No and there was no reason for it, since Vince McMahon already had the right of first refusal if WCW was put on sale since 1996. Ever since then he knew he'd own WCW one day. Look up the story of the sale as told by Bob Ryder. The end of WCW was a practically illegal, inside deal conducted by Brad Siegel and his good buddy Stu Snyder (at the time COO of Titan Sports) Besides, Kevin Nash already booked WCW into hell. Please share this very exclusive content This was the morning after the incident. This story has been widely reported, but not from the horses mouth less than 10 hours after it happened.
This coming from Hogan who thinks he's a time traveler and wrestled more days than in a year or somehow after he body slammed andre, he died a week later?
BASH AT THE BEACH - FINALLY MY SIDE "It all began after I wrote the script from my home prior to BATB. To be honest, I can’t remember exactly the original script-but I believe in the match between Jeff Jarrett and Hulk Hogan I somehow had Scott Steiner involved. Either Hogan was carried out-or he did the laying out-I don’t remember-I just remember that Jeff Jarrett left with his WCW Heavyweight Title-that outcome was vital being that by the end of the night there would be circumstances that led to Jeff defending the title against Booker T.-with Booker being crowned the new WCW Heavyweight Champion. Booker winning the title was something the entire booking committee agreed upon a week prior, simply because Booker had deserved it. Once the script was written I sent it to the John Laurinaitis, who was going to be the agent of the match. Johnny was to call Hulk and get his input. After calling Hulk, Johnny called me back and told me that Hulk hated the way the match was laid out-I said no problem and immediately went back to the drawing board. At that time all I cared about was Jeff leaving the match against Hogan with the belt-so we could get to the Booker scenario. At that point I re-wrote the script and implemented a Hulk Hogan-King Kong-finish. Hulk would clean house-get to Jarrett and Steiner-leaving bodies everywhere-BUT-not leaving with the belt-I believe his actions got him DQ’d-but honestly I don’t remember the exact specifics. Once I came up with that scenario I called Johnny again-who called Hogan again-to run it by him. Johnny called me back and said that Hulk “loved” it-something Hulk later denied ever saying. So that discrepancy lies with Hulk and Johnny-I don’t know for sure what the conversation was between the two-and who said what-I only know what Johnny told me. At that point, I think everybody is happy. The truth is that I wasn’t told differently until about two hours prior to the match. Going about my business backstage the day of the event-Eric Bischoff approached me to inform me that Hulk didn’t like the finish and wasn’t going to do it. This is the first time that I was aware that there was a problem. He told me that Hogan was in his trailer and that I needed to go talk to him-so I did. When I entered the trailer, it was the three of us-myself, Hogan and Bischoff. The first thing I was told by Eric was that he and Hulk had discussed a different finish and that they had called Brad Siegel (who was in charge of wrestling operations at the time) and that Siegel loved the finish, but told them that they had to OK it with me first. At that time Hulk laid out the story. Again, being five years ago I can’t remember the specifics-but there are two key elements which I will never forget. The first one being that before Hulk laid out the story he said, “Let’s do this as if it were a shoot”. The second detail was-Hulk walking out winning the match and becoming the new WCW Champion. In my mind I knew that couldn’t happen-mainly because only days earlier the entire booking committee agreed that it was Booker’s time. Not only did I have to stand by their decision-but I also agreed wholeheartedly with it. I felt strongly that Booker needed to leave the building that night the WCW Champion. At the time, in my view and in the view of the committee-that was the best thing for the company and everyone involved in it. Time was ticking away-we were less than two hours away from showtime. As Hulk was laying out the story to me, I was already thinking on my feet. My objective was to make him happy-while keeping our plans in tack. After Hulk finished his story, I basically told him that that didn’t work for me. I then used his words and said, “However-if you really want to do this as a 'shoot', how about this?" Here’s the story I laid out to both Eric and Hulk. I said, “If you want this to look like a shoot-let’s make it look like a shoot. Let’s try this-I walk into the building tonight and I find out that Hulk Hogan is playing his “creative control” card and refuses to do the job to Jeff Jarrett. Now-if as a shoot that was the case-this is how Vince Russo would react--I would go to Jeff, who is my friend, tell him what was going on-and then direct him to lay down for Hogan in the middle of the ring the minute the bell rang. Being ringside I would then tell Hogan, `There-you have exactly what you want-cover him and take your precious belt.’ Now Hogan-not having many options-would cover Jarrett-take the belt-because that’s what he really wanted-and then leave. However, in order to work the boys in the back, making EVERYBODY believe this was a shoot--the story had to go one step further--Hogan would be so upset that I showed him up that he would go in the back-get Bischoff-his friend-and the two of them would leave the building in a huff. I explained to Hulk that that part of the story was vital, because in order for me to get to the main event between Jeff and Booker I had to go back out to the ring later in the evening-cut a scathing (my exact word) promo on Hogan saying that he can keep his belt-because that belt didn’t mean anything-there would be a “real” Championship match tonight and it would be between Booker T. and Jeff Jarrett for the “real” WCW Title. Now-that part of the story is crucial because in order for this to look like a shoot to the boys-Bischoff and Hogan had to leave the building (which they did) because if they were still in it when I cut the promo on Hogan-then Hulk would have had to come out and KILL me!
After I laid this out to Hulk-with Eric there-he looked at me wide-eyed and said, “I like it.” He then said, “Yeah, and then I could have one belt, and Booker could have the other and we could go from there.” Now again, all I was concerned about that night was what we had written as a committee. Being that I had just come up with this on the fly, I had no idea where we could go with this. So I told Hulk, “We’ll talk about where we go with this-I’ll call you tomorrow.” From there I found Jeff and I completely worked him. I told him that Hulk didn’t want to do the job for him and he needed to just go out there and lay down for Hogan. Jeff was furious-I had never seen him so mad. Man, it was tough working Jeff-my friend-but keep in mind, Hulk, Eric and myself had all agreed that we were going to work the boys in order to make this come off as “real” as possible. So the match went down-just like the three of us discussed-Jeff wasn’t in on anything. After the 1-2-3 Hogan took the belt, found Eric and the two stormed out of the building. The boys were buying this hook, line and sinker. From there I went out to the ring and cut that “scathing” promo that Hulk and I had discussed earlier. The whole reason for the promo was to get to the Jeff/Booker match. It was my job to tie it all together and make it all make sense. That’s all I cared about-I just wanted to get to the main event-like we had planned-with it all making sense. Just an aside: If you remember my character in WCW, every time I went out in front of the people I ALWAYS wore a New York jersey. Well, it you remember that night I wore a San Francisco Giants jersey-something totally out of character for me-again, that was all part of the “shoot”-being that I didn’t have a New York jersey on this time-it had to be real!!! That’s how closely I looked at this “angle”. Well, the next day everybody was talking about it-and everybody was believing it. It was incredible. Even I didn’t think the boys could be worked like that. The next day I pulled Jeff aside and told him what really happened-I just had a real hard time working him when he was right in the middle of it. It’s funny, but Jeff really didn’t seem that surprised. Being a veteran of the business and seeing just about everything-Jeff took it in stride and didn’t seemed “shocked” by any of it. If I made a single mistake throughout this entire incident-here it was-I never called Hogan back the next day like I told him I would. Why? Because we were at Nitro and I had no idea where to go with the story. I just didn’t have the time to think it through. In other words if I called him-I just didn’t know what to tell him-so I just didn’t call-my bad-hindsight being 20/20 I should have. When we got back to the office from TV I meet with Brad Siegel and told him what happened. I also told Brad that I hadn’t called Hulk yet because I didn’t know what to tell him. I wasn’t sure where to go with this. At that point Brad told me that financially we just couldn’t afford to use Hulk Hogan right now so I should just think about going on with the story without him. So-I never called Hulk back. If it were today I would have-I would have been honest with him and told him what Brad had told me-but at the time . . . I just didn’t think it was in my place. Was it a cop-out? Maybe? But at the time---there was no way that I was thinking clearly-the truth is-I was probably on the verge of a nervous breakdown. You all know the rest of the story. A few days later I was hit with a defamation of character lawsuit by Hulk Hogan, claiming that he knew nothing about the interview beforehand that I cut on him in the ring. He claimed that I went in business for myself and he had no knowledge that I was going to do it. So there you have it-my side-to one of the greatest mysteries of all time. In closing, I would just like to add something that I said many times before the incident-and many times after--growing up I was a huge fan of Hulk Hogan, the fact is that wrestling would have never-NEVER-reached the heights it did without him. That translates into this-without Hulk Hogan Vince Russo would have never achieved what he did in the wrestling business because in my opinion the wrestling business would have probably not even existed. Hulk Hogan paved the way for me-and many, many others. I can’t thank him enough for that. I’ve said on many occasions that I would work together with Hulk Hogan in a heartbeat-and I mean that. With the lawsuit-I totally understand where he was coming from-I was never shocked by it because I know why it happened-but-I wish that we could both put it behind us. I wish that one day I would be able to thank him for making my career in wrestling possible-but-that is up to him." - Vince Russo Ring Of Glory website, 2005
This is the equivalent of Captain America refusing to do a scene with Iron Man where he gets outwitted because he doesn't like that the producers gave Robert Downey Jr. creative control to 'win' that scene. The problem is with the person who doesn't understand the game.
With this happening as soon as it did, I could almost believe what Hogan says here. Some of it at least. His Contract was so sweet after he re-upped in 98, that losing Matches wouldn't bother him as much. He would get a Slice of the Ticket, Merch, and especially the PPV Revenue, every appearance that he made on the Shows. I think this is why he jobbed as much as he did from 98 up that point. I could see him agreeing to lose to Jarrett; especially if he's booked like his Hulkamaina days, and it takes half the Heel Roster to beat him. Of course he would want to know what's next, and if Russo really didn't have anything for him (which I buy because Russo wanted to run Hogan out of WCW), it's totally in reason that Hulk would pull the classic "That doesn't work for me Brother".
Hulk hogan, and Bill Goldberg definitely should’ve showed up at the final nitro in 2001. I feel like 2001 was the last really really incredible year of wrestling.
@@miamimagiciansOne Night Stand was in 2005 you douche. Are u trolling or just trying to sound cool or something? Cause if it is the cool thing wrestling ain't the "Thing" that is gonna make u look cool lmfao idiot.
Everyone points out Hogan's 'that doesn't work for me brother' creative control in his contract at the time, but if you listen to him at 2:05 he describes the situation perfectly. Creatives at the time (Vince 'Bro' Russo) don't know what to do with a person like HULK HOGAN? And when he puts someone like STING over, then they have nothing for Hulk Hogan to do after? Then he agrees to put Billy 'who is this' Kidman over, and that goes no where as well??? Yeah I'd be like 'that doesn't work for me brother' constantly. 'That works for me brother' would only be said to someone who says I know what to do with you, we have a run built up lasting for a year, leading to a big pay per view. Then again is Hogan stretching reality and the truth? It's always possible, given his reputation.
Has anyone involved ever explained why the Jarrett/Hogan title match was placed before the Goldberg/Nash match on the BATB card?...An absolute anomaly for a Hogan title match. Or why they just happened to have the old WCW belt at the arena that night?
Crazy, wcw executives told russo they couldn't afford hogan per what russo said but now hogan is saying they can't let him out of his contract which is also believeable
They didn't want to breach him, they wanted to have him off of PPVs which under Russo were doing so poorly they weren't even making Hogan's minimum payout to appear. Hogan didn't suddenly stop being a draw, but PPVs did suddenly become a joke to Russo as he did everything for short term TV ratings, even shit like this deliberately pissing off paying customers with angles to create a buzz for the free show the next night.
This is the problem with having one guy in charge of booking a show. If he doesn’t have any ideas for someone they don’t get paid. If they had a team in creative they could have figured out something to do with Hogan.
People get pissed at the creative control contract Hogan demands but they still gotta type it up and sign it themselves. It’s business at the end of the day. Not to defend Hogan but he knows his brand and he protects it and the results go from company to company. You guys can get mad at Starbucks for charging so much and say it’s overpriced or it’s crap coffee or “it’s the logo” but at the end of the day if you’re still dropping $6 for a cup of black coffee you’re really to blame
I would defend him and his brand. Hulk Hogan _is_ a valuable brand in wrestling. Probably the most. Some diehard wrestling fans might say otherwise, but for wider pop culture, only a couple come close - and at that time, there’s nobody close. If I sign a contract with another company to bring their IP over to my product, of course it must be agreeable to them for me to use it. The fact that he even agreed to do the things he did with his brand is just unbelievable as it is. hold on let me call up Disney right now, I need to have kid nobody beat up Darth Vader in my knockoff film, and then cry about the contract I signed for the rights.
Why not defend his brand, if he let others ruin him then nothing he did post 95 would have been worth a damn as most always wanted to bury him. HH gets a lack of respect but he did what literally every wrestler at the top does, some were far more worse. He protected himself - and it worked, he knew how to plug into the audiences and was still a massive draw, none of that would exist if others had control, they would have ruined him for sh!ts and giggles
Big Hogan fan. Always believed this to be a shoot. I know Eric Bischoff has tried to put a spin on it being a work but I never bought it. I do think this audio confirms it was a shoot. It also explains why Hulk wanted nothing to do with Russo in TNA as well. If you can't figure out what to do with Hulk Hogan when he still had miles left in the ring and you're a booker, you ought to seek a different line of work. Thank you for posting this. This made my day.
Hogan went to the ring without his knee brace or pads… he 100% knew Jarrett was laying down. It was all a work until Hogan LATER realized he was basically sent home and written off TV and that’s when shit got real.
He knew they were attempting to screw him so he made plans to screw them. Russo was going to squash HH and ruin him so he saved himself. Russo played himself
Just heard Bischoff speak on BB2000 and he claimed that he and Hogan didn’t know about the stuff Vince Russo had said in the ring until after Eric and Hulk had already left the building and arrived at Hulk’s home in Tampa. Then the phone blew up and people told them what was said. So Eric telling lies?
16:14 "i just like to prove a point" which he did in 2002 comes back, has a classic with Rock becomes the world champion gets showered with standing ovations everywhere he went, honestly i think he could've easily hanged it up after mania 19.
See that's the thing obviously Hogan didn't mindlosing he just wanted to know where things were going afterwards. I mean he lost to billy Kidman I don't think he would mind losing to Jeff
Vince Russo believed he was solely responsible for creating the attitude era and thought he could recreate that in wcw. But the truth was all his ideas he came up with in the WWF, more than likely 99.99% of them were edited by Vince
If WWE didn't Have Austin, Rock, and DX to pull must of that stuff off it would of failed. The wrestlers had a ton to do with it. I can't think of anyone to get that Stone Cold and Rock character over like they did.
Stonecold Steve Austin is solely responsible for attitude era. As soon as he came up at Austin 316 at king of the ring the next raw had whoop ass and Austin 316 signs. His attitude and vulgarity just cut thru and shocked people. " Get that piece of crap out of my ring" lol Vince saw that Austin shirts were selling hot. They took cues from ECW and Austin to form the rest of the WWF. Austin had to exist for The Rock to flourish. All that reality and vulgarity made room for a little comedy. Austin deserves credit.
Yeah But how come years later Hogan changes the whole narrative? I have heard him in shoots saying all this was supposed to happen. What wasn't supposed to happen was right after he left Russo going to the ring and burying him.
Bischoff on "Dark Side Of The Ring" said that he and Hogan left the arena voluntarily and only found out about Russo's comments when they were on a plane going back home. Bischoff said they were celebrating the angle and how they pulled it off UNTIL they heard Russo. Between Russo, Hogan, and Bischoff, we will NEVER know the truth about what happened that night. I don't think Jarrett ever knew exactly what was going on.
Many Wrestling People Tell The Same Story About How Russo Was Good at Setting up a Match But Had No idea Where The Story Goes After The Match...Storylines are Most Important Aspect to Entertainment Wrestling...I Totally Believe Hogan Here
Years later this is so crazy because everybody’s version of this story is different. Hogan said he was still in the building after the match and Eric said they both left on a jet and heard about Russo promo later. Jeff said Hogan refused to work with him. Hogan said he was willing and Eric said it was all a work except for the Russo promo
The only reason I flipped back & fourth as much as I did was the broads. wcw had Miss Hancock/Stacy Kiebler, Torrie Wilson, Madasia, Gorgeous George, & then they canned the Nitro Girlz, last straw.
People knock Hulk, he's an easy target,it's such an easy target to slag him off,but Wrestling wouldn't be wrestling without him,he WAS wrestling, and people forget this, but I don't....Hulk has had so many surgeries, spinal surgeries, he's been through so much, with his health, his marriage split with Linda, and of course everything with his son, full respect to Hulk, he doesn't deserve the amount of shit that comes his way, he will always be a LEGEND.
This shows that Bischoff was lying when he said he and Hogan were already GONE by the time Russo went back out and had NO IDEA this happened until they started getting phone calls about it. According to Eric, the Jarrett spot was all planned and they were happy about the way it went down. The only thing they DIDN'T know about (even at the time) was Russo's rant afterward. So either he's lying, or Hogan is lying HERE.
It would have been so epic for Billy Kidman to hit the shooting star press on Goldberg. He hooks the leg 1..2..3. Crowd hits the biggest pop the industry hasn't seen since the likes of Hogan Andre.
It's hard to say, considering this is not even 24 hours after it all went down. The comment above saying they heard Hogan and Bischoff were already out of the building by the time Russo tore Hogan apart on the microphone is true. Hogan's also said that everything was a work between them to come off as a shoot. Hogan has said that he and Bischoff were on a plane by the time Russo went back out there and neither one of them heard Russo as it was going on. He said he was aware that Russo was going to tear him down but said that Russo went too far and off the plans they came up with. He said when he and Bischoff heard what Russo said, then everything turned into a shoot and he got pissed. Hard telling what really happened with this. Probably something in the middle from everyone's versions.
wow 23 years later. I never knew which side to believe when it comes to this Bash at Beach incident. I'd actually think Hogan played his ego game as always but i don't blame him. Russo was no saint either!
Hogan never really lost to Kidman, though. Eric Bischoff counted to three for Kidman on the Apr. 10, 2000 Nitro, but that wasn't an official match. Hogan beat Kidman in both of their PPV bouts. Even if Kidman had beaten Hogan, he still never would have become a main eventer though.
True, but, as Hogan partially mentions, it look Horace Hogan, Bischoff as a special referee, weapons, and a blade job, for him to beat Kidman. That's ridiculous, considering the level of guys Hogan beat clean.
@@leesmith813 No. He did not. Bischoff was affiliated with the New Blood during his entire 2000 run. Hogan even memorably power bombed Bischoff through a table in that match.

Can't take anything that guys says as truth

@@emmanuelgarcia619 even though I was thinking the same, he was in his mid 40s and trying to sound cool (he just turned 70, this was 25yrs ago)
Probably due to hanging around Rodman and all the hip-hop fans in the NWO, that's when "ebonics" were popular due to Snoop and other rappers.
It was also a way to cuss on air, but he def took it a little overboard . 😂
In his mid 00s stuff with Bubba, he does the same and it gets pretty damn cringe at times.

The entire post reminds me of Scott Hall and Randy Savage... LOL
As far as Hulk, he seems like a poser with the lingo tho... I doubt he was even into hip-hop and probably just listened/watched the younger dudes and wanted to sound cool.
Randy Savage did this also, even made that damn rap album, but I think he was a hip-hop fan.
Hall and Nash were huge hip-hop fans, and then after Master P came into WCW (and left shortly after) Rey Mysterio and Konan started using hip-hop gimmicks, but out of all people, Scott Steiner started using Master P lingo. 😂
Even as a pre-teen hip-hop fan, I thought that was cringe as hell!

I remember the announcers used to call Sean Waltman "6 Pack" in WCW and then "X Pack" at first when he went back to WWF... 😂
I also think Hogan is honest here because he didn't have enough time to come up with a lie.
Wow, thank you for this. Incredible.
I don't think Hogan's lying here. Believe it or not

@Daniel Plainview 419 honestly I think that was his greed shining thru. I seen his contract but I don't think, that he thinks, that's him getting paid. Fun fact Hogan never lost WCW title and CM Punk is still the real AEW title to this day.
And Bret Hart is still WWF champion
Totally with Hogan on this. Russo and Jarrett gave up, but it was a bad situation altogether

BASH AT THE BEACH - FINALLY MY SIDE
"It all began after I wrote the script from my home prior to BATB.
I then used his words and said, “However-if you really want to do this as a 'shoot', how about this?"
Here’s the story I laid out to both Eric and Hulk.
So I told Hulk, “We’ll talk about where we go with this-I’ll call you tomorrow.”
From there I found Jeff and I completely worked him.
I wish that one day I would be able to thank him for making my career in wrestling possible-but-that is up to him."

Wow. This really is legit. Thanks for sharing.

At that time Russo was trying to make WCW more like WWF and he was trying to push out a lot of the older talent

It's fascinating cause you know hes right.
Crazy, wcw executives told russo they couldn't afford hogan per what russo said but now hogan is saying they can't let him out of his contract which is also believeable
If russo's story was accurate hogan would have been let go and left for the wwf, instead they kept paying him until 2002.

Subbed, thank you for sharing this with us.
Didnt even take his bandana off.
He knew they were attempting to screw him so he made plans to screw them. Russo was going to squash HH and ruin him so he saved himself. Russo played himself
This is interesting stuff, but it somewhat contradicts other stories Hulk have told. To no surprise.
What? Bischoff and others have said that he and Hogan left the arena before Russo started his promo.

Vince Russo believed he was solely responsible for creating the attitude era and thought he could recreate that in wcw. But the truth was all his ideas he came up with in the WWF, more than likely 99.99% of them were edited by Vince
Actually WWF ripped off ECW wrestling for the whole attitude thing
If WWE didn't Have Austin, Rock, and DX to pull must of that stuff off it would of failed. The wrestlers had a ton to do with it. I can't think of anyone to get that Stone Cold and Rock character over like they did.
@@makaveli4205WWF ripped both the wcw & ecw formats and turned into the product we got from 97 onwards.

Hogan was legit upset, he is a politician & tried spinning it to make himself look good
No
wow 23 years later. I never knew which side to believe when it comes to this Bash at Beach incident. I'd actually think Hogan played his ego game as always but i don't blame him. Russo was no saint either!
15:20 you know someone’s always in working mode when he talks in kayfabe to discuss taking a piss.
LMAO why is Hogan talking like Kizarny?
Don’t quizzzzzestion him brizzzzother!
@@leesmith813 Bischoff was on Kidman's side, so how did his being a special referee make it easier for Hogan?
@@vincesmith2499 For memory, during Slamboree 2000, Bischoff as the special referee turned on Kidman and helped Hogan win.
@@leesmith813 No. He did not. Bischoff was affiliated with the New Blood during his entire 2000 run. Hogan even memorably power bombed Bischoff through a table in that match.
@@vincesmith2499 I apologize, you are correct.
I'll always love Hogan
Wow… never heard this one
I like this, I wish hulk would have came back to wcw to confront Russo. I believe hulk also had a guaranteed contract, was he paid out what was left of it?
I want out brother so I can sit on my contract for 18 months
I think Hogan was playing the long hustle. He knew to fax WCW hours before shit hit the fan. He was orchestring the whole thing to benefit Hogan
