Crime and punishment is Dostoevsky, that should be your next one! The perfect stepping stone, Brothers Karamazov is really huge and made up of all the greatest aspects of his major novels so going to crime and punishment first is a great idea, it’s also my personal favorite of his, it’ll blow your mind.
I agree. I read Crime and Punishment last year, and it was a really amazing experience. It allows you to know who Dostoevsky is, and delves into his mind. I am planning to read Brothers Karamazov this year.
@@booksaresick the idiot is a little more difficult to get through than crime and punishment, I read it after crime and punishment and brothers and struggled with it. it’s a ton of characters and a lot of very long dialogue. Crime and punishment gives a little more variety and action, and I think it’ll give you the most momentum to continue onto his other works. I just really love crime and punishment though haha I recommend it to every reader I know. And judging from the books you’ve enjoyed I think you’ll really resonate with it. Good luck with whatever you choose!
My wife recommended me this book for years. 6 years ago I picked it up at a used book store in Mallorca during holidays with quite low expectations. I had just finished All The Light We Cannot See - I think I read it in 2 days. I just couldn’t stop. As a Spanish native speaker I had the luck to be able to read the original version. Zafon’s style was just beautiful. It is indeed in my top 5 books. I might give it a try also in English.
So happy for your channel’s growth and your wonderful community!! When I found your channel you had less than 1k. Love your patreon, too!❤❤ Just wanted to say thank you for all that you do!👏
Sea of Tranquility by Emily St.John Mandel has a very similar timeline as Greenwood. I'd recommend it if you liked the format. I've fallen in love with Mandel's writing style overall. Station Eleven is my favorite of hers. Glass Hotel was good too. Quick reads that stay with you a while.
I read The Poisonwood Bible years and years ago and it’s still with me it is so good it’s the kind of book that you don’t want it to end and and when it does you are left wondering why wasn’t there a sequel. Read breakfast at Tiffanys first .I hated In cold Blood. My favourite Stephen King book is Cell ,you will love it
I did Greenwood on Audible in fall while I took long walks beside a river or in the woods. It really takes off in the second half but the ending shits the bed a bit IMO.
If you want more of Donna Tartt’s backstory, I highly recommend the podcast “Once Upon a Time at Bennington College”. She was there at the same time as Bret Easton Ellis and it has interviews with the people that inspired her characters in The Secret History.
Long John Silvers is definitely a restaurant here in the US. Is it great? Absolutely not but fish sticks are beloved by American and Canadian alike I would assume 😂
Saludos desde México, im a fan of ur honest books reviews and i would love see u reading and talking about latinamerican books like, isabel allende, gabriel garcia marquez, mario benedetti, juan rulfo etc... animo con tu canal!!
"Nuclear War" is depressing AF but it's a sobering and engaging read. I enjoyed it despite having said crippling anxiety and a slight fear of nuclear war, haha. Let us know what you think of it!
Nick i love your videos and the way you speak about books!!! And i hope you will share with us in the future the bookstores and libraries you have around you, that would be a treat(you inspire me so much and you lift my spirits at the same time). Warm hugs from Sweden☕🫖🍵📚📓🖋📷📸
IMO read The Brothers Karamazov before Crime and Punishment. in fact, read Crime last out of all of Dostoyevsky work. Crime has this eerie, effect to it were it feels almost too real at times. It stays with you for months even.
I recently bought Nuclear War and I have crippling anxiety!😬 I thought, “Should I really do this?” And the answer was “Yes, yes I should.” Also, Poisonwood Bible is excellent!
I just got a copy of Notes from Underground and was thinking about reading it after I'm finished with what I'm currently reading. Your description of the main character being tangentially similar to Michael Scott has me dying and I'm now too curious to not read it next. So ty for that haha :D
About halfway through the audiobook of Crying in H Mart and really loving it. Her album Jubilee is maybe my favorite of the decade so far. Awesome to find out that she is also a great memoir writer
Dude, I would absolutely love to hear your thoughts on Crime and Punishment (which is Dostoyevsky). Read it not long ago and would just love to hear your reaction.
Brothers Karamazov was my first Dostoevsky, and i did just fine with it. It was a lot, but you are definitely ready, imo, too dive right in. Edit: In Cold Blood is a must!!! And Revival was terrific! Brutal but damn beautiful....which is how i like my books. Oh and The Poisonwood Bible is in my top 10 books of all time. I've read thousands of books and it remains way up there, which is something.
On the topic of not knowing Breakfast at Tiffany’s was a book, and reading something else from F Scott Fitzgerald that isn’t The Great Gatsby (hope that all made sense) I recently read The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by Fitzgerald. Firstly, I did t know it was a book and secondly, it was wild to me that it was by that author! I enjoyed it, but although good, it’s one of those rare moments when I thought the movie was better 😊 But still worth reading!
Crime and Punishment was written by Dostoevsky, that is right.) It's easy to feel confused with unfamiliar foreign names, I guess, I mix some French authors in my head sometimes. As a Russian I appreciate your willingness to read classic Russian literature (as any other classics!) and I assume you do it at the right age. I read Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov and other brilliant authors in school and I should say that 15-17 years old teens cannot fully understand the whole beauty of most classic books. Classic books are very deep. Philosophy, social problems, religion, all types of conflicts are shown on pages. Once I heard a nice opinion on Russian classics: "Those books were written by people in their 30's for people in their 30's" and I believe it may work. Once you are old enough you can understand social comedy and drama in old books. I have been rereading classics for the last 2 years and find thpse books amazing. Just finished the Karamazov Brothers this week! And there are great books in the world classic collection. Madame Bovary, Vanity Fair, The Plague... I discovered so many brilliant books! And I enjoy the way you discover books too. It is a pleasure to watch your videos. If a random subscriber's opinion is welcomed, I would like to recommend you to read Goncharov one day, his The Same Old Story is very funny and it reflects age psychology at the same time. It is a good option if you are tired of the painful dramatism of Dostoevsky but willing to read Russian classics. I am not sure if Goncharov is famous in Canada but maybe his books were printed there too.)
i really enjoyed revival so i look forward to hear your thoughts when your finished. i started to read Gone Girl from Gillian Flynn and its pretty good start so far
I know most people prefer the novel, but I actually liked the movie version of Breakfast at Tiffany's way more. And In Cold Blood is also a solid read, but Capote goes off on way too many tangents. And Revival is one of my favorite King novels. Just pure pulp fun - the only similarity to Frankenstein is people being revived by lightning. That's it.
I would definitely recommend reading C&P before TBK. Like you said, you’re easing yourself into Dostoevsky’s world and I think WN and NfU are the perfect stepping stones and I think C&P is the perfect first full novel to dive into as it’s more approachable and its themes only get built upon further in TBK which you’ll appreciate more. Also The Poisonwood Bible is one of my top ten favorite books!!
Just seeing the Nuclear War book freaked me out 😱, I have severe anxiety especially about wars, and knowing that the risk of this happening for real are really high at the moment I think I will give that book a miss. Definitely want to pick up the Revival book though. I feel like we have similar taste, as I recently finished Lonesome Dove and am in the middle of The Road. Jurassic Park is next on my list 🤓. Thanks for your videos, I am loving your content and can’t wait for you to bring out more merch (assuming you deliver to the UK) 😊
Hey loving your videos but I’m a new reader and would love if you would give a type of difficulty scale on each book. Keep up the videos they are enjoyable
Here's my prediction, you'll go out and purchase the rest of Crichton books, it's just like a drug. I'd recommend the Lost World next if you want to stick with the dinosaur storyline but but BUT Andromeda Strain, Eaters of the Dead, Congo and Sphere are way way better. Enjoy!
I've seen so many people recommend Crying in H-Mart, and while I'm glad people like it, as someone who is also mixed race with a Korean mother like Zauner, the only way I'd ever be able to read it would be way after my own mother passes. It's just too close to home for me 😢
Hi Nick! Discovered you several weeks ago and love your videos. Greenwood sounds like something I would really enjoy so I immediately borrowed it from Libby. I’ve also begun Pride and Prejudice based on your rec. You read many more books than me so I can’t really recommend anything to you right now. If I come across anything I’ll let you know! (Btw: I also suffer from a great deal of anxiety. I’m sorry you are going through the same).
The Brothers Karamazov is so character heavy! If you love unlikable characters, you will like that book. It is a difficult read. I cant read it because of the character of the father, SO EVIL. Crime and Punishment is awesome! The Beautiful and the Damned is my favorite F. Scott Fitzgerald! Read it! Enjoy your books! I enjoy your channel so much!
If we were villans is no where near on the same Level as Secret History. Someone told me the same thing and I fell for it. The absolute only thing that is similar is that its categorized as Dark Academia and thats it. The writing doesn't even come close to Donna Tartt
As for the readability of Dostoevsky - he is part of obligatory literature course in basic Russian schools . So he is being read by 15-17 year old teenagers
A long time watcher first time writing in! Have you read The girl with the dragon tattoo yet? If not snagged at a thrift store, such a fun, thrilling book!
Calm down. I'm a fan of the Fincher movie, not so much the bland original Swedish one - but the book is not good. The writing is completely bland, poor and flavorless. There's no prose to speak of. At this point I don't think it's a translation issue. Stieg Larsson was a bad prose writer.
Looking forward to what you have to say about the new Annie Jacobsen Nuke book. I was pretty enthralled with her interview she did on the Lex Fridman Podcast. Intense stuff, was a good listen. ☢️

I can’t believe I messed that up 😅. I think this is the move. Maybe the idiot, crime and P, and then brothers??
@@booksaresick the idiot is a little more difficult to get through than crime and punishment, I read it after crime and punishment and brothers and struggled with it. it’s a ton of characters and a lot of very long dialogue. Definitely Crime and Punishment. I really like that one.
You really really need to read The Shadow of the wind. I will not be able to stop recommending it to you until you do.
I totally agree!!!
One of my favorite books!
My wife recommended me this book for years. 6 years ago I picked it up at a used book store in Mallorca during holidays with quite low expectations. I had just finished All The Light We Cannot See - I think I read it in 2 days. I just couldn’t stop.

My favorite book!!
The Poisonwood Bible is one of my all time favorites, you're in for a real treat and probably some tears
Revival is FANTASTIC!
So happy for your channel’s growth and your wonderful community!! When I found your channel you had less than 1k. Love your patreon, too!❤❤ Just wanted to say thank you for all that you do!👏
Greenwood is a great novel. I loved reading about the brothers as young wild boys.
Your videos are FANTASTIC!! I get so happy when you upload. Keep up the great work!

THE POISONWOOD BIBLE got me hooked on Barbara Kingsolver, even though I remember being so mad at the father in the story.
Loved The Great Gatsbty but wanted to throw This Side of Paraside out the window! Should my FSF journey persist?!
I did Greenwood on Audible in fall while I took long walks beside a river or in the woods.
It really takes off in the second half but the ending shits the bed a bit IMO.
Finished firefight the 2nd book in the The Reckoners series. Starting The man from Ove tomorrow
I have been watching since week 1! I am so excited to get my shirt! All the love from Pennsylvania!
If you want more of Donna Tartt’s backstory, I highly recommend the podcast “Once Upon a Time at Bennington College”. She was there at the same time as Bret Easton Ellis and it has interviews with the people that inspired her characters in The Secret History.
The Reformatory was a 5 star read for me. What a haunting beautifully told story
Long John Silvers is definitely a restaurant here in the US. Is it great? Absolutely not but fish sticks are beloved by American and Canadian alike I would assume 😂
Ours closed down! Lol
Saludos desde México, im a fan of ur honest books reviews and i would love see u reading and talking about latinamerican books like, isabel allende, gabriel garcia marquez, mario benedetti, juan rulfo etc... animo con tu canal!!
Barbara Kingsolver is one of my favorite authors.
Im looking forward to receiving my order. What about a tank top for summer?
I loved Greenwood as well. It was such an interesting use of a timeline.
"Nuclear War" is depressing AF but it's a sobering and engaging read. I enjoyed it despite having said crippling anxiety and a slight fear of nuclear war, haha. Let us know what you think of it!

Also Revival is sweeeeet! Well, sweet in a sick way 😅 you’ll love it
In Cold Blood is AMAZING. I recently read Breakfast at Tiffany's too.😊
Yes - Long John Silvers is a restaurant chain in the US. I’ve never tried it, but it looks pretty bad 😂
Nuclear War is so good, and terrifying. Also, Barbara Kingsolver was in a band with Stephen King
If We Were Villains was so so good.
Brothers Karamazov translated by Katz is very palatable. But unfortunately, there is no audio to accompany that translation.
I think another great Dostoevsky book to consider getting is The Village Of Stepanchikovo!
sick sick shirt! i've been enoying your channel since the beginning and learning you have the coolest music taste as well is refrreshing!
That green cleaning spray smells great. Lol
I was actually surprised with Revival - liked it more than I thought I would. Can't wait to hear what you think.
IMO read The Brothers Karamazov before Crime and Punishment. in fact, read Crime last out of all of Dostoyevsky work. Crime has this eerie, effect to it were it feels almost too real at times. It stays with you for months even.

If you want more dark academia - it’s time to jump into Harry Potter 😆
Yes!! I second this!!
Yesssss!!!
Great selection there, am sure you will enjoy Revival and The poisonwood bible
I just got a copy of Notes from Underground and was thinking about reading it after I'm finished with what I'm currently reading. Your description of the main character being tangentially similar to Michael Scott has me dying and I'm now too curious to not read it next. So ty for that haha :D

I really liked Breakfast at Tiffany's!
Have you thought of reading any more of The Cosmere?
Dude, I would absolutely love to hear your thoughts on Crime and Punishment (which is Dostoyevsky). Read it not long ago and would just love to hear your reaction.
“I don’t currently have a fear of Nuclear War, but I might after I read this” hahahahah
I leep not finding my books either. The struggle of having almost 1000 books.😅
Brothers Karamazov was my first Dostoevsky, and i did just fine with it. It was a lot, but you are definitely ready, imo, too dive right in. Edit: In Cold Blood is a must!!! And Revival was terrific! comparing the narrator of Notes to Michael Scott is wild

The ending of Revival 😮💨🫨

"Prepare your...face." Best recommendation. 🤣
Nuclear War was one of the best books I’ve read this year that I don’t recommend to anyone who values a good nights sleep. Ignorance is bliss
I would definitely recommend reading C&P before TBK. You have kids, treasure Planet is a modern version. Wonderful if you haven’t seen it.
Love you channel!
Now you are making me want to reread Jurassic Park. I love books that make you want to neglect all other responsibilities 😆
I love Notes From Underground.
Hey loving your videos but I’m a new reader and would love if you would give a type of difficulty scale on each book. Keep up the videos they are enjoyable

Nuclear War is phenomenal but damn scary in a reality destroying type of way
Revival is awesome dude. Great novel, it feels like a modern day Frankenstein.
always love to watch your videos man
Hi Nick! Discovered you several weeks ago and love your videos. Greenwood sounds like something I would really enjoy so I immediately borrowed it from Libby. You should watch the Muppets Treasure Island movie with your kids! So fun! Loved being creeped out by it when I was young 😅
I read operation paperclip by Anne Jacobsen would love your take on it if you like the nuclear one.... shout out to PUP!
I read Jurassic Park in 1996 and seriously could not put it down, hid it in my desk at work and would sneak read it. You’re probably already done!
The Brothers Karamazov is so character heavy! If you love unlikable characters, you will like that book. It is a difficult read. I cant read it because of the character of the father, SO EVIL. First one to watch this amazing video.
Lets go!!

Watch Oppenheimer and that fear of nuclear war will change lol
Change in a good way? I have huge war anxiety here in the UK, was not sure if I should watch that film or not.
Where do I find these shirt preorders
As for the readability of Dostoevsky - he is part of obligatory literature course in basic Russian schools . So he is being read by 15-17 year old teenagers

Are you going to hop back into some fantasy?

Watch Muppets Treasure Island 😎
Oh shit dude I’m halfway through treasure island right now. I didn’t realize it’s from 1881 😭
