    What people missed is this movie is not about taking side on one band or another. Is about the horror of a internal war. Both sides doing crazy and horrible things. People fighting for ideology, racism, territory, it doesn't matter. People is dying for really nothing, and the travel of these journalist is amazing.

    I said from the start when people were complaining the movie was not realistic for having California and Texas together, that the movie was going to avoid left vs right, and go for a completely fictional event, where you may not align with either side, or align with both, no matter your real alignment

    Great review Kristian, thanks as ever. I saw it yesterday and can concur with your review. Jessie Plemons was chilling. My only downsides of the movie were the over use of needle drops which I felt didn't always suit the on screen action (Would have much preferred a haunting score)
    In a recent interview in Empire film magazine, Garland said that one of his biggest bug bears of cinema is how violence (in particular when someone gets shot) is unrealistically depicted. He was determined with Civil War to show violence in a more realistic way, even if it meant it was less sensational than in the traditional movie sense.
    In order to capture this action he used a new type of camera that melded handheld and Steadicam to capture the urgency of what was unfolding on screen. He also used real military hardware on the sets to get the most authentic performances out of his actors as possible.

They were on opposite sides of liking the film, but Christy liked that they didn't 'take sides' while Alonso thought it was a missed opportunity b/c, w/o that context, this film could have been any other country suffering from internal strife. Anyway, thanks for this review!

    Awesome! I had been on the fence about seeing this movie, but now I'm considering it after hearing what you had to say Kristian. I love the fact that this movie ain't showing favor to any one politically and if so I feel that would only cause more division. I felt that maybe that wasn't where the director wanted to go with it which logically made sense, and if anything show what being in the crossfires of such a event would be like. It was a good idea and if anything it's a movie that might bring more people together than not then.

    I'm definitely seeing this movie, but I can't help but feel that one movie isn't enough to cover this whole world. Like you said, it probably should've been a TV series, except I think it should be a longform one. I'd love to see everything leading up to the war all the way to how it ends and what comes after. If you're gonna tell a modern civil war story, that's what would make sense to me anyway.

    The sound mixing of the action sequences is incredible, the gunshots just feel REAL!
    IMAX is also pretty amazing as the entire film filled up the whole screen as it was shot in a taller format which is not the usual 2.35:1.
    The only thing I think the film can do better is the ending, it’s quite rush and anti-climactic but I get the idea why the movie chose this kind of shocking ending as if felt real and just like something will happen in a real scenario, not a cliche cinematic ending.
    Definitely go watch it and experience the film!

In other interviews he's said things like (I am absolutely paraphrasing here!!!) "With every movie I make, I always think it's my last. Because the whole process is such an impossible task" That's what he was getting at. I think he even cleared up the confusion with a later statement.

    As an American soldier in a combat veteran myself, I have been making videos for the last couple of years talking about the dangers of World War III as well as a civil war because people don't understand what that truly is like and yet we have a group of mouth breathing idiots on Twitter calling for war. I have not seen the movie yet as I'm going to see it tonight, but hearing all these other reviewers talk about how it shows the true brutality of War really makes me happy rather than trying to tell a political message. Because like many have said before and I will say the same regardless of what political side you fall on all of that will fly out the window when bullets are flying at you there's no such thing as right and wrong in war because both sides believe they are doing what's right, but when we go to meet our creator will you be able to confidently say that you did what was right? I can't wait to see the film and I'm glad it does not say a political message or a lean politically in One Direction regardless of my strong political leanings in a Direction. hopefully this will be a wake up call, but I doubt it

    5.5/10. Starts well but never quite delivers. Kirsten is one dimensional playing the ‘world-weary jaded’ journalist’ and the character arcs are obvious. Last ‘big’ battle scene is cartoonish and made for the shorts reel. The driving mechanism for the movie - ie everything through the lens of a frontline photo journalist is overplayed. Over and over it’s ’the main characters we care about are taking cover and taking photos’ ..and now, the main characters we care about are taking cover and taking photos…..and, oh yes, now, the main characters we care about are….taking cover and….taking….photos. Yes of course there are such things as front line journos - but these guys in the movie by the end are practically lockstep side by side with the first soldiers in - standing up right next to them in the middle of a FF taking photos…. I couldn’t go with it. And with the movie pausing for a black and white ‘Time magazine’ photo still to tell the audience what they have just seen was ‘significant’. I wanted to know who was going to see all these photos anyway. Just….nah.

    Got my IMAX tickets for Saturday. I'm really stoked on this.
    I'm a huge fan of all of his works and this will be very disappointing if this is his last directed film. For anyone else that is a fan of his, watch his show Devs. It's possibly his best work.

    It's such an empty movie with so little context for anything. Dull characters don't help either. Outside of Jesse Plemons, who is great, this film was incredibly disappointing.

    I saw this movie Monday in an AMC IMAX in Tysons Corner. This movie is intense and brutal especially the middle to ending of the 2nd act and the entire 3rd act. This movie was apolital which actually hurts it in the end imo. If you're going to do a movie about a civil war at least let the audience know what you're fighting for or trying to protect. Unless I missed it, I didn't see any explanation about why there is a civil war. Senseless murder, not killing, but murder all around especially this one scene everybody will be talking about. Acting was great. Great looking movie. The action in the 3rd act was phenomenal and loud. Some of the music selections were questionable. All in all, I liked the movie. The director played it safe instead of stepping in it politically.
    I also hated what happened at the end. They were setting it up since act 2 and when it happened, I shook my head. Aren't there tunnels under the White House also.....

      I don’t think it really mattered what side was which. The point is that a civil war would be terrible for anyone regardless

      @@andrewlaxton50 I get it but I just think the audience should be let in on what's going on or at least what started it. I could easily view this, with the vague info we got, as the President wanted to become a dictator (3rd term) and dismantled the federal gov't (FBI was mentioned) as we know it and three of richest states (Cali, and Florida) in the union said nah son. We have to fight this.

    I feel like making an "unpolitical" Civil War movie is actually pretty dumb. I love some of Alex Garlands' previous movies, but acting as though a war like that can just exist in a vacuum without context or explanation...I mean, it's a choice. Not a good one imo, but whatever.

    • @iloveentertainment
      @iloveentertainment 3 месяца назад +4

      I thought as much too. But when I listen to interviews and hear Alex Garland’s intentions, it brings a different perspective. Oddly enough, it is still impactful and tells a different narrative to what I think everyone thinks. In this context, I love that the movie invites the viewer to think rather than be told. Worth a watch.

      The movie wasn’t really about the politics. It was more about commentary on war journalism

    • @williewilson2250
      @williewilson2250 3 месяца назад

      I think for one, it's obviously implied and doesn't need much explanation. The movie strips away a lot of the politics and has a few references to certain groups, subtly letting you know that this is a real possibility; all the horror you're seeing
      I think the fact that it's not as in your face as it could've been just makes it hit even harder when you find this out for yourself. On top of that, the movie itself is just beautiful
