  • My final video of 2023 comes from my 3rd visit to Ipswich on the Great Eastern Main Line as well being the terminus for services from the Felixstowe Branch Line from Felixstowe, East Suffolk Line from Lowestoft as well as Cambridge and Peterborough.
Featuring services from Greater Anglia and plus two freighters from Freightliner
The first station to exist in Ipswich was originally located on the south end of Stoke Tunnel known as Ipswich Stoke Hill which opened in 1846 by the Eastern Union Railway which at the time situated to a nearby old quay.
It was constructed by the Ipswich & Bury Railway which opened it's line from Ipswich to Bury St Edmunds after the former Ipswich Stoke Hill was opened.
The East Suffolk Line first opened in 1854 by the former Halesworth, Beccles and Haddiscoe Railway which eventually was taken over by the East Suffolk Railway in 1858 which around that time expanded North to Lowestoft, East to Great Yarmouth and South to Ipswich in 1859.
Todays Ipswich station was re-sited in 1860 which today has 4 Platforms with Platforms 2, 3 and 4 being through ones whilst Platform 1 is a bay Platform.
This came at a time when the railways of East Anglia were in financial trouble until it was amalgamated by the Great Eastern Railway which included taking over the Eastern Counties Railway and the East Suffolk Railway in 1862.
In 1877 the Felixstowe Railway & Pier Company opened it's branch Line from Felixstowe which follows the course of the East Suffolk Line until after Westerfield.
Platforms 3 and 4 date from expansion in 1883
Stoke Tunnel is the only tunnel on the entire Great Eastern Main Line which at it's southern end use to be where the former GER Engine Shed stood which at the time was the 3rd largest after Stratford and Cambridge however it closed in 1968.
The former footbridge had to be removed in 1983 to make room for the electrification of the GEML which arrived at Ipswich on April 17th 1985 with electric services however it wasn't until May 1st when Intercity services began running electric services to Ipswich although it wasn't until May 1987 when full electric services were able to run to Norwich
A 2nd footbridge which enables step free access with lifts to all Platforms dates from June 2011 which since February 2012 that time that all services are now operated by Greater Anglia.
The Class 755 Flirts were built by Stadler in Bossang, Switzerland, and Siedice in Poland with the 3 car sets being 755/3s and 4 car sets being 755/4s not only run in electric mode between Ipswich and Stowmarket, Ely to Stansted Airport as well as Norwich to Colchester.
In diesel mode on non-electrified the 3 Deutz 16 Litre V8 Engines and 755/4s have 4 which are situated in a power pack rather than underneath the carriage. The power pack has a passageway for passengers to pass through without the usual end gangways.
They first entered service between July 2019 and January 2020 when it took over all the rural routes displacing the Class 153s, 156s and Class 170s.
Today they operate from Ipswich hourly services to Felixstowe, Lowestoft, Cambridge via Newmarket and once every 2 hours to Peterborough via Ely.
The Class 745s nowadays the main intercity which like the 755s were also built by Stadler with the 745s being built in Bossang, Switzerland which replaced the Class 90s loco hauled sets between September 2019 and March 2020 which today provide a half hourly service from London Liverpool Street to Norwich.
The Class 745 and 755 Flirts are maintained at Crown Point Depot near Norwich.
The Class 720s which operate an hourly service mostly terminate via Platform 4 and occasionally Platform 3 which then proceed to reverse via the Ipswich Down and Ups Goods Siding.
The Class 720s began running in November 2020 which originally ordered in August 2016 as 89 720/5s (5 car) and 22 720/1s (10 Car) however in September 2020 the order was revised on the 720/1s to 44 5 car sets which according to Greater Anglia at the time was to enable flexibility.
Former ex GA Class 90s moved over to Freightliner to replace the life Expired Class 86s for electric freight services whilst other services are hauled by Class 66s or occasionally Class 70s.
Whilst plenty has changed over the years at Ipswich however even today some of the originality of the former GER still largely remains intact even to this day.
