In the United States, the best-known version of the song was recorded by Nat King Cole on February 6, 1951 and released by Capitol Records as catalog number 1449. It was a million-selling record and reached the number one position on the Billboard chart, staying there for five weeks and altogether on the Best Seller chart for 29 weeks. Billboard ranked this version as the number one song of 1951. Cole described this song as one of his three favorites among his own songs. Several contemporary versions were also recorded, making the charts but not as high.

"I Will Wait for You" is the English version of "Je ne pourrai jamais vivre sans toi", a song from the French musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, 1964). Its music was composed by Michel Legrand and the original lyrics were written by Jacques Demy. It was performed in the film by Catherine Deneuve, whose voice was dubbed by Danielle Licari. The English lyrics of the song were written by Norman Gimbel. This version was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song at the 38th Academy Awards held in 1966.

Le film musical germano-français Les Parapluies de Cherbourg écrit et réalisé par Jacques Demy, est sorti en 1964. C'est le premier des deux films entièrement chantés de Jacques Demy, précédant Une chambre en ville (1982).Il associe d'une part des partis pris irréalistes totalement assumés d'un film « en-chanté » (dialogues intégralement chantés sur la musique de Michel Legrand, décors aux couleurs saturées accordées aux tenues des personnages) ; d'autre part un souci de rendre compte des réalités économiques, sociales et politiques notamment en datant précisément les parties du film. C'est un des premiers et rares films français à évoquer la guerre d'Algérie.Lauréat du prix Louis-Delluc en 1963, récompensé par une Palme d'or au festival de Cannes de 1964, le film a connu un immense succès critique et populaire, une carrière internationale, des adaptations théâtrales, entre autres à New York et Paris, mais aussi des critiques contre certains choix esthétiques.Le film offre son premier grand rôle à Catherine Deneuve, et va lancer définitivement sa carrière. Elle confiera plus tard qu'elle n'était pas sûre de vouloir faire du cinéma jusqu'à sa rencontre avec Jacques Demy pour le film, qui en fera sa muse.
