Pre-soaking hard and large seeds is what my great-great-grandmother, grand-parents, and my dad always did. I do it too. I even pre-soak my winter squash seeds, but those for only a hour or two. I gain about 3 to 4 days germination. Short growing season here in zone 4a. This is a very good video. Big thumbs up!
Great tips! BTW, your wall behind you is begging for a M.I. Gardener logo and your quote "Grow Big or Go Home!" Thanks for your great attitude and enthusiasm - it's infectious!
Quebec Homestead farmer soaks her carrot seeds and then mixedsthem with cooled 2T cornstarch :1 cup water ratio gel to keep them moist. She puts barely germinated carrot seeds into cornstarch-water gel mixture into a bag, cuts off a corner so it is like a pastry-icing bag and gently squirts the seed-cornstarch gel mix into the row. The name of the video is "Sowing Carrots in Cornstarch for great germination no thinning and prevent seed waste". Your videos are very helpful due to your experience, sense of experimentation, encouragement and generosity in sharing your knowledge. Thank you and God bless you and your family.
Last spring, I tried presoaking some of my seeds in homemade BOSS lactobacillus serum and had not only 100 percent germination but stronger growth with less inputs throughout the season. Over the winter, I've added the BOSS to my ongoing anaerobic garbage can composter that I keep in the garage. It's made compost in half the time as in the past without it and it's the freshest, sweetest smelling compost I've ever produced.
I'm definately trying this. Old trick from my mother is to put dried egg shells in the base of the plant pot then the soil, when growing tomatoes from seed - have to say, the difference is incredible. :)
The inspiration and information from your channel is going to have me growing a jungle garden in my yard 🤣 BUT......that’s just fine with me ❤️🌱🧤 Thank you Luke
Thanks. this is helpful. I often have seeds that are almost impossibe to germinate. I'll tree for weeks, and get nothing. Then I'll toss the soil out, and they they will germinate.
Some hot peppers take an extremely long time to germinate so it may not be called pre “soaking” but I always pre germinate my peppers on wet paper towel in a covered container.
I've always used wet paper towels to soak pepper seeds, 3-4 days is all it takes for a sprout. Whether it's a jalapeno, hab, ghost, scorp or a reaper. It will take longer for hot pepper plants to mature but they all germinate in a similar timeline in my own personal experience.
Try planting a dry seed and water it in heavily with a 3% peroxide solution and mist with the same solution. You should find your germination time improves. But you're right, the hotter they are, the longer they take it seems, my chocolate bhutlah peppers took forever to germinate.
Hi Luke, I did learn something new, thank you! I'd love a 'tour' of what seedlings you have growing. My strawberry seeds just started germinating and I'm so excited!
Congratulations! I've been waiting for a very long time, and nothing is happening with my strawberry seeds. I'm not ready to give up because they were the expensive Proven Winners variety. 😥

I had trouble with ‘helmet head’ on my sproutling tomatoes and pre-soaking for a few hours prior to planting seemed to fix the problem. I think the extra moisture makes it easier for the first greens to escape the seed husk.

Love the content. I ordered some tomato seeds dated back to 1950. I know it’s a slim chance that they will germinate. I’ve tried several different ways to germinate these seeds but no luck. I still have about half a pack left. Do you have any tips on germinating 70yr old tomato seeds? Thanks
I would soak them for 6 hrs rinse with a cap full of 3% hydrogen peroxide that's been diluted into a 16 oz water bottle, then plant 1/8" deep into fresh seed starting mix, in full sun. Keep moist! But don't do this until day time temps are in the 70's -80's. If it's below 60 at night, bring them in. They need every trick in the book to have a chance
Hi Luke. Thank you as always. Can you tell me, how does this pre-soaking process work alongside (or in replace of) that technique I sometimes use of "putting the seeds on moist paper towel in ziplock bag?" You showed this a few years ago and I use it. Which seeds would work better that way? And which this way? And do I use both techniques at once? Thank you. Idk about the "seeds that float" are not viable myth, i feel like the times i have tested this it's been inconclusive, and i have definitely germinated seeds that float... maybe it more matters for vegetable seeds, i can clearly recall soaking morning glory seeds and they all floated and they all germinated.
I ordered seeds and the instructions said to "nick or file" them before pre-soaking. What exactly does that mean and is it truly necessary? These instructions were in regard to butterfly pea seeds. Also, will it hurt to let them soak longer than 24 hours or after they've already doubled in size?
'Nick or file' them means you use some 100 or 200 grit sandpaper or similar to very slightly rough up the surface. This makes it easier for water to penetrate into the seed and start germination. Seeds will not survive extended periods without oxygen. I've seen an experiment where someone tried tomato seeds with soaking times from 0-5 days. All groups had some germination, but it was almost flat for 0-4 days, meaning soaking had no effect on that particular tomato seed, until it reached 5 days and germination got worse.
