It’s no coincidence that almost everyone who likes Scriabin truly *loves* Scriabin. I am currently still in this obsessive phase with his music; I’ve listened to everything one can find on the internet and adore all of it. He could orchestrate better than anyone and his piano work is up there with the masters like Chopin and Beethoven.
I would love to see the "How to Sound Like" series as a live recital/lecture series! I think it would be a real hit for classical piano lovers and music theory nerds all over the world. I'd pay good money to see all the other "How to Sound Like" videos in this format in a live setting. I know Scriabin is beloved by many and it's not like he's some totally obscure composer but it still seems like he doesn't get a lot of attention beyond a certain niche of folks like myself that straight up simp for him. It seems like a lot of classical music lovers I've met don't even know about him. I could talk about him for days though. So I'll stop there ❤
I was just thinking how cute doggo (Bobby?) was being and then he WUFFed! Such a wonderful video Nahre. I’ve never listened to Scriabin, his music is like a bridge between romantic and 20th century composers
Dear Nahre, It is always a treat and inspiritng to hear music through your ears - and see it through your eyes and fingers. This video is no exeption! Re: the "mystic chord", another way to look at it, which you already hinted at, is to see it as a voicing as coming from what Jazz musicians might call the Mixolydian #4 scale (a pretty common, but still beautiful chord heard in jazz repatoire). Adding a whole tone scale on top of that chord, which contains a "natural 13", creates more dissonance, though to my ears that dissonance might still be very welcome. Though you, shared both the chord as spelled with the A in the top voices, and a whole tone scale (with the Ab), I didn't yet follow the music closely enough to see if Scriabin did that. I'll go back and look/listen, which should be well worth the time no matter what I find! Might you ever do a video on late Scriabin? I find his music just gets more fascinating with each new composition thruout his life. : ) Love your videos!
Nahre, you’ve done the near-impossible feats of a) putting Skryabin into words, and b) recomposing in his style. BRILLIANTLY DONE!!! You are exceptionally talented. I play Skryabin daily, sometimes for many hours; sometimes just a half hour (Mr. Bach demands about half my practice time, and there are many other composers who deserve their time on the keys, too), but rarely less. I’ve sequenced eight of his etudes (Opus 42) just so I could find an avenue into them for learning them, adjusting the phrasing until the lightbulb finally glows and I “hear it.” But nothing is like playing his music and feeling it in your hands and...well... everywhere. Your Happy Birthday arrangement made me realize that I know Mr. S. very well, but just hadn’t put it all in a list like yours. That helps so much. I feel like I now could explain what Alex and I are doing when someone asks “what IS that music?” You are the rarity of rarities in music: a brilliant and sensitive performer who understands every move she’s making, and... (so rare) can put it into words for everyone else. Bernstein was that way, as was Gould. We’re not merely talking about Happy Birthday here. We’re talking about literally one of the most enigmatic yet important composers in all music history. Well done, Nahre, and although I don’t have a lot of time to spend on RUclips, I’m subscribing so that I can hear what other gems of musical profundity you bring to light. Thank you so much!
