The problem is stereotypes works in video games. And whoever designed the game tries very hard to go against common stereotypes. And this was their fundamental problem. You can't have a spy character with big machine gun who worries about their student loan. When we think of a spy are who is master of disguise. To blend in easy, they dress subtlety. Having a normal body frame would also go into that subtlety.
I get what you mean kinda, I remember the new Saints Row game did that exact thing. It wasn't relatable at all and came off super cheesy and annoying. But I don't think that's what happened here for Concord, the characters didn't have some weird off topic traits or gen Z/melenial goals. It honestly seemed spot on, a team of bounty hunters trying to get registered to be the best in the galaxy and up their rep (so far as we knew). As far as the spy character you mention there is a Character that fits the mold but I will say the pink body would kinda go against being subtle even tho they can go invisible and disarm. I thought they looked cool anyway 😆. Also if we can't play around these stereotypical roles it could become stale because everyone won't venture out the box. So I don't mind as long as it's done well y'know?
For the last one he is Joking. It's also Not a stereotype. He changed MR.D be based on Cholo's who are a real group and they do talk like that. I know. because I live around them. "Mr.D" is literally someone I can see outside my window and I work with.
@@Bios101 Its one of those things where unless you live around it it's hard for people to understand as its a racially specific subculture with gangland origins. In Media "Cholo's" are usually used as a Joke Spanish character or a ganster. Often both, really. much bigger in popularity during the 90's. although today it's pretty much just a sub culture you would see more in poorer latin communities like where I live. Of course they are not actually gang related as its pretty much absorbed into the culture you would see more among younger people trying to act gangster but not actually gang related. I'm not trying to fault you for thinking it was bad, likely it's because your only exposure to it are because of those media representations, where they come of as caricatures. I'm just pointing out that There are people who do act, look, speak and dress like that and that it's 100% a real thing Otherwise i think its fine. He looks like one of my old friends from highschool lol.
Yooo thank you for informing me of the subculture. And yea I was thinking of the caricatures from what I've seen on media. I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to explain it to me :)
Honestly, the Bazz and Daw redesigns look great, but Emari almost feels out of place. Also, yes, he does have reasoning for it however it takes away from her potential uniqueness by not making her bulky and exposing her chest. With Bazz it fits like a glove and helps communicate that she’s supposed be agile with a knife.
@insectostrich4407 I agree too, especially with the redesign for Bazz. Emari had gone in a whole other direction. This tells me when he does a part 2 there will be more drastic changes losing the essence of the original designs
@insectostrich4407 oh thanks for the heads-up! Ill work on a video for it :D I think his efforts are good, but I can see what the devs were aiming for. Visuals are one thing but there are a lot of context missing which also ads to the designs. So I think just some alterations like with Bazz and Daw are better than a full redesign because of those aspects
@@Bios101 Yeah, I think only because you lose that sense of power from the character and variety with the silhouettes with how he changed Emari. It’s not he did a bad job overall.
@@insectostrich4407 Exactlyyyy lol, the silhouette thing is something mentioned in the Game Developer reaction I did too. It started looking the same, not a bad job just needs more iterations :)
honestly, as much as i like some of these redesigns (the first one especially), i have to take points off for what CriticalArt said about people with larger builds. it just comes off as presumptuous at first, then downright disrespectful to view people with large bodies as unable to move around quickly. you gave your own example of someone who's reasonably fit for their build and that's perfectly fine. and then he had to throw in that "just eat right and stop eating sweets gg ez" as if some people's bodies don't function differently or have to deal with eating disorders. i'm not saying you shouldn't eat right but his comment came off as ignorant to me. i also think in his endeavor to improve the original designs, he completely changed the character entirely in some cases. Bazz had the best redesign overall (so far), though she shows a bit more skin than i think was necessary and i still have a bit of fondness for what the original tried to go for. for Emari and Daw though, i almost thought they were different characters entirely. you could definitely get away with a Heavy Weapons Guy or Zarya-esque design for Emari while maintaining a unique and stylistic flair, like a sort of space-faring super-soldier built like a brute. her new design gave off Garnet from Steven Universe more than anything tbh, and while that's not a bad thing and could work, the open bra was just ??? No. Daw especially i could not let off the hook if the intent was to redesign an _existing_ character. Mr. Dee could function as an entirely new character in a separate piece of media and fleshed out further, _that's_ very viable, but replacing Daw? a lot got lost in translation to get what he got imo. what could've happened was a simple shift in color scheme and then evaluating if the accessories and textures look good. comparing the three's original designs with the new ones at the end together, i had a harder time being convinced those guys all come from different planets with the new ones tbh. Original Emari tells me no facility on Earth would strap a single person with that much armor, but the new Emari looks more like RoboCop aesthetic which is obviously from Earth. i'm probably seeing it that way because of the rendering technology making the redesigns look that way, but that's the feeling i'm getting.
Yes I completely agree with this, after the first design it didn't feel like the same characters anymore. Which is apparent because he already didn't like the game. So it was easy to just completely change it. And I didn't like his comments either, it a constant then throughout the backlash of Concord but I also have to say that people who would appeal to this game haven't said anything...so I feel there is something to be taken from here to a point.
" it just comes off as presumptuous at first, then downright disrespectful to view people with large bodies as unable to move around quickly." Read that again, you cant possibly be that dense... YES, Larger = Slower and to think otherwise is just plain stupid! the reality is that F = m.a is a thing.
The last one is the only half decent, the first two is just, lets make it sexy which is just a dogshit scape goat in design philosophy instead of putting real effort into an interesting design.
I would have really liked it if he kept the essence of the original designs or made enhancements that would benefit that vision. His new designs aren't bad necessarily it just calls for a different audience and a different game
I literally only like the first one in terms of staying close to the original design. Second one is cunty and would look better as a new character. Kind of reminds me of garnet a little from Steven Universe. Third one is okay but I don’t agree with the name change and I definitely think he could’ve been slightly bigger. My only problem with the video is all the fat comments and jokes, ESPECIALLY the unfunny lizzo one. Him saying weight loss is easy and just eat less. It’s a simple concept not easy to execute smh. You can tell he’s never been fat before. Like tbh I don’t think characters should be as big as how the third one is but a little more meat on the bones is okay. When we play games, we’re drawn to characters we find appealing or would wanna be. No one wants to be a 600lb support running around the map💀
Weight loss is more or less about your calory intake and how much you're burning, it's a hard process but it's within more or less everyone's control unless they have something wrong with them. Stop talking like being overweight is a disability.
The Amari redesign is so ridiculous it looks like a character from a bad 90's Sci Fi porno. Baz also looks very uninspired, he just made the character's clothes smaller to be more sexually appealing, didn't really "redesign" much.
Baz actually fits into her role more, a sleek, knife throwing, acrobatic person. The glasses give more vision compared to the old one, and the overall design doesnt stray to far from the original's colorscheme. "Made the clothes smaller to be more appealing" Your not gonna run, jump and do great acrobatics with a very long and heavy coat. The Jacket fits well, the body suit could have covered more to compensate tbf. As for the shoes, I agree with Bios saying they arent nice looking, making them red with purple or gold (ala Ironman) accents could have made them pop more besides the generic grey Amari, I agree. There are better ways to design a tank lol.
