899 with student discount is just insane. Hard to not recommend this laptop over basically anything else in the market for productivity.
The storage hurts tho

@@Flattithefishyou can buy an external ssd and velcro tape it on the machine. Tape another dongle while you are at it.
@ What shortage? I placed an order the day after, was scheduled for delivery the 18th and got word today it'll be delivered on the 14th.
EDIT: Damn. You said *STORAGE*. Sorry. I read 'Shortage'
That said, on my 2020 MBA M1 base with 256GB, I still have 90+GB free 5 years later and I use it every day. If you need extra storage, grab a small external SSD to store your actual files on.
@ Yea I feel like the MacBook Air is good but it really has 2 issues.
1stly the Storage, it should be 512gb or 1TB, I get external ssds but then your laptop isn’t like gonna fit well ina bag or something.
2nd the refresh rate, 60HZ hurts in 2025
I have had a Mac Air M1 since 2021 and this machine is still working as a beast. No signs of slowing down. Still almost the same battery backup
Update will slow you soon
@Jwdude123 BS
I’m in the same boat and I just ordered the most specked out 2025 air you can get. I’m so excited
Apple did so well with M1. Like yourself, my M1 MacBook Pro 2021 runs Logic Pro and Adobe apps like a beast after all the updates these years!
Same here
I’m currently using the M1 MacBook Pro, it hasn’t given me any problems at all, but for whatever reason, every time I watch a review of the latest MacBooks, I feel the need to upgrade
consumerism. don’t worry, M1 and M2 are still great, aaand they just got cheaper
You wouldnt need any upgrade for few more years I think.
Dont upgrade so soon...
Same here, the only issue I have is that I can't use multiple screens and that's literally the only reason I want to upgrade
@ With adaptors i think that you can use multiple screens. Just search it.
I still have the M1 and man this thing has not failed me and still feels new and so fast.
Same!
same! works great still
Same
I have the M2 and same. Feels just as fast now as it did when i got it, even after having 30 tabs in safari open
Same, I want to upgrade but can’t come up with a practical reason to do so!
I'm using the base M1 Air and I used it for video editing, music production, gaming, and even coding and it can handle it pretty good. And with Apple finally doubling the base RAM in new MacBooks, I would love to see them double the base storage considering storage prices are not that expensive anymore. I can buy a 2 TB SSD for $100, whereas Apple charges $800. I think 512 GB won't kill them.
The thing for apple is that they make a lot of money from these upgrades, and they know that few people will actually need to have more than 512gb that means if they upgrade the entry level mac they will loose the money they currently gain on the 512 model, which I believe are quite popular.
@@deluxgaming6742 yea but everyone need 512 gb
I'm coding for 12 years and this laptop is the best price/performance machine available for absolutely comfortable coding. While you don't run VM clusters on it you won't get any freezes ever.
These big companies have algorithms calculating what would give then the best profits… unfortunately they don’t actually care about us, only as much as it makes them more money
So it performs Well with 10+ Tracks in Logic? Thats where my i9 MPB struggles a lot lol
I was holding off for the longest time upgrading my 2016 MacBook Pro, to of all things, the new M4 Air, and because of this video and another one which demoed how well it handles video editing, I was sold. Been using my new Midnight Black 24/512 Air now for the second day, and I'm not disappointed! Thankfully, there was no blood on my box, so I hope no Apple employees were harmed in the making of my MacBook Air 😅. The only thing I hope gets shed is my own sweat and tears as I put it through its paces doing livestreaming and video editing! Thanks, and keep up the great work! 👍

Just bought this for my college bound daughter! She got it yesterday and being her first Mac she is thrilled! After it installed all the updates, she put in her credentials form her iPhone and BOOM...it just works. All of her pics are there, access to our shared movies. Apple is great! Love their products.
Love the synchronization with the iPhones. It’s so easy to do
@@Yorker1998that’s how they get you! An Apple Store employee once told me that they aim to get people to think more about their second Apple device than their first one, because then they’re locked in, with how easily everything synchronizes.
Currently rocking an M2 Air connected to an Apple Studio Display (the monitor being my favorite Apple product I’ve purchased, unexpectedly!) & Magic Keyboard / Trackpad, along with a current gen M4 iPad Pro, as well as the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Everything works together flawlessly, and little niceties like seamlessly copying and pasting between devices (even images and files) really seals the deal for me.
Not to mention they make trading up when new phones release incredibly easy - the Apple Store offered me 2.5X what anyone else did for my iPhone 15 Pro Max when I purchased the 16, and as upfront credit vs a carrier bill credit or similar.
Too easy, as the title says :)
I did it for my sister, we actually downgraded from the MacBook Pro m4 to this, returned it and saved our money and it works just as well for her adobe software.
Based apple target consumer is based
fantastic! just so you know, google synchronize just as easily all your files, pictures and movies from an android phone to virtually any device since chrome can be installed everywhere... even on a mac and an iphone
the only drawback, you cant synch an apple watch or benefit of all the tech of airpods with other brands, but lets be assured that the EU will come after Apple on these obvious anti-competition fake barriers

I got an M1 Air for college 5 years ago, and in a room full of students running CAD/CAM programs on “better” laptops, mine was often the only computer not to crash on big operations. This thing has been seriously capable for years now, and it still keeps up with anything I throw at it.

I just got my first ever MacBook TODAY. It's a MacBook Air M3 chip, and I'm crazy loving it
My M1 MacBook Air shows zero sign of slowing down since I bought it. By far the best laptop I’ve ever owned. I can’t imagine how good the m4 is
I agree, its an amazing device, if I picked the 16gb ram instead of 8gb I wouldn't even think about upgrading but I do notice some bottlenecking while using blender or cad
The M1 chip was truly revolutionary. It's first device i've felt no need to upgrade from. It just works.
Hey. I need some help.
As the m3 chip on the mba has become an m4, does it mean that it can handle compiling and editing just as good as the pro?
What's the difference now???
Yup, i had no intention of upgrading my 2015 macbook pro in 2020. Then the M1 came out and I couldn’t resist. I bought the 16GB, 1TB version and its been perfect. Its still super fast and i cant imagine needing to upgrade.

5:05 I've owned the M2 air (16GB of ram) for the last couple of years and I do use Logic Pro and Ableton Suite quite a lot. It handles it perfectly, even with both programs opened at the same time. When I bought it it exceeded my expectations by far. I hope my current one still lasts a few more years, but If Apple maintains this great-deal mentality I'll definitely buy the same laptop. Plus, I must say this new color looks gorgeous.
hey have the m2 air, after 1.5 years the battery heath has dropped drastically. any recommendations or you know why maybe?
@@vvdbnhhhdd2671 I've had my 15" M2 Air for a year and 7 months. The battery health is at 100%. Are you leaving it plugged in often while it's already fully charged? I only plug mine in when it drops below 50-60% and then disconnect the cable when it's fully charged.
i’ve got the base model m1 air, and yeah it handles logic pro and ableton no problem lmao
I’ve felt the same way with my M3. Air. It’s my first MacBook ever and despite using it every single day, I still get an immediate happy/giddy feeling when I start. Everything about it just feels perfect for coding / sys admin / etc. the keyboard, the weight, the battery life, the screen quality. And as a long time Linux/GNOME user, I really enjoy MacOS a lot and felt right at home.

Love the simple yet valuable review ❤ could someone please help me identify the soundtrack towards the end? 8:10
I am a high school student and still using MacBook air 2017 and it works fine for some school project, lectures and binge watching ❤
I dont understand why people keep saying that the macbook air is only for casual users "browsing emails, opening a few chrome tabs and editing a picture once in a while". I have been using a macbook air m2 with 8g of ram for the past two years. It got me through the end of a mecanical engineering degree, ran parametric cad for fusion 360 and is now my full time machine for doing web and backend developpement. It is doing great! Right now it is almost always running 4gs of docker containers plus multiple tabs, even microsoft stuff wich is known to eat ram on macs. I will sometimes get to 6gs of swap without the computer slowing down. I feel like there is a real market for the macbook air, when you want something light, powerfull and that has no fans. Any thoughts?
100%! Gotten through my PhD on a M1 and have been editing video in Davinci Resolve easily, audio post and mixing as well as python dev tasks recently. Also, I am getting nervous when hooking up an external HDD now which actually makes noise! Not used to that anymore at all :)
it is for casuals, try to run blender , after effects or any alternative , its not made for those and for that price you can get windows gaming laptops that can do all those plus gaming. Thus this is a good choice for casual stuff and portability.
Your laptop is swapping out to the NVMe drive. The NVMe drive is fast enough for your workflow.
Using an M2 Air with 16GB of RAM for WEB and Backend with Docker but somehow i also get to 6GB of Swap sometimes :D
I have the case of using a displayLink dock which is pretty cpu heavy workload and will sometimes result in bottlenecking. But there is no other option to run 2 external Monitors on the M2. This is the reason why i will be happy to upgrade to the M4 later this year. Luckily in Germany the company will pay for my new device.
He said this in the video though. You CAN do all of this on an Air, but it's not made for, nor marketed for that. It's a device for students and people who just need a computer for lower level productivity tasks like eMails, browsing or things like the Office suite.
Bought a base level M1 Air in 2020. It's a dream machine for my humble needs. I do light photo and video editing on it in addition to the standard document writing and web browsing. It's just amazingly lightweight and fast, with great battery life and software stability. I'm afraid I've been turnt and will be sticking with Apple laptops from now on.
I have the same experience. It’s been a perfect laptop that suits my needs. Travels so well too, definitely sticking with Mac for the foreseeable future. Still runs perfectly to this day.
Same here, writing it from my MBA M1 with 8GB of RAM. If it has 16GB I wouldn't feel any need to change it ever ...
@@JoATTech Same. I do get RAM warnings from time to time, so yeah, I shoulda sprung for 16 gb. Still, it’s been more of an annoyance than a show stopper.
@@calebcourteau When I bought my MBA M1, the memory upgrade to 16GB bumped prices by 33% ... this was and is insane. So I stayed with 8GB.
I'm actually eyeing MBP 16" .... used M1 MAX probably, but waiting for good deal (I missed few already).
Got the MacBook Air M1 as well in 2021 for $799. Best purchase I’ve ever made upgrading from a 2010 MacBook Pro that I beat up lol. Although this new MacBook Air M4 is really attractive for the price, I’m probably still gonna stick with the m1 air for a 1-2 more years.
I have used Dell Latitude and XPS, and Lenovo Thinkpads in the past. Last year I started using a Macbook M3 at work and was shocked at how fast and efficient it was. I use it for running often 5+ instances of VSCode, docker containers, many dozens of Chrome tabs, Slack, Spotify, 1-2 2k/4k external monitors, and it never even gets warm much less turns the fans on. I bought the Macbook Air M4 with the 512GB storage upgrade last week for personal use and I think it is the best laptop I've ever owned, and is significantly cheaper than the last XPS and the last Thinkpad I got. With these Apple chipsets and unified memory and such excellent passive cooling (or chips that don't get that hot to begin with under most workloads), Apple has so massively surpassed the PC market and Intel/AMD CPUs for the majority of users.
Dont forget that old referbished m1 and m2 macs are also a good option depending on what you can get them for just gotta make sure the battery’s are good

It's so they can inevitably force Apple Intelligence to always be on, so then you're screwed out of that RAM
About laptops getting boring, and not much changing: That's great. I would love to see more of that. Refresh the hardware every couple years, with a little better this and that. It's a mature product. It doesn't need to be reinvented. The need to be "exciting" just means the feature you care about most is always potentially on the chopping block to make the new model "fresh." I would much rather that this year's model is just a slightly better version of the previous one. I don't need it to be exciting, I just need it to work.
Yeah but Apple want to sell you a new one every year and buy back your old one for half what you paid for it and sell it to poor people for 90% of what you paid originally, they make even more money this way and keep things moving along, you paying once and keeping it for 10 years kills their buiness model.
@@Thetache what are you talking about, the entry price is comically high literally for that exact reason
macbooks are built like tanks and software support longevity is what they're renowned for, chalk it up to your short-lived Windows 10 bloatware if you want to talk about sustainable business models
and before you play the repairability card, it's also gotten worse on the Windows side of the ultrabook pond
@ I still find myself frustrated by software lifecycles. Granted, I consider a 5-year-old laptop to be "gently used" and assume that it will still have some years left in it.
But I am literally running into this exact problem right now. My general purpose computer is a 2018 Mac Mini. Work is BYOD these days, so I keep that on my hand-me-down 2014 Mac Mini. I have no desire to upgrade either -- they do the job just fine. .... Except I can no longer update software on the 2014, because newer apps require a current (which these days, means "this year or last year" release) of Mac OS. And Mac OS 13+ doesn't run on a 2014 Mac Mini.
It could. But it doesn't. Because .. ehh.. you've had it for 10 years. It's time to deposit another coin if you want to keep playing.
The hardware's fine. Apple just decided not to include drivers for it anymore, and blacklist it from the installer. And of course they tune the dev software to require the most recent OSes and that's IT.
I know I'm in the minority here, but that should not be okay.
You could honestly get through a Logic Pro session pretty easily on the Air. I mean as long as you don't have a huge amount of tracks, vsts, and plugins running.

keyword here is "cheaper" you don't often see companies making products cheaper. usually they only get more and more expensive and they will always find a way to justify doing so. The base Macbook Pro in 2020 was 1499 Euro now it is 1929. The base Macbook Air was 1199 Euro in 2020, 1299 in 2024 and now it is back to 1199.
true. but to be fair, the macbook pro now is very different from the previous geneation pro. The display for example is in a different league. In fact, the old macbook pro is more comparable to the macbook air now. So the pro has gotten much cheaper. On top of all of this, 1499 euros in 2020 is equal to around 1841 euros today. this is also ignoring increased energy costs in europe (heating the shop floors, powering all demo devices, transportation and deliveries). this also ignores the decreasing disposable income of european customers, resulting in less purchases. 1199 euros today is equal to around 978 euros in 2020. So its actually gotten 221 euros cheaper (while the costs are much higher). The price has been made lower to increase profits, since the price of living in europe is higher now (less demand for premium products).
To be fair, the 13 inch MacBook Pro was just a MacBook Air with a boxy shape, hence the cheaper price, people doing *actual* demanding work would NEVER buy a 13 inch pro because it simply wasn't fit for most demanding workloads, it was severely underpowered and overpriced, the proper pro computer (if you could even call it that) apple sold at the time was the 16 inch, the 13 inch shared its name and build, but they were very different machines overall, but now? both MBPs are the same, the only real difference is screen size. So it's more like they're now selling a smaller version of the 16inch pro.
Electronics get cheaper all the time. This has been true for decades. for example, the TV I bought in 2018, the equivalent version today is ~$1200 cheaper.
That’s called deflation. Bad sign lol
1200 Euro in 2020 is about 1600 Euro today due to the inflation, so it is cheaper

I've been using MacBooks throughout all my experience, and it's never given me an issue. For wanting a laptop within the apple ecosystem they work great IMO
@@250IZ Personally, I've never used Matlab and shapefiles for my econometric research projects, but I would imagine it would be able to handle the processing just as well as Stata, Python, or R. I could be wrong though because it sounds more visual based. One thing I do know is the most important thing when it comes to data analytics is make sure you have at least 16GB of Memory. A lot of the work I do is moderately to big size data sets from IPUMS CPS, some private companies, FRED, etc. And all the data I import from there (which is a lot) has never caused my laptop to overheat or run slow. What kind of work do you with Matlab? I've always wanted work with it, but it's never been a priority to me. Do you recommend it for anything?

Almost 4 years I've been using Mac Air M1 until now.. It is still running smoothly and satisfying... Good Job apple!
As a photographer and cinematographer, I purchased an M3 MacBook Air with 24GB of RAM as my travel laptop. I can easily edit 4k video in DaVinci Resolve; the only drawback is that it takes longer to render. For me, it's insane.
the thing about rendering is, unless you're really in a rush, it's mostly unattended time. I leave mine alone to render a few minutes while I watch youtube lol
But 60 Hz, isn’t that a bummer!
@@shivanshwadhwani4417 I have a MBP, and I turned on low power mode for months before I even realized that it disables promotion.

7:28 Strongly disagree here. The M4 with 16GB RAM is $900 with educational discount (anybody can get it), and it'll probably even come with a $150 gift card offer starting in May. Going with the M3 with half the RAM would be a big mistake.
How can you get the educational discount? My college days are wayyyy gone lol

@@TonyMontana33452 Not looking for a war here but I am in the same spot with my M1 MBA. I know my use case- emails, YT, audiobooks, picture gallery with ability for basic edits. My low mileage, 2020 Honda CRV is running great, looks good to me, etc. Should i go get anew one. same! bought it in 2023 for around 900 euros. I use it alongside my desktop PC and the battery is still amazing. it works flawlessly... I can only imagine how fast M4 actually is
6:12 bruh I literally bought a pro beacuse of 120hz. I hate coolers in it and I absolutely enjoy the power and lightweight design packed in air but I CANT STAND 60hz! Why isn't there an upgrade to air version with 120hz for like even 500$ more? It would be no brainer for many people like me. And yeah, there are really many such people who only bought excessive pro because of 120hz.

My 2022 M2 Air still feels new. Love this line and feel like I was tricked into buying 'Pro' all my life before this.
To be fair, Pro models had a much greater gap in everyday performance feel before M series chips were introduced on Macbooks.

Yo I just upgraded to the M4 MacBook Air Base model from Mid 2012 MacBook Pro.
Not a heavy user, mild editing and lots of office work. The reason why I upgraded was few softwares I need Aren’t compatible with my 2012 machine honestly it’s a bummer otherwise it’s a good machine despite being 10+ years old.
I’m absolutely loving the M4 MBA.
Best thing about Apple machines is if you are just an average user even with a bit of everything (editing, office work, school) don’t even look at the specs just get the one you can afford and you will love it.

Furry gang woooo!
What? Where?
5:54 Exactly! Give the Pros the Tandem OLED from the iPads and give the Air the Mini LED so there's still a better display on the Pro (OLED is still king) and at the same time we get a better display on the Air. That's when I'll be upgrading next
Very little update unless watching immersive dark videos. What is annoying are reflective screens.
@@brandon-22 It's not just the contrast but also brightness. Apple is able to push SDR at 1000 nits with the M4 MacBook Pros (you can find many apps that can do that with the previous Mini LED MacBook Pros as well) and trust me that makes a huge difference. And yes, the option for nano texture is absolute game changer especially for MacBook Air users who aren't in the market for a more accurate display but rather a more legible one because people use them outdoors alot
This ….
They should also do the same for the iPad Air as well. The iPad Air now has a 13inch display. Now that the iPad Pro isn’t using mini led again, it would be great for the iPad Air to now come with the mini led display. And pls God, Apple should make it a 120hz display. It now impossible to justify 60hz in 2025. At least upgrade the iPad Pro to 160 or 200hz so that the Air can now come with 120.
Apple basically charge you more for less.
And 60hz 🤦🏻

I’ve had a 2017 MacBook Pro since it came out and I’m still debating if I want to finally jump in on the new M series MacBooks. I don’t need a Pro anymore but the larger 15” air is very appealing to me. Guess I just need that final push to pull the trigger.
A laptop is not a phone. 512GB storage should be the bare minimum on any laptop nowadays imo and a thousand dollars is not a small amount of money. Especially considering most laptop users keep their laptops for many years, that is not enough at all. And if it is enough to some people, then the majority of those people do not need an M4 chip at all imo. I think saying 256GB of storage is enough and bragging about the M4 chip are two contradicting statements because high performance needs complementary storage. I have no doubt it’s an amazing laptop. But I still think the base model is a sneaky illusion if you think about it.
At first I wanted to object, but in the end I agreed with your argument, well said!
Do not need an M4 chip….well unfortunately you can only get this size air with M3 or M4….

yeah m3 AIR, and the battery lasts me for a day and a half if I just worked on a small project, if it is a big project and I need to draw more power it will last me around 7-8 hours which is more than enough for a laptop. Who cares, man. It’s chump change for a device that you’ll use for at least 5 years or more. The overall package of the MacBook makes up for the exorbitant prices of the spec upgrades.
