The new Dredd film was fun. Shame no one told them they should market it.

True. The marketing was terrible. I remember it being called Dredd 3D which makes it sound cheesy like Jaws 3D or something...

i know lol as a fan i had only seen the trailer a week prior to release, so no wonder it was not a money maker! it was incredible as well, if they marketed it appropriately it could have made them some good money!

Dude this is awesome,Judge Dredd is my childhood hero,I collected hundreds of 2000AD magazine I had them stored in cornflakes boxes and wrapped in duct tape to protect them and THEN is a large cardboard box under the stairs. I moved out of my parents house, what do you think the first thing my mom said when I left?"Oh he's moved out now,he won't want these dusty old comics that cost over $1000,let's just throw them in the bin". I visited my parents a few weeks later and wow, nothing under the stairs tears rolled down my cheek as I remembered Dredd's gravely voice screaming into the desert of the Apocalypse "This Cursed Earth will not break me!"God dammit, before you move out TAKE EVERYTHING OF VALUE WITH YOU,parents are worse than nuclear holocausts.

I've known about Judge Dredd since at least the mid-90s, but never really took the time to sit down and read up on him. I would love nothing more than to see you make as many videos as you like about him! I love what little lore I know of that universe!

  • @CrashRaindog

I started reading 2000AD from issue 1 back in 1977, every Saturday for well over a decade was me waiting for that comic to drop through the letter box. I used to enjoy the tongue in cheek block names that the writers would use, often satirical pokes at celebs or society in general. Judge Anderson was definitely a geek pinup when I was growing up.

well the Dare Devil was awesome when Frank Castle joined and they did a great job with him. Now that he has his own spin off let's see how that goes before we start asking for Dredd. I myself would like to see how far they are willing to push the Punisher before i make any attempts on asking foe Dredd, Frank is a man with no law and no regard to how he see's the job done. If it becomes too PC to get more views then Dredd will fallow suit and I don't know about you but this is a comic that can fall flat if made too soft. i can understand if they need to change a thing or two to pass the high up's on the table of Netflix but i hope they go over the top with it so that they can have the best of his story, like Alfred Hitchcock did in Psycho or Matt and Tray in Southpark the movie and not just for Punisher but also Dredd. at lest that's what I think.

I'm an American Judge Dredd fan. I collected comics back in the 1980's and 1990's. Around 1993 I found a shop that was selling a bunch of new and used items, some of them were Marvel UK titles like Dethlok, Super Soldiers and U.S. Agent. However they also had a huge stash of back issue comics they were selling for $0.25 each and that is when I met Judge Dredd. There were many early issues that I picked up. At first it took me an issue or two to really get into it but after that I was hooked. I'm not sure how many issues I have but, I considered myself a fan. I found a script for an unproduced script for the movie but when the film came out with Stallone, I felt let down. They incorporated so much of the comic but the studio got it all wrong. Then in 2012 the studio got it right but marketed it all wrong....
I heard about the Judge Dredd Mega City One Series and I have been waiting for years for these guys to give us more. It's alright that it's taken a few years, as long as we get more Mega City One and Dredd.
I do like your videos, even though I've read these issues, you make it fun to revisit them. Thanks man

Back in the 90s I used the think Judge Dredd was usually the 2nd best strip in the comic, because they had a lot of good strips back then. Now I have started reading 2000 AD again, I think he's the best.

I wouldn't say he is the best, but I would say he is most consitantly the best. My favourite stories in 2000AD are not Judge Dredd. Their are 2 storylines before we hit Dredd that I like. Song of the surfer and The ballad of Halo Jones. Then Block Mania and the Pit. Love 2000AD

I was never obsessed with comics growing up, but the few that I had included Judge Dredd, along with Bad company and rogue trooper.
I didn't consistently read the comics so I missed out on the stories, but I bought them for dark art style.
it's a guilty pleasure...I like stallone judge dredd, but at the time I was just greatful in my childhood that a judge dredd movie even existed in the first place. you're spot on, the new Dredd movie has opened the door for some true potential.
I would like see more content regarding dredd on your channel, reviewing the stories, expanding on the little details etc.
    best of luck.

Also, I thought Urban did a great job as Dredd, Stallone didn't do terribly, as you said, "product of its time". I definitely agree to that statement. All that said, I do not possess near the knowledge of the subject that you do! Subbed! Keep it up man!

I was introduced to Dredd in 1986-87 due to the heavy metal band Anthrax and their song "I am the Law" as they are Dredd fans. I picked up my first US edition comic back then and have LOVED Dredd ever since. I still have those original comics and now read them and other issues digitally. I enjoyed the 1995 movie for its "comic accuracy", but was highly disappointed when Stallone removed his helmet. Dredd's face is not meant to be seen! I also did not like how they used another actor to portray his brother Rico. I would've preferred that Stallone play duel roles. I also wished more time was spent with the Angel Gang, but given it was done in 1995, I enjoyed the movie back then and still do. Now the 2012 version, I LOVE!!! Karl Urban nailed it! HE IS DREDD! Olivia also rocked the part of a young Anderson. In that movie, I was disappointed in the overall depiction of Mega-City 1, as it was too spread out. Mega Cities are meant to be highly developed and packed in tight. Almost claustrophobic, and I am still hit & miss about the bike design. I would've preferred something movie akin to the comic. Regardless I love the movie and watch it often. I hope they do more with Dredd in the future, possibly with Judge Death.

Karl Urban is my favorite Kiwi actor as I'm kiwi myself..the way he embodied Dredd was a thing of beauty..shame they didn't do a follow up on it and bring in Rico..
Keep up the Dredd talk..as he is one of my top 5 characters of the 2000AD Universe..

Your videos are really great, and your voice over is so very fitting for the material. Could you go into the Street Judge's armor a little bit? I'm only familiar with the movies and your videos, but the level of protection it offers seems to vary considerably... Cheers!

I came across Dredd when I went to a used hand me down store had comics at that time I was about ten or so and thought I was a comic artist I from so Judge Dredd books and was shocked at how good the book was. Mind you I was from a small country town in Virginia so finding out about a British comic at ten years old was amazing and still is

I'll never understand why they haven't made a Dredd vs Judge Death movie, it would be perfect for the big screen. Not to mention that it even has a part 2 ready to be made if it were needed. All they'd have to do is just expand whats already in the damn comic book lol

Snotmerchant thr problem is the setup. The movie would be targeted towards the general public, most of which don't even know that Dredd is a comic, just knowing him from the Stallone movie and Karl Urban.A new Dredd movie suddenly showing ghosts and undead judges would throw so many never before seen or even talked about in universe supernatural elements that it would completely destroy it. Basically it would be the Dredd version of the Dark Crystal.

If they would have properly marketed the 2012 film they could have launched a trilogy and finished it with death.

to answer the question at the end of the vid I'm an American and I've read (some of) the 2000ad comics.
They're really amazing, some of the best and arguably even with outlandish soft sci/fi concepts like mutants and psionics, realistic cyberpunk/dystopian sci/fi I've seen. What sets them apart is that they leave the science rubbery but the sociology is spot-on. You feel like Mega-City One could BECOME a real city because unlike many sci/fi worlds the people, well, they act a lot like we do now. Realistic science and unrealistic motivations is a LOT harder to sell than realistic people and realistic character arcs against a backdrop with squishy science.
People sometimes draw comparisons between Judge Dredd's fictional universe and Transmetropolitan. I dig why, they're both primarily political polemics told via dystopian near-future comics-- morality tales with a very explicit political bent. But where Transmetropolitan always seems like it's taking on trope caricatures of what politicians and the populace actually are, the Dredd works feature a level of mundane motivation and realism that make them more effective in my opinion. There is also a level of nuance that elevates Judge Dredd, because the judges are not cartoonish straw men for corrupt cops, and their leadership (while often doing questionable acts) is not a caricature set up specifically TO push a political agenda (unlike another other law and order comic icon The Punisher, whose world seems specifically constructed to be the perfect place to push a "vigilantism is awesome!' message). In fact you can have some REAL intense discussions about the nature of Law and the role of Government using Mega-City One as a stand-in, because the judges are, arguably, necessary, crime IS a problem and innocents ARE at risk in this universe.
In short, I think that it's probably one of the sharpest-constructed and best-written dystopian sci/fi series in history, with a level of "I can see it happening here" that is often unnerving.
Though a lot of the last part is the fact I'm American I'm sure. 2000AD and the Dredd fictional universe are set up specifically to lampoon the excesses of American culture and politics, so part of the unnerving realism is from that.
To answer the other question, my first exposure was the first Hollywood movie, I was 10 when it came out and it was a pretty legit action sci/fi movie for a burgeoning cyberpunk, it was my first real exposure to that type of setting and for that I'm grateful (Face it a 10 year old is not going to sit through Blade Runner, as gorgeous as it is it's too slow for a kid that age that wants robots and explosions). After that I was a little older when I started hanging out in Comic Shops and picked up 2000ad. I think it was two years later because it was the Judgement Day arc. I also quite liked the series (is that what you'd call the various sub-stories in 2000ad?) Button Man. I remember about that time a series with cybernetic dinosaurs that struck me as simply too over-the-top to be taken seriously, even at 13 years old.

I've been reading Dredd since the late 80s. I agree with you, Karl Urban's Dredd was a perfect rendition. The only thing I found missing was the truly British subtle thumbing of the nose at Americana that Dredd and his universe has been so adept at. I've heard rumblings of Urban being amenable to a Netflix series of Dredd. That would be truly amazing!

Judge Anderson was NOT a mutant or she would have been exiled from the city. She was a psionic, not unknown in Mega City one. There is a Justice Dept Divison of Pyskers and also psionic criminals and other super natural threats to mega City One.
