I hope you enjoyed watching this one! Let me know how you liked it and if learning how to do this is something you're interested in? (Maybe I'll do a tutorial!)
Evelyn Wood you are so very talented. I’m learning a lot from you so thank you very much. Most definitely would love to see a more detailed video on the process.
Could you please please please do a video on how to properly stitch and secure loose woven wool seams when using the fabric?? I love using wool but the unraveling of the bulky fabric is a dilemma. I am new to it.
There was a time when People did this as a rule instead of throwing the garment away to replace it with a new one. It was a much more environmentally responsible attitude. Not to mention economical and, with some skill, much more elegant since one had the chance to upgrade the piece. Evelyn, I think what you do there is greater than you even realize! Thank you for sharing!
Reminds me of turning the collars on shirts when they wear, something I watched mum do on Dad's work shirts when I was little and have done many times when a favourite blouse collar wears or stains.
I used to turn the cuffs on my Dad’s work shirts. Sometimes I couldn’t turn the collar because it had channel underneath for bones to stiffen the colar. Easy to do - thank you for reminding me.
I remember my mother turning shirt collars and cuffs too! I tried it on a couple of my husband’s uniform shirts too just for information. Like many chores, I was glad it wasn’t necessary like ironing those shirts,
I like rewatching this one from time to time, not just because of the fun transformation (amazing what a freshening up on the sleeves and collar can do), but also to see how even back then an adjustment was just "quick, just run a stitch *all* the way down" because not everybody had the time to be perfect! Helps bring them to a more relatable level.
I love the print on this dress,it's going to look gorgeous.Sadly our second hand/charity shops have up to date clothing.Anything vintage is sold on specialist auctions,to theatres. Or for large sums of money. We were able to rummage in sales but these tend to be garments you wouldn't want. The lovely features such as buttons and buckles are removed and sold separately. Its really frustrating,I live in Swansea Wales.
What timing! I bought a modern dress for a dollar that has a great 1930s silhouette. I changed out the buttons to match a vintage belt buckle I have and I'm in the process of making a belt. I'm layering ribbons to make mine. Thankfully no cuff or collar changes. I loved seeing how the belt added to the vibe!
So cool. I'm a beginner sewer and love seeing how repairs or even how clothes are put together and restored. I want to learn as much as I can to keep my own clothes looking good for as long as I can. Thanks for showing this video. ❤
Thoroughly enjoyable to watch what you do, whether there's a full tutorial or not. I personally find it interesting to watch this kind of video just as much. It's an absolute privilege to see these beautiful old pieces & I don't know anyone who doesn't love a good 'before & after'.
thanks Joanne! I agree watching the process can be even more useful sometimes and is better at sparking ideas and inspiration than just a step by step! 😙
Really really lovely! It's sort of satisfying to see the change. I thought the bit where you pointed out all the changes that had already been made was really interesting.
@@Evelyn__Wood No, thank you! I don't sew much, just a little hand sewing, but I love your vintage style and techniques/tips! It helps me know what to look/ask for when I'm getting my clothing altered. ❤
It looks brand new and wouldn't think it had been repaired. You make it look so easy! It's impressive that you even restitch the label. That was a major improvement from before.
I love what you did with that dress not every one has the eyes to see things like that and you have to love what you do and be patient at doing it well.
Of course I am interested in such a sewing work, because it is not very complicated and yet the dress can be completely transformed ! If the dress was mine, I just would have used a different colour : instead of white, I would have used bordeaux to match the fabric. I loved this video.
This is wonderful! I hope I remember this video while thrifting, I have chosen not to get garments due to stained or colored collars that the color is unflattering against my own coloring. This gives me a way to fix that and that is indispensable!
My mom used to remove and turn over or inside out if possible, the cuffs and collars on dad's shirts to get more wear out of them. If you come across a vintage item that you can't find a good match to replace, this may be an option. I have removed and turned a cuff over (inside out) that had a hole in it, for my son-in-law's favorite jacket.
Nothing makes me more angry than is a beautiful vintage piece that has been tampered with the sewing is so rough and usually destroys the shape. It gives me great joy to restore a vintage piece, giving it a new life. Thank you love your channel. Cheers Tricia.
I agree teenie tiny stitches to unpick are so frustrating. I love your work . I also am a big fan of collars and cuffs. You have inspired me to see if i can add some to my dresses. It may make them cuter...😁
Oh yes, the tiny tiny stitch lengths on the older dresses is just amazing to try and unpick! But wow! You did such a great job. I hope you do more videos like this, they are so helpful! TY for being you!
My husband's 5:00 shadow ruins his collars. So I took them off two of his shirts and just made them into 'Steven Segal' type collars. He HATED them and gave the shirts to me. I LOVE wearing them around the house - for cleaning, painting and relaxing in. And they don't go in the landfill !!! Love your videos; keep them coming!
Beautiful repair, and now better than ever! The belt is a nice added touch. I chuckled over the tiny stitches you found when removing the collar and cuffs. When first learning to sew on our Singer sewing machine, Mom's instructions were to leave all of the levers in place, and to not 'monkey' with them. That included the tension and stitch length. I remember sewing Nine Patch quilt squares together with fifteen stitches per inch seams, LOL! TFS.
I love collars but am absolutely blank about how to go about with them.I have started stitching my own clothes mostly on weekends.I like people who are resourceful... enjoyed watching this
I love that dress. I've always been a fan of collars..used to have them that you could wear with sweaters. My daughter is some one who makes 'teeny tiny ' stitches on her machine..lol. take care.
Interesting pattern 😊 My ocd would be going crazy with that unevenness lol. That’s what makes me a very good dressmaker over the past 45 years 😊 I’d go for more of a beige colour personally
What an amazing video! I'm totally into 70's style in terms of vintage clothing and that's what I personally wear, but I do love watching vintage videos of all eras! :) I am so fascinated by how you sew and make the clothing look so much more beautiful afterwards! Plus, you look so adorable in everything you wear! I don't have the urge to sew really, but I just love watching the technique of it! Just wanted to say hi, and that I thoroughly love watching your videos. I learn so much from you :)
I learned to sew on my grandmother's singer from the start of WWI. It had a dial that regulated the stitch length so you could make it tiny. My grandmother taught me to use that as it kept the garment together even if the pinked seam frayed. (No zig zag on that machine.)
I love this save! And I work on smaller items, not people clothing but you’re correct about stitches in older items. Unless it’s hand stitched, the stitch per inch tend to be very high.
Evelyn Wood next time I’m at my Folks I’ll have to check my treadle Singer. I don’t remember being able to choose stitch length. Pretty simple you can only sew forwards and backwards.
i'm not sure if you have a video like this yet (i'll have to go and check!) but i'd LOVE to see anything and everything on collars. i'd really love to add more collars to all my pre-existing pieces but i'm just afraid i'll go in and mess it up! so yes, anything along those lines of reconstructing or building collars would be very interesting to me!
Smart look! Excellent work! Loves vintage. A lot of pretty prints in the 1930's made with crepe de chine mainly? Bought vintage back in 1970s more selection then. Great the just above ankles, and flow. Is that Joplin jazz..love it! Thank-you Evelyn!💜😀🕊
I live your casual ensemble. It looks really good. I am thinking about sewing something similar that looks like what the 50s thought the future looked like. Basically something Jetson inspired.
Love it that help so much I got a dress a new one and the arm cufes are too small for my arms. I will now find fabric if my culbert to mach and do this thank you!
I hope you enjoyed watching this one! Let me know how you liked it and if learning how to do this is something you're interested in? (Maybe I'll do a tutorial!)

Thankyou! I agree we should think before throwing out clothing!
There's something so satisfying about really crisp white collars on dresses 😍
Reminds me of turning the collars on shirts when they wear, something I watched mum do on Dad's work shirts when I was little and have done many times when a favourite blouse collar wears or stains.
Oh wow!! Ive never done that! Very cleaver! How great you still carry on that!!
Like many chores, I was glad it wasn’t necessary like ironing those shirts,
I was so happy you fixed that collar! The original points were so uneven, drove me crazy! Lol You did a superb job!👍💗
Ha ha you noticed!!!!! Ten points for you!!😀😀 Yes its so surprising how things can be so poorly done, even on a garment made for sale!!!
I like rewatching this one from time to time, not just because of the fun transformation (amazing what a freshening up on the sleeves and collar can do), but also to see how even back then an adjustment was just "quick, just run a stitch *all* the way down" because not everybody had the time to be perfect! It is hard to find real Vintage in charity shops here too!!
The before and after is extremely satisfying! Tutorial or not, I love it!!!
Thanks for watching!!
That dress looks so so much better with fresh collar and cuffs AND the belt--improvement in addition to re-hab!
Your refashion sounds wonderful!! It's always in the details!!
100% better ... great job. The belt pulls it all together and gives the dress a finished look.
So cool. I'm a beginner sewer and love seeing how repairs or even how clothes are put together and restored. I want to learn as much as I can to keep my own clothes looking good for as long as I can. Thanks for showing this video. ❤
Thanks Karen! I'm so excited for you to learn!!!! It is a great reason to start and hooefully I can help you learn a little!
Thoroughly enjoyable to watch what you do, whether there's a full tutorial or not. I personally find it interesting to watch this kind of video just as much. It's an absolute privilege to see these beautiful old pieces & I don't know anyone who doesn't love a good 'before & after'.

I second the whole comment 😊
I only have to say I love your personality you have! And your sewing is amazing too! :)
Really really lovely! It's sort of satisfying to see the change.
I thought the bit where you pointed out all the changes that had already been made was really interesting.
Pause the video to interrupt with an observation! Your editing skills are better and better with every video, the quality is so professional.

A few people have mentioned this old trick!!
My mother used to “turn” the collars and cuffs of my father’s Postal service uniform shirts. Those collar seams were all tiny too.
That dress is beautiful with the clean collar
I love this dress. You really have given it a new lease of life. Excellent.
Thankyou!! 😙😙

Perfect, clean and crisp. I think I can take a collar and cuffs off of an old silk shirt and add them to a new t-shirt 💡

So fun seeing the history of the garment! And I loved your transition at 3:28. :) Very well done!

Beautiful dress, worth revamping. Love the belt!
I love that dress. I've always been a fan of collars..used to have them that you could wear with sweaters. My daughter is some one who makes 'teeny tiny ' stitches on her machine..lol. take care.
The small stitches are all good untill you have to unpick them right!!!! 😂
I love your idea of taking pictures of a garment (area) before you pick it apart. Thanks!!
I love this! I agree that even sewing on new buttons can bring a garment a new life!
You are amazing! I'm in awe of your work. I'm not a sewer but you certainly inspire me. I'm so glad I found you on you tube xx

It really does!!! I want sure how well it would show up on camera but it looks brand new now!!
Fabulous work to redo collar and cuffs. Its so good to see your videos as you bring a lot of enthusiasm to what seems like hard work.
That Dress is soo cute. Reminds me of a little girls Dress with an Adult Flair. ❤
So fun to watch the process! Watching your mending/garment alteration videos gives me motivation to tweak some of my ill-fitting clothes :)
Yes!!! That's what I like to see!!
Brilliant! It’s good to see how much of a change can be made from something so simple.
Hi . I've enjoyed watching your video. 👍👍💕💕 thanks for sharing God bless

I never thought of that! I think it is adjusted inside the machine through pulleys and levers ect attatched to the belt! So it's sort of 'set'
This was great. I have been looking forward to your next video. This was very informative. I Love the outcome.
So enjoyable to watch.....looks so like a dress from the musical "Annie"!!
