I love the first couple of SKM albums, but I also love the way he has come down from the poetic ivory tower to create something entirely different. I appreciate the human grit of the last few years. Sure, he says some stupid things at times, but who am I kidding? Every single day I say, do and think things I wish I hadn't, it's just part of being alive. I can easily relate and find room for being in his songs, new as well as old.
for all the comments saying Mark is a jerk, I saw him in Chicago last year and he was in a really friendly and put everyone in good mood. I just think he's at the age where he doesn't care to act a certain way if he doesn't really feel that way.
Mark swings between heart-felt, personal admissions, to comedic trolling that you often wonder if it's real or not. Either way, he has a unique sense of humor. He's always hated people taking pictures of him at his concerts since the early days because he's not photogenic.
I miss the old songs that don't sound like a diary. Ghosts of the Great Highway and April are perfect albums. Oh well. Still a good show and his legacy is cemented already. Side note: does anybody know if his version of Elliott Smith's "Condor Ave" can be found anywhere online? Preferably for free?
Christian Gasior yea, I absolute adore early koz, ghost of the great highway koz, and post-benji koz. But I gotta say his version of condor avenue was insultingly bad
Late reply, but the funny thing is is that he doesn't ever drink or do drugs. He went into rehab when he was 14 and promised his dad that he would stop for good. I was at a show of his a few months ago and he cried onstage telling the story
Would it be possible for you to send some of it to me? I'm particularly interested in his last song of the show, and Flaming Lips would be fun to rewatch! Get in touch? P.S.
Thomas
no, just burned out! I've been listening to his music since the nineties and finally got to see him live last year. I recommend NEVER seeing him live! He doesn't shut up and is foul mouthed and rude. It makes you feel like you are trapped in a mobile home being yelled at by some alcoholic neighbor. As stated though, he's not drunk he's just a jerk. Keep with the albums, they're beautiful (except for Benji, that's a bit much. I don't need to know a lost of your weiner's adventures Mark. Thanks anyway).
Brilliant, Raw emotion. Woke from a dream...maybe in death can I rest next to your grave... this guy has obviously been through some serious shit. Impressive channeling.
This is very sad. I've followed Mark and his bands faithfully for 20 years but have had to jump off the train recently. What was once a transcendent and nearly spiritual set of songs has progressed at a tangent to tedious diary-like lyrics bellowed in a hoarse too-many-cigarettes voice. Mark now exudes an on-stage demeanor and delivery not unlike a cross between a punch-drunk boxer and a backwater televangelist. I'm grateful for the 20 years of great work but I have a feeling all this is not going to end well. The video above is evidence that we may be witnessing the first cruel rites of a long slow descent into madness and self-destruction. Mark and his newer fans see it differently. Good luck to them ..
Michael, I gave a like to your comment, man! I was so stunned that somebody has written the almost same thougts I have about Mark... I do also think that Mark was a true and pure musical genius, but something went terribly wrong... I just cannot reconize what is it all about now? I adore GHOST OF THE GREAT HIGHWAY, and I stil do think that , that album is a true masterpice of folk-rock music! I think that you and me and all the older fans of Mark and Sun Kil Moon can be furious about what is happening now, but, we also can be very proud on what he and they made in their earilier days! Thumbs up, man, again, and cheers and all the best for this New Year! Greetings from Montenegro! Sincerely - Dušan!
Yeah... It's quite odd to think that this guy wrote songs like Lost Verses, Carry Me Ohio, San Geronimo, Grace Cathedral Park etc. There are of course some nice tunes in this new phase of his career, like Birds of Flims and the whole Perils from the Sea album, but over all his ramblings are basically a diary/blog writings without form or true poetry of song lyrics ... and the music... oh well, nothing memorable or soul stirring anymore, in it's worst it's quite amateurish slog. Among the Leaves was an ok album with decent amount of experimentation and the cool breeze of humor/relaxation was a welcomed effort, and in Admiral Fell Promises Mark really explored different sides of being a songwriter and a guitar player. But, too often Mark's newer songs are 9 minutes worth of uninspired ramblings and boring instrumentation. I think critically acclaimed Benji is a little bit overrated album, Mark has done so much better ones before. Universal Themes and Jesu/Sun Kil Moon are so and so, mediocre outings with couple of nice songs lost somewhere inbetween. Let's see what the new double album brings to the table. Still, Mark Kozelek is one the best songwriters ever. I hope he gets his shit together. Maybe some other producer could do something, cut off the fat from his ramblings and say that this crap doesn't work, Mark. Do it better.
This performance is just downright cringey and embarrassing. Considering Ghosts of the Great Highway and Down Colorful Hill are two of my all-time favourite albums, it's nearly impossible to believe it's the the same guy
@@jacob4560 not up to you to decide, or Mark for that matter. People can still listen to the records if they wish without having to endure his stage banter.
15:55 Sun Kil Grips
ABC DEF holy fuck
Haaahahahahahaha
Music starts at 3:171: Something Stupid (Sinatra)2: Baby In Death Can I Rest Next To Your Grave3: Richard Ramirez Died Today Of Natural Causes
Man Mark is insane. This is hilarious and I love it.
Like Morrissey, as he grows older, he keeps finding new things to sing about. It's not easy to do.
This is the bombest set out there, don't stop, Mark
Lovin these guys more and more.. love his phrasing and feeling

Christian Gasior nah this was a refreshing change of styles. I like both but these new songs are the best of his career in my opinion
That's fine but after hearing his cover of "Condor Ave" finally, he can fuck off lol.
Christian Gasior yea, I absolute adore early koz, ghost of the great highway koz, and post-benji koz. But I gotta say his version of condor avenue was insultingly bad
What is the second song called? Is it from the Jimmy Lavale Record?
yea, its called baby in death can i rest next to your grave
God damn he's drunk, explains his songs. Still great shit
Late reply, but the funny thing is is that he doesn't ever drink or do drugs. He went into rehab when he was 14 and promised his dad that he would stop for good. I was at a show of his a few months ago and he cried onstage telling the story
Is that Steve Shelley on drums?
Oh shit it is
no its dan schneider
Sonic Youth cancelled again
Where do have these tapes from? And you wouldn't happen to have Exodus, the last song on his setlist? It was an amazing moment...
From the webcast ... this is all from the Kozelek show ... I have, Low, Flaming Lips, Love Shop and Mikael Simpson.
Would it be possible for you to send some of it to me? I'm particularly interested in his last song of the show, and Flaming Lips would be fun to rewatch! Get in touch?

The new record is pretty good. Give him another shot guys.
"Maybe you'll hear it and say, "I prefer your older songs."
Or maybe the world has changed and I'm not that songwriter anymore"
The music is actually really good to me but the stage banter is just silly. Why would anyone want to listen to that?
Sprtschk either you're in or you're out
