My Via Francigena - Canterbury to Rome

- The summer of 2022 I did the Via Francigena by foot. I must admit that I took a train from Vercelli to Fidenza due to a time crunch. Other than that, I walked the whole thing - mostly alone, carrying everything in my backpack and wild camping. And it was the best thing ever.
V létě 2022 jsem šla poutní stezku Via Francigena. Musím se přiznat, že z Vercelli do Fidenzy jsem to vzala vlakem, protože jsem byla v časovém presu. Jinak jsem to ušla celé - většinou jsem šla sama, všechny věci jsem si tahala v krosně a spala jsem na divoko. A byla to ta nejlepší věc na světě.
🙏 thank you God from..you..ježíš..to je krásný.. a upřímný...jen jeden dotaz..tak jak si došla do..no ono se to vyslovuje divně..jo promiň mé jméno Vera s tím velkým problémem o jménech..hm..když jsi byla ještě v Čechách už na cestě jsme se potkali...tak se ptám jak se ti šlo ..tenkrát jsem si říkala že jsi si nevybrala moc dobrý čas ale ty na to že ti to nevadí..já na to tak fajn.. a ptala jsem se taky na cestu tvou odpovědí byla Francigena... což o to já šla tu poutnickou tedy do Santiaga...když už na to byl čas ..docela by mne zajímalo jestli tě ta buřina tenkrát zastihla v při hraničí.. já koukala na aladina a jen ta předzvěst vypadala divoce tak jsem vysílala co se dalo aby jsi to měla v klidu ...😅 díky bůh že se to stočilo jinam... tak asi jako mé kroky když tvé zprávy...když ti povím že jsem zatáčela podle toho kde mne zastihla nově příchozí zpráva..věř že jsem se ne nudila...😂😊.. je možné že jsem někde šla i dokolečka ...

Hey Hedvika! Great video, I am preparing to do part of it this September. I read that wild camping is not allowed along the way. Have you ever had any issue with that? How did you manage it? Thanks!
Hi, thank you so much!
I mostly wild camped. I found France to be the easiest to find places to camp, Italy the hardest because of the density of population. My advice would be: camp in the nature or in hidden places where as few people will see you/meet you as possible. Don´t make any mess, be gentle to the area you camp in. Leave it looking untouched if you can. I never had a problem with a person, people are understanding as long as you are respectful to them in return. Some days it´s more difficult to find places to camp than others, but it always somehow worked out in the end. Plus sometimes people might take you into their house if they see you are looking for a place to sleep, that happened to me a few times too. :)

@RockinforRock I would say around 10euros per day. Depends on your eating preferences (what kinds of foods you buy and how much you eat).

I had a power bank plus I also carried a solar charger. And I used every opportunity to charge my phone. I think it depends whether you value having lighter backpack or knowing that you will never run out of battery. Because I think the power bank in conjunction with the solar charger weighted around 1kg.

Hi! I guess it depends on the breach you have. Another thing to take into consideration is that many accomodations might not allow a dog into the house. So if you don´t plan on camping in the wild, look into accomodation and if they allow dogs.
Witch part became very hot? What time of the year you did the trail? What about water fountains?
Water fountains in Italy are very common, I think I didn´t have to ask a person for water in Italy, not even once. The hottest part was the north of Italy but I was there during early July I think. But most of Italy was very hot. I walked from 29th of May till 6th of August. :)

I want to do wild camping and my own food at via Francigena. Planning to be the month of October in Rome and walk de Via Francigena the month of August or September. How was the experience for you? From where to where you did walk?
Hi! I walked from Canterbury to Rome (I skipped part in north Italy, around 150km and did that via train). Both wild camping and carrying my own food was great as it allows you to be free and independent of shops and accommodation. It comes in handy mainly in France. It is easier to have access to food and accommodation in Italy.

How was the weather on the way? Was it not difficult to get drinkable water? How much did you spend approximately for a day if i may ask you?
I have heard there are many donation church for pilgrims accommodations in Italian area, had you stayed some of them some time on your journey?

@@moonfish9798 It took me 70days, but 1 day I spend recovering from heat stroke and I skipped around 150km by taking a train due to a time crunch. I averaged around 25-30k per day I think. In terms of weather - be aware of nasty summer storms, it can be quite dangerous sleeping outside during a heavy storm. But the worst is probably the heat in Italy, I found Italy very tough for that reason. Getting drinkable water is super easy - you either ask people in France nad Switzerland for that or use these public taps in Itay, they are almost everywhere. I spent around 8eur on food per day maximum. Carrying a camper stove and eating oats and rice/couscous with red lentils makes it a lot cheaper. It depends on how much will power you have :D As I was getting closer to Rome i started visiting Italy cafes a lot and enjoyed the coffee. I went to a restaurant for a lunch only once though, that helps keep the cost down. I used accommodation for pilgrims only twice, both times in Switzerland.

How heavy was your big bag? Did you happen to get hurt sometimes with your bag?
Was it easy to find other pilgrims?
Were there a bit harmful insects or animals like snakes or mosquitos? i will start on the 20th of May, i think, almost same time as yours.
Was it easy /hard to catch wifi to use at least once a day?
On Saturdays or Sundays, was it difficult to buy food stuff?

@@moonfish9798 My backpack was quite heavy, fluctuating around 17-22kg. I didn´t have any troubles with that, my body got used to as time and kilometers went by. I didn´t meet many pilgrims, mainly because I wasn´t using accommodation for pilgrims. I met one pilgrim with whom I walked a bit and he camped as well and I´d say we became friends for life. But compared to Santiago there are very few pilgrims. But as you are closer to Rome, there are more pilgrims. But still very few compared to Santiago.
I was woken up by boars (wild pigs) once, that was an experience I will never forget. :D Insects are not dangerous but extremely annoying!
I had my maps downloaded so I didn´t really use/need wifi. So I don´t really know. It might be better in Italy where there is more cities and less nature but I can say for sure.
In France you don´t always come across a shop, so please carry some food with you, at least for three days I´d say. You never know how the situation is gonna be exactly, so be prepared for not being able to buy anything for three days. But they have sometimes these automatic machines from which you can buy pastry. But you never know when you´re gonna come across them. You will have more opportunities to buy food in Italy for sure. On Sundays stores might be closed and usually were, so be aware of that.
Enjoy your pilgrimage! Enjoy every second of it. Believe me, it might become something you will keep coming back to in your head once it passes.
via francigena è affascinante... in italia un altro sentiero bello è "via degli dei" appennino tosco emiliano... ed un altro è il sentiero degli dei nel sorrento positano.
