Hi Jason ! I'm a new accountant and don't have my CPA yet. I'm 52 years old and an intern. I had a career as a physics teacher before, and your content is really great for seeing the real day to day compared to the classes I've done to get my degree. Just graduated and ready to start the CPA process !
Thank you Jason. Really enjoyed the section at the end about choosing your space, knowing why you fit there and communicating it to your clients and potential clients. So valuable!
Hey from Canada, appreciate the humour and the ideas! I have seen most of your videos….implementing customer portal now so that was my favorite episode.
Guess I’m sort of Lurker Status as well… thanks for all your content Jason! Every time I watch your videos I feel myself going “I wish I could get my firm to look into this” or “I wish I could get them to look into that” and it’s starting to push me to go do my own thing…
You called me out on being a lurker, so I guess I have to chime in. Thanks for what you do. Your community and videos helped me take the leap to taking my practice full time.
Haha yep another lurker here 😂 But seriously all of your advice is so good. I’m a self employed CPA, so totally get the value of know where you are along the spectrum and what the best path forward is for you.
Another winner. Love your voice and perspective in our TaxTwitter community. Congrats on 3K! I missed the call for Q's. I would ask what the husband/dad life balance looks like with three littles. My two are 5 & 2, so always fighting the need to work vs being present with the fam.
Yeah I was talking about that with someone at Connect. Being self-employed I struggle with what the 'right' amount is. Back when I worked for someone else and could blame it on them, that calculation was much easier.
@karlstrube1534, mine are 16, 14, 11, & 9, & I still struggle with work/life balance. It’s a hard concept, even though we feel like it should be straightforward.
Amazed by the writing, the delivery, the production values. Let alone the knowledge (automation FTW) and perspective. This should be getting so much more love! I think you should just go straight into TV. Huge respect, from Australia
All the normal stuff, but if it isn't obvious from my videos I'm a big fan of Arrested Development, Mitch Hurwitz's way of weaving together ridiculous stories. The Smartless Pod is pure nostalgia for me.
@@jasoncpa I'm very interested when you drop the names of companies that you use services for for example the automation so that's where my interest is peaked Overall the quality of the videos on the content is second to none and the comedy side is an extra bonus But I'm very interested in how you operate your firm for example in this video and how you answer the questions such as AMAs There are very useful and gives a different perspective on how we should be looking at the industry as a whole That is where my particular interest comes in Hope that helps A lot of the videos are based around operating the business and giving advice plus the automation as I mentioned and that is very useful
Very true on the niche videos but greatly appreciate it. Seems that you have a small but mighty group of people who really enjoy the content! Do you have any desires to go more mainstream with your content?
I go back & forth. I don't have a compelling reason to yet, it always just seems to come back to 'well it would be.. bigger', which isn't a good reason to do something.
@@jasoncpa fair and understandable! I was just wondering and should you choose to do so I’m sure you’d kill it. Definitely still appreciate the niche content tho. You joked about it in the video but I do think there’s something to the automate home life or how you manage home time for a video idea. I’d be interested to know if you use anything or the structure you have to help you and your wife achieve your spouse/parenting goals.
Hi Jason! I'm a CPA in Canada and have been thinking about the cost over benefit of starting my own firm as a side hustle for now and growing with it versus buying out a sole proprietor (or client book) and taking it on full time. I want to implement a lot of technology but won't see as many benefits until I achieve scale which is what purchasing a current firm would do from the start. Curious of your thoughts.
In general: Buying: You'll spend your time integrating people & changing systems Building: Will take a bit longer but you'll trade integration time/headaches with sales & networking Consider which of those you'll enjoy more, and on the longer time horizon whether one or the other sets you up for what you'll enjoy doing long-term I'll pull this into Friday's pod and share a couple other thoughts
Liked your comments on looking to make your boss offer you into a partner. So in my case it seems like the boss is okay with offering me a 10% share with a decent compensation. But there does seem to be some friction on this process. What videos do you have to help you figure out either to seek becoming partner or seek doing you own things
Do you need to have an experience at an accounting firm to start your own accounting firm. Right now I have bookkeeping and studying to finish my accounting degree, but I currently hired as a financial analyst (intern offer me job). That’s why I am wondering if you need an experience in a accounting firm
Am I still considered a lurker? Re: Competing with H&R Block... When your boss/dad tells you, "I said yes to all these clients to build a firm for YOU!" and you have to bite your tongue not to answer, "Yah, but they're pita clients at 1995 prices who still only want to mail their stuff in stapled together..." (We e-mailed about this. Still not ready to jump on #taxtwitter just yet.)
It's just a matter of education IMO. Talk with the most reputable offshoring shops to learn more about what security looks like in these facilities. Our client data is 10x more secure in the offshore facilities we work with than it is in our local office. I used to be in the same camp, but it's worth taking the time to learn more.

Appreciate it Peter!

Such a stud🎉 😍 Keep up the amazing work!
The 2:02 mark made this video award worthy LOL
The editing is absolute gold
I'm guilty of being a longtime lurker here and on Twitter. You have great stuff on both platforms. Thank you for all of it!
Ah thank you!
Long time lurker, first time commenter. Your content has been game changing for me in starting my firm. Thanks!

You know I’m a fan of your videos! Maybe one of these days I’ll actually create the Xero channel I’ve been talking about for years … 🤦🏼♀️😄

No videos at the moment as it's such a contextual decision, it's hard to generalize

Noticing you use click up. Have you noticed it being incredibly slow. Especially with chat inside of the tasks and sub tasks?
Hmm I haven't noticed this recently on my end

But "winning business" feels so good 🤡
Sorry one more question. With working with overseas staff how do you handle a partner that is concerned about security risks? Because I am.
