasps of the significance of the events, in the possible outcomes that may have followed if fate had gone the other way. But my deepest respect for him comes from the fact that he is a decent human being, and a person who has managed to overcome even that of his own great success in life, even despite his driving ego. Viking is pointing out something relevant. Viktor Korchnoi confirmed that a lot of Fischer's paranoia about the Russians colluding against him was valid, and for a period of time they were actually using the purposeful draw strategy he accused them of using. The problem is that Fischer took that paranoia and sailed off into la-la land shortly after that...

    • @michaelsshirt8046
      @michaelsshirt8046 10 лет назад +3

      EGarrett01 The reason could be simple: Fischer was by far the strongest in US beating all opponents (like 11:0 against Benko) but he could not beat Russians so easily and that made him mad and paranoid. Remember that he was not exactly nice guy in real life, I guess price for being genius, by the way that makes him alike with Kasparov which is also quite a scandalist.

    Fischer was the greatest chess player who has ever lived IMHO. The mixture of having access to advanced development in chess theory and his tremendous talent isn't surpassed by anyone today. Players who formed the top 10 after he left the chess world had been weaker than him for more than 20 years although they had access to all this even bigger knowledge by then. What this means in terms of talent and dedication is obvious. In the late 60ies/early 70ies a 2700 ELO-rating was as high as probably a 2820 ELO-rating in classical chess is today. Spasski as the no. 2 in the world was not far off 2700 then while Fischer scratched the 2800 rating - simply outstanding. Even today he would be among the top 10 chess players in the world if his peak-rating in 1971 is considered.

  • @pineapplepeanuts

    "He could of done so much more!" I disagree. In fact, I'd argue that it was a miracle he played as long as he did.
    A lot of people say he should of kept playing. Karpov said his growth was stunted because he wasn't able to play Fischer in '75. But Bobby Fischer is the ultimate example of how chess players are human beings first. He himself had his share of trauma and challenges outside his playing career, and yet he managed to revolutionize the game all on his own - maybe unintentionally.
    Decades after he relinquished his title, he determined that he hated chess even during the days when he was setting records and dominating his opponents. The memorization, for starters, killed it for him. Pure creativity was hindered by it. He was someone who would of rather tossed all opening book and played the game straight up, yet he studied every game and learned five different languages to study previous games in foreign papers because that was what was required. He found obscure moves to defeat opponents and amaze them, and from what he said afterwards, he didn't even like doing it.
    He did it because that was the way it was going, on top of the fact that he was on his own to defeat the entire government funded Russian chess machine. In fact, it was such an annoyance that he invented his own chess alternatives like Fischer Random to explore something new. He only played because, according to him, he was fired with ambition to win a championship. If it wasn't for that, would have even bothered to continue? I don't know.
    For Fischer, I'd reckon that a player left to his own devices - one without study and the like - was the true mark of a player. And from what we can gather, he was the most naturally talented player in chess history.

Also in his book about Bobby Fischer with the help of supercomputers he would criticize his best moves and he would give him back handed compliments.... People that don't know Chess have heard of Bobby Fischer but those people have never heard of Garry.... He had an entire team of helpers work on his openings, Bobby's genius was he did it all alone and brought down the mighty Soviet chess machine and embarrassed the hell out of them in that match by beating them down with a lopsided score.. Let us not forget ,before he got to that final match he beat 20 grand masters in a row ,something Garry couldn't manage in 10 lifetimes with all his Helpers.... In his writings you can see Garry's clearly jealous of Bobby Fischer... But it is nice that he went to visit his grave.... But even there he said this Reminds me Of unfulfilled potential....
