By adding just one interesting idea to a composition (or any piece of art), you satisfy the critics, the university professors, etc. Once you've done that, you can put as much emotion into the piece as you like and everyone should be happy. I think a band that always does a good job of this is Radiohead - every song has one interesting concept to it (an unusual time signature, or mode, or harmonic technique), and apart from that, it's a normal pop song.
You’ve always been so kind and generous with your free lessons! This is beautiful and well-explained. I’m glad I’ve purchased lessons from you in the past. Merry Christmas, Julian. 🎄🎵
Thank you so much CN S - for your wonderful comment, and for supporting my work financially. I greatly appreciate you allowing me to do this work, and I hope you have a great Christmas! Julian
As always....your talent shines through with the real deal.......systematic and very logical...YET Complicated...I love your Work...have a great Holiday Julian!!!
Wow, it’s the first time I encounter the idea of brain vs heart, and it just opened my eye to elements I was incorporating in my playing without even knowing. It will truly change the way I go about it now that I am aware and can put a name on those lovely contrasts imparted by switching from more sophisticated to more stripped down chords. Thank you!
Beautiful. Really inspiring. Looks easy but still above my ability to play right through and fully understand but I'm trying. Your lessons are fantastic thank yiu
You have some amazing arrangements -- haven't yet mastered your "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" arrangement, which is also beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing your music and your knowledge (in a so clear and detailed way).
Beautifully done. These approaches always remind me how closely jazz and late romantic into modern neo classical harmonization are nearly indistinguishable. Swing and the cuoture of improvisation being the primary distinction, really. Your lesson was nicely paced and edited. Thanks for this! I know it's a lot of work. Would you consider a reharm of "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day"?
Thank you John! It is so nice of you to acknowledge the work. My editor Barret and myself both spent a lot of hours editing this one. I'm really glad you enjoyed the lesson. I agree with your observation - a lot of similarities between these different genres - gradually departing from the strict rules of early classical music, and making dissonance sound more and more normal. Thank you John!
Thanks Julian, such lovely sounds. I'm a noob, but appreciate your explanations of what's going on in that wonderful brain of yours. I did download your sheet music for this piece and love playing it. There were 2 parts in bars 13 and 17 where you repeat 3 chords in succession - and I was wondering if you wanted to change up the chords there a bit, how would you do it? To colour the phrasing a bit more? Thanks again and have a wonderful and blessed Xmas!
Hello Julian, Wonderful video, your way to explain is simply great, thank you very much. Q: which software do you use to write the sheet music? Regards.
I just downloaded it. The fingerings are really helpful for me because piano is not my first instrument. Can you put them in for the left hand as well?
Wonderful tutorial maestro! I follow your videos on instagram as well! This is so precious! I hope you had a merry Christmas! I'm learning this song and I'll upload it in my youtube channel, I've got a couple of perfomances from your arrangements there too, Thank you so much maestro for sharing this love for jazz =) greetings from Peru
Hey... I just watched your ear training video, but i dont have perfect pitch... Just wanted to know if you have perfect pitch cuz i cant hear what notes are beeing played at all
Hi Cindy, I love his playing too - VERY musical and singable, everything he plays. I have not made any tutorials on his style yet, but I will add this suggestion to my list.
Hi Michael, you can certainly recommend / share any of my lessons. Most of my lessons are not for complete beginners - I recommend 5+ years piano playing experience first, and a basic understanding of music theory - the major and minor scale, major and minor chords, in particular. Apart from that - I appreciate you sharing my lessons. Thank you for asking and reaching out.
Hi Lady B, let me know if this works for you: themusicalear.lpages.co/hark-the-herald-angels-sing-sheet-music/ If not, using a different browser might work.
"I want to satisfy the heart and the brain"...don't we all? Beautiful arrangement! Thanks for sharing

Never been a fan of the original. Jazz makes everything better. This has so much more emotion than the original. ;D
Thank you so much Jie, that means a lot.
I haven't tried those VSTs, I'm using Keyscape which I like a lot.
Do you have any future lesson requests?
