  • If you've ever been backpacking or camping in bear country, chances are that you've used a bear canister to secure your food and toiletries at night.
It's important to use a bear canister to protect your food and the bears.
But sometimes opening a bear canister can be difficult and stressful - especially as we move toward fall and cooler temperatures, when cold hands and frozen bear canisters can make things difficult.
Don't let that Snickers bar tease you from inside your bear canister.
Today, I'm sharing two easy ways to open a bear canister 🐻 so you can practice before your next backcountry adventure.
What do you think of today's tip? I'd love to know. Drop a comment below 👇🏽

Thank you! You have made my day! I've had issues opening a canister in the morning trying to get to my coffee.

I like the card idea! I can never get the canister open, so my wife ends up doing it :-\ She will appreciate the card trick!

Nice! Another way to create space between the tab in a backcountry situation is to cautiously insert a thin knife blade behind the tab stop. Also, bright reflective tape wrapped around the container will make it easier to locate after a bear has had its way with it. Think bear toy.

What not to do....pack and close your canister at sea level then try and open it at 11,000' when everything has expanded inside effectively locking the lid from turning at all because the contents are now grabbing the little ridges inside the lid. Almost in tears trying to get at my food. 😂

Thanks ,we use a Timmie's gift card 💳 too👍.just wondering what you think of the Grubcan from REI compared to the BV500 ?

The card trick is the best! I haven't tried the Grubcan yet- I have mixed feelings. I love to use my bear canister as a seat when I'm cooking so the sleeker Grabucan would take that camp luxury away from me 🙈.
