MY MISTAKE Moving to Thailand

  • Don't do THIS in Thailand! Learn from my MISTAKES. When I moved to Thailand, Keis told me, Tempus told me - but did I listen...? NOPE! I let my ego run wild and surely enough, it all came back to bite.
Today I speak very candidly about moving to Pattaya, Thailand and the terrible mistakes I made. I discuss binging and spending vs health and budgeting.
I talk about saving money when relocating to Pattaya, Thailand and reveal happened when I let grog get the better of me in downtown Treetown. This may not be an easy watch but I believe it's worth saying should it help others from making the same mistakes. I need to do better - and I will.

Very good and honest video Sam. One thing to always remember, when you go overseas you should open your heart and open your mind, without any preconceived notions and ideas that you bring from your home country, to your new countries realities. Always remember that you are a guest in their country and you are at their mercy. Main rule, never do anything thing that’ll make a Thai person lose face, it’s disrespectful.

As a Thai, I appreciate your honesty. We all make mistakes but we learn from it. We( Thais)'d rather have foreigners who are real and own their mistakes than those who think they are more superior than we are, and disrespect us and our culture in our country. Welcome to Thailand!

Everything Adam told you is solid advice. Listen to him. And as far as you making 3 poor decisions during interactions I say congratulations because you learned valuable lessons and made ammends for it. None of us are perfect. You're lucky because if you get into it drunk or angry with the wrong guy here or any country you could end up dead. You got this. Keep going. A few bumps and the road will be smoother.

Hey Sam, I highly recommend getting into some kind of activity/fitness routine. It's what mentally gets me through my rat race office job. No gym needed, walk/bike/run/skateboard/pushups/squats/whatever floats your boat and gets your blood pumping and muscles firing. It's free, gives you routine and purpose, makes you healthier, takes up a little portion of the day where you could be worrying or drinking, and the routine and discipline is respected by others. Also those endorphins! It's like free drugs bro, you feel good physically and mentally when you're done and you know you can do it again the next day. Cheers mate! Love your content!

living in Jomtien you have a great beach walkway to get out and cool off your hot head each day by going for a long walk.. you can do two a day, one early in the morning and one at night. I lost 25lbs by doing that in December and January. now I go to the gym every morning to start my day. Shopping at the markets will save money, get a rice cooker, meats at Big c or lotus. develop a daily schedule. you will get back on budget in no time.

Head up, man. We all make mistakes especially when drinking and carrying baggage with us. I made plenty of similar mistakes when I lived in Indo in 1996 - most linked to alcohol and letting Western emotions get the better of me. Asia is very different. Rather than despair and fight it, suck in the air, open your eyes, learn to breathe the air and take in all that is around you. There's a lot going on in Asia and the people are great!

You sound real in this video brother. Remember we all make mistakes and you going to apologize shows that you are humble and learn from your mistakes.
I’m a new sub and also, random question. You mentioned that you gave the girls at the bar “artwork” what exactly do you mean by that? Are you an artist? If so, I am a digital artist myself.

Good luck, and best wishes. I'll keep wathcing.

I went to many countries, when I was in The Navy, and I learned (usually the hard way) valuable lessons about being successful when in foreign places - be VERY open minded, be VERY patient,
do NOT expect anything to work as well as in your home country, do NOT be defensive in your dealings with the locals (but do be cautious in extending trust) and do NOT get drunk, because all
of the other "ways" you need to be are (usually) disabled (by booze), and you fail miserably. I'm "semi-retiring" in The Philippines 4/2024, and I'm preparing well for this, and thankfully, I've spent
a lot of time there in the past, so "culture shock" isn't really an issue, as I know what to expect, and I'll have A LOT of savings and income, so money won't ever be a problem. The right attitudes
and preparation are the key to success.

Respect. When your actions don't match the words you say, life gets hella stressful bro. It's kinda like you can't even do what you said you were gonna do so you start second guessing and losing trust in yourself. Then every time life slaps you back to reality and you say those same words about changing for the better and doing the right thing, they become meaningless and hold less and less weight and everything feels foreign and foggy. And once you step back and take in the view, you realise the cycle continues to loop on different levels throughout your life over and over and over. Starting again, taking on small challenges like waking up on time, making your bed in the morning, eating breakfast and following through, you start believing in yourself again and the confidence and competence starts growing again, and all of a sudden life's looking up, and you feel capable of tackling those big things again. I'm only saying this because i've been there/done that, and from what you've shared so far I see a lot of similarities. It's all love, bro. We're all gonna make it 🤙🏽

What you did was 100% the right thing to do just treat everyone with respect if you don't get it back no big deal.
Living in Pattaya is going to be a little bit harder I think than say Hau hin where I live as it not known for its party lifestyle.
If your a drinker then you will struggle living there and I'd even consider somewhere not so crazy.

When you focus more on how to help one person (even in small ways) love will find you. Some of us have been burnt in life because our job was helping others but God wants us to turn that job into a passion to help the one (shepherd leaves the 99 to go after the one). Self awareness & never lying to ourselves is critical, as you realized. I believe it's a common process for western men to figure out in Asia. Something that I did, that most men will 'eye roll' about is starting a meditation practice, starting with 5 minutes & working up. Calming my Monkey Mind, working on being grateful for the friends and loved ones who put up with me, being alive and healthy, cause we forget it's all temporary. Find a Yoga class, language class, art class, whatever it is that you define as your 'Safe Activity' also been through the PTSD thing, it's brutal being hyper aware for threats 24/7. Anyway, love your content, thanks for sharing, and looking forward to watching your successful transition.

Some of the soundest advice I've heard. I admire your honesty. We always keep security sweet with drinks, fruit and snacks at least once week. You just never know. Good luck

Great video - I've learned in life if you are respectful and smile, make an effort to try to do a good deed each day if only opening a door for someone or when doing a big shop and you let that person with a couple of items go in front of you their reaction makes you feel better than any bottle of Leo could!

Dude. Being a nice person and putting good energy out there to others will always pay you back in dividends. The younger you learn that lesson, the happier and more at peace your life will be.

Sam, your video is awesome and the first Farang video that gets likes and subscribe from me. Appreciate the honesty. The other Farangs always think Thailand owes them everything. Keep up the food work. Really well done.

    Good self awareness Sam.
Well done quitting drinking. Thats the way forward. Give it a month or two and you'll be on top of everything.
It sounds like you need a bit of time to decompress and adjust. Drinking wont help but time will. Relax adjust a bit.
    Be kind to yourself.
    Good video btw. Very authentic.
