"Sparkleberry" was written in 2006 and was given a special mention at the 26th International Composition Competition for Band in Corciano, Italy.
The work consists of two movements. The first movement is a very bright piece, like its title, “Sparkleberry,” a kind of flower native to the United States.
It has no specific theme, but colorful sound fragments are everywhere, making the music brighter. The second movement is completely different from the first movement. This music features solo alto saxophone and tenor saxophone. The atmosphere of the music is darker but danceable. Especially in the middle section, there is a continuing rhythmic pattern by vibraphone. It might make you feel the danceable rhythm patterns. It would be nice if the players could enjoy the conversations of each phrase between the instruments.
