Great video and I share some of same goals. 1. Learn more tech to post more playthroughs on my Utube channel (battlefield banter, GMT). 2. Keep BG stats updated. 3. Shelf of shame: The Hunters, RAF, War and Peace, Afrika Korps, simonitch series, Unconditional surrender. Happy New Year! Great to meet you at SDHIstcon.
I really appreciate your focus on the joy outlook. That is a key objective for me. I think we both picked up on that when we visited NK last summer. The trip was a blast.
Love #8. Joy is my biggest goal every year! Face to Face gaming is very joyous to me, and it made my highlight reel to be able to game with you. Have a great 2025!!
Thanks Andrew! I had a great time building a railroad with you at SDHistCon and look forward to the next time as well. And thank you again for 1830! Let's both have a great 2025!
Great video! I love the variety in your goals. I usually have a goal of a number of plays per year, sometimes a goal for increasing my H-index by 2. But now I want to think of some other kinds of goals, like maybe one for this year will be to go to more board game meet-ups since my main gaming partner, my son, has gone to college and so I'm playing solo more. I want to think of some others too. Thanks!
Ha, thanks! And yes, Paths of Glory is on the Shelf of Shame Challenge as a carry-over from last year. I have to get my people reading the rules and then I'll jump in. :)
I tracked my board game plays in 2024 using pencil and paper... somehow I managed 108 plays, a majority being wargames. I'm satisfied with that amount. My wargaming goals in 2024 focused on going in depth with fewer games: play at least two games 10 times each, and five games 5 times each. Both accomplished early in the year. In 2025, I'm going to run an RPG campaign for my kids, and for wargames, I'm still building a short list of six games from my Shelf of Opportunity to explore.
100+ Wargaming plays is really well done, considering the average wargame is probably 3x as long as the average game? Nicely done, and good luck with building your list. :)
My goals are 1st, yes play more often. Like you said since I started making video for fun I forget to play the games. 2nd, jump into the Undaunted series. Planning to purchase the first game in the next two weeks and immerse myself into this system. Andrew Choong did a series of video on that game back in November and I got sold 3rd, play at least one full games of Axis & Allies and Shogun. I’ve been promising myself to do this for the last two years and I just have to do this in 2025 Not that many goals but I have to stick to these 😊
It's always good to have a small set of goals, achieve them, and then make another set of goals. All three of yours sound great. I've been playing Undaunted lately and really enjoying it. :)
For me, it’s play more solo games (especially the ones I already own) in 2025. Sometimes I get lazy or will get involved in other projects (e.g., audiobooks) and just don’t get the solitaire games to the table as much as I would like. History is endlessly fascinating and solitaire boardgaming is one way to explore that history. This was an excellent video Mike, thank you for sharing.
It was funny for me, Steve, in that I realized I had drifted from solo games over the past few months. Getting back to them in December really reminded me how much I enjoy them.
Totally get the stuck thing. Happens to me when I have a new idea for a video and not quite sure how to execute it. It's a great way to get projects done, like cleaning the garage, doing things to avoid doing something else. 😊
My goal is to make games more accessible by scripting them in tabletop simulator, so far just did this for terminator the deckbuilder. Its easy to lose focus but goals bring them in. Found your channel from the hunters. Really enjoyed your playthroughs!
That's a great goal! So they are elements in the game that execute rules or procedures in the game? And thanks re: The Hunters. That reminds me that I want to get back to Raiders of the Deep. :)
I have got to make a gaming resolution for the new year. I need to play more games solo and with family/friends. I am going to try for 2 or 3 games a month and go from there. I have turned into a game collector and not a game player. I have so many games still in shrink wrap.
I think this is a solid idea. I really started focusing on playing playing playing games in December and it was the best gaming decision I did. It changes everything.
Number 6!!!! That would be me. I get myself stuck all the time to the point I have to start over. This leads to Shelf of Shame issues. This can also kill the joy. Nice list.
It is amazing how easily this can happen, yes. I'm actually starting most games now without reading the rules first, and that is really helping me get over that. To be fair, I generally get crushed in the first couple of games, but eventually things sort themselves out and I can dip into the rules to clear up things. :)
@@ZillaBlitz I think I'll try your solution but I know when I watch your reviews and you say, "Truthfully, I think the difficulty level is more 4.5 than 6", I just shake my head say, "It's a seven". Lol. Your number 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, & 15, are on my Shelf of Opportunities. Mine 10 are Halls of Hegra, Sherman Leader, Enemy Action Ardennes, RAF, NATO the Cold War Goes Hot, Company of Heroes, skies Above Britain, Stalingrad Advance to the Volga, and Rebel Fury. Very much like last year but I got promoted back in April which seriously cut into my game time. Coming up on retirement reasonably soon so hopefully I can get back on track.
Good luck with your gaming ambitions for this year Michael. An admirable list but one I will never get close to achieving. Just too many other hobbies, even for a retired guy. :) Don't slack off on these videos to make time! You are appreciated here. Happy New Year!
My goal this year is to complete at least 12 full campaigns across various campaign-focused boardgames (roughly one per month). I can't count the number of times I've started a campaign in a game, played through one or two scenarios, and then get distracted and never end up following through.
Oh, that’s a great goal, and very ambitious too! Are you talking wargames or all sorts of games? I have a number of games like that, things like Jaws of the Lion and Gloomhaven, and then the Leader games and some other solo wargames. :)
@ All sorts of games, both war games and board games. In fact, I’m kicking it off today with Arkham Horror the Card Game. Jaws of the Lion is also on my list. I remember running through the first scenario some time ago, but never went further.
Good goals🙂 My main one for 2025 (gaming-wise) is to go try out some series & "big box" games, and if I don't like them get rid of them - to make space for more games😂 By "big box" I don't necessarilly mean monster wargames, just a physically big box, so both Pacific War and Age of Napoleon would fit in the bill here🙂
My goal is to focus on the joy of creating new Musket Battles videos. I have some great ideas that I really want to explore. I have one that involves playing remotely that involves a couple other people.
Kinda have simmilar goals like you for 2025. One huge difference though is, that I'd like to play LESS Boardgames this year. Play less different games, but play them more often than like 2 or 3 times and really really get to know them. This also goes along with another goal of mine: Buy LESS boardgames! My pile of shame is already big enough. Can't have more games collecting dust on the shelf. So i want to do more research on games and if I really need them. Goal 3: Play the games I buy right away and not let them stay unplayed for too long. So overall: Less consumerism and more playing!
You’re a better man than me mate: I’m aiming at two games per month … my brain needs time to absorb new rules, and I like to have a few attempts at every game. I too spent thirty years building my business with no time for gaming, but with retirement just two years away I’ve spent the last four years buying a lot of games (over 600 now). Many call it over-compensating….but I call it self-rewarding! Best regards.
I've been intentionally forcing myself to keep lots of different games going at the same time. My plan was to force me to learn to switch gears and analyze board game situations faster, but it might just be confusing me. :) Sounds like a great plan as you head to retirement! So many games to play. :)
Sweet ! I just found you last night. Stayed up till 3:30 watching the Hunters game lol Was Awesome !!! Have you played it again ? I think I woulda gone for Long Range on that last attack on the BB in the Arctic but I think you rolled high anyways :( I kept thinking, it'll be over soon lol Lasted over 2 years lol The yank subs in the pacific coming up next. Gonna start it tonight. I subscribed. Idk what that means but I did lol Rock On ! Prosit
I don't ever care much about tracking plays, but I don't care if anyone else does. Last year my goal was to play as many of my fall/winter sale games as possible. I think I did OK. I played about half of them. I was also going to play a full campaign of a grand strategic game. I learned Axis Empires, but I didn't play beyond one of the learning scenarios. I was also going to play one of my Fantasy/sci fi campaign games. i played several, although not the full campaigns. Finally, I was going to play ASL and that never happened. I played some old school Squad Leader though. So overall I hit about 50% and also played a large number of new to me games which weren't goals per se. So I am calling the year a qualified success. This year I want to finish off some of last year's goals, play as many new games as I can, and hopefully play some lingering oldies like D-Day at Omaha Beach. I want to get some of the new games that I played last year back to the table, specifically Last Gamble, Divine Right, and Burning Banners.
That sounds like a great year of gaming. Hitting on half of a set of goals and having fun while doing it is better than hitting on a full set of goals and getting all stressed out about it. :) I wonder if it might be fun to have a Game of the Month that we all play, independent of each other, and report in on, somehow. ... *thinking*
It still sounds pretty ambitious to me. Good Luck. My tracking and making my games easier on me I use spreadsheets & Dabases. What I like is I customize it for my needs. Have you ever played Battlelines: Stalingrad Campaign? What I want to do is rewrite the rules book. I do not want to change the rules. Altough there a couple I think could be modified. But the main goal is make it understandable and easier to get into. There is one gentleman who made videos. Not to be critical but if you are new to the game you might be confused he adds to much detail and talks a lot of strategy. I was lost in the detail. A striaght playthrough to get the feel of the flow. No that i think the video were bad. I do think the rules are great with for lookin up the icons. They did update rules BGG with a playthrough. Anyway I think the game has some good rules. I know its out of print but I do not want to give up on it even if just for me.
My goal is to learn to play the Combat games 1&2, Warfighter, Western Front Ace, Stuka Leader, Picket Duty and one tank game. Either American Tank Ace or Patton's Best. I want to try Sherman Leader but not ready to pay the $200-$300 for the game from Ebay. I like games that have a campaign mode so you can follow a squad or crew. Hoping Combat games is the next evolution of the Ambush games.
Just the one. Two piles of games. 1) those I have had a while and never played. 2) the bigger pile, new arrivals ,some new, some pre owned. None go back on the shelf until they have been played. For you will work not influence reaching your goals, some interesting choices though.
Are You using BG Stats to control Your progress with goals/challenges? Highly recommend doing it if You enjoy stats. I am using BG Stats sixth year and started setting challenges few years ago. 2025 is going to be most challenging so far in most positive way.
Yes! This is a great suggestion and I started doing so a month ago. It took a bit to figure out how helpful those "Insights" and "Challenges" buttons are, but I love them now. :)
@@ZillaBlitz as long you will keep puting data in it creates amazing info. I never been great with keeping record until this app. After all this time I have plenty of data to play with. Suprising fun. 🤠
I found your channel not long ago and I really want to get into this wargame boardgame stuff..... but its kind of overwhelming with all the options tbh. I want a game where It has some rpg perma death aspects to it.. If thats a thing.... like losing a specific character in a mission might really sting yah know? for ex. " I may have a certain solider/squad with me but if i lose him on say mission 6.... he wont be with me on the rest of the campaign. That would lead me to changing my tactics and adapting to new circumstances. (forgive me idk what im talking about 😂😂)
Hello, Happy New year! I have a question please: Have you ever played "Almoravid" ? If yes, please what do you think about it? I wanted to know your opinion before to buy it. ❤
I have it, but it's on my Shelf of Opportunity. I have heard it's good, and I really like the Levy & Campaign I've played so far. I have also heard it can be a touch unbalanced in some of the scenarios, but I don't know how true that is.
Great video as usual. For me #8 is the only one to focus on. Whatever it takes not to lose the joy of playing these games. Do I have a shelf of shame? Yes. Do I need to be less distracted and get more games to the table? Sure. However, I have other things in life that gives me joy..... Binge watching favorite shows, having a beer with my next door neighbor solving the worlds problems, going for walks/ getting more exercise working out or working on the landscape as well as family time etc for a nice balance. Thus #8 because feeling obligated to always have to play a game one after the other becomes a chore not joy. When I'm in the mood and in the zone then yes, I play away and binge. Also, I've slimmed down my games to the ones I really like to play and sold off the ones that are just ok in my book or complex rules / record keeping. I don't need to collect that many games, just enjoy the best in the categories I'm interested in. This brings joy and reduces the time and financial pressure. I've found playing my series games is a joy (OST, BOB, Simonitch 19XX, Civil War brigade series by Worthington, Battles of Napoleon Eylau 1807 1st in series, Flying pig games and a select few others) as it's easier & joyful already knowing the rules than memorizing new systems. My overall fear in this hobby is burnout if I force myself into a set schedule to play games. I thank you and others for taking so much free time out of your schedule to provide us with the joy of watching your well produced and informative yet fun videos. Keep up the great work and blessings to you and your family in 2025!
This sounds like a great, healthy way to approach board games! Thanks for sharing it. :) And my pleasure on the videos, it gives me more energy than it takes from me. :)
Yep, I found it a bit tricky to get going with, until I realized that the "Challenges" and "Insights" buttons on the main screen are really powerful. :) It's a great app for creating a set of games that you own, creating challenges, and tracking how often you play and what you play. It's really deep, so you can track time played, who played, won-lost, all sorts of stuff. I use it at a more superficial level, just tracking my collection of games, several challenges, and games played. :)
Great comment, thanks! Two of the general channel goals for this upcoming year is to expand more into PC wargames and explore more crunchy Euros. Kind of fits into that "Experiment More" goal but not specifically stated. :)
Very simple, play more games. Try to play games not played or rarely played. 2024 was not a good year for gaming. Spend less time on social media following American politics, strange pastime for an Australian.
I started taking a more digitally minimalist approach last year and it's amazing the time it frees up, yes. I think you'll find it remarkable how much extra time you end up with.
That really is something I should dig into more this year. I tend to shy away from it because when I create videos or take game photos I like to show the real game with real pieces, just don't think Vassal looks as good. But for playing, yeah, Vassal would help with a lot of the space issues.
What are you boardgaming and wargaming goals for 2025? I'd love to hear your thoughts, goals, and ideas. :)

(forgive me idk what im talking about 😂😂)
No, that actually makes total sense. I think the Leader series might check off those boxes. You might want to check out some of those games? :)
@@ZillaBlitz Thanks so much!!!! Ill check those out.
@ZillaBlitz Thank you for your reply. 😊
My goal would be to actually get the games off of the shelf that I bought years ago and never played… lol. Seriously.
There is strength in numbers. You are not alone. :)
Is better dice rolling one of them :)
The world would be a nicer place if everyone adopted #8😃
It really does solve a lot of problems. :)
I have literally promised myself to not buy more than 2 games this year. My shelf of shame is just too big !!
I'm working more on a "contracting universe" approach, where I play more game than I get. :)
What is the Boardgame tracking app?
What does it do?
BG Stats app
@keithtalbot9504 Thanks
Yep, I found it a bit tricky to get going with, until I realized that the "Challenges" and "Insights" buttons on the main screen are really powerful. :)
It's a great app for creating a set of games that you own, creating challenges, and tracking how often you play and what you play. It's really deep, so you can track time played, who played, won-lost, all sorts of stuff. I use it at a more superficial level, just tracking my collection of games, several challenges, and games played. :)
I hope you don't forget computer wargames for your channel.
Great comment, thanks! Two of the general channel goals for this upcoming year is to expand more into PC wargames and explore more crunchy Euros. Kind of fits into that "Experiment More" goal but not specifically stated. :)
@@ZillaBlitz Great to hear - Thanks!
@@ZillaBlitzIndeed, difficult given current events
Yes, I can definitely understand, for me setting up a "Media Diet" is key to figuring out how to stay connected but not overwhelmed. :)
Try Vassal. Have as many simultaneous games as you wish.
That really is something I should dig into more this year. I tend to shy away from it because when I create videos or take game photos I like to show the real game with real pieces, just don't think Vassal looks as good. But for playing, yeah, Vassal would help with a lot of the space issues.
