- Will It Rally? This new web series from The Team O'Neil Rally School asks the only car question that really matters: Will it Rally? Ride along as we test the limits of different vehicles on our skidpad and slalom areas, before putting them against the stopwatch on a mountainous rally stage here at Team O'Neil.
In this episode, we're driving a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon on a beautiful winter day at Team O'Neil HQ in Dalton New Hampshire. base, with decent and short gears. Oh also don’t forget live axels all around
The only real saving graces are the tires and locker. Otherwise it’s ALL meant for off-roading under 10-15 mph which seriously compromises any sort of fast rally handling
Most sedans of the same size are about 3500 lb compared to the probably 4500-5000 of the jeep. And don’t forget the electronic nannies which fuck everything up when you really want to get sideways and do it controlled (which they thankfully disabled)
I bet this thing was TERRIFYINGLY unstable and wanted to wander EVERYWHERE

Summer tires, I would say it's like driving on ice if he wasn't literally driving on ice.
One idea that came to my mind: could you put a forward facing camera to the roof or the bumper, so we could get a feeling of what's actually happening while you drive around? Just put the video in a corner, so it won't take much space from the regular content.

Yup, could do a Picture-in-Picture of the outside view in a corner of the screen?
The more different camera views, the better
Probably wouldn't hurt to use half the screen for each.
Can also be uploaded a separate video. Just the driving with no cuts, maybe split the screen into 4 quadrants to show p.o.v. from different cameras
Will it rally? Yes. Should you ever consider it for that purpose. No.

@@MAXQ14 I think that's what he's getting at. The school car is a great benchmark for normal cars, for sure, but next level would be an actual Rally car in race form. That'd be top notch.

They've mentioned in the past that they're limited to vehicles in their stable but will use private vehicles submitted by their owners. The vehicles will have to have the usual basic safety equipment like seat belts, tires with usable tread, no salvage titles with structural damage, etc. Do you know anyone with one of the vehicles you've mentioned that would be able to drive it out to Team O'Neill for a day of filming?

Thank you for braving the Wrangler on course! Great explanation on why a solid front axle vehicle isn't great for this kind of driving. I get a lot of questions from locals asking about running their older solid axle pickup trucks are rallycross.
I'd like to see the new Ford Bronco when it comes out. Or maybe a 2019 ranger now.

I have a '17 Rubicon and it surely is not fast, nope, never. But with 8" of snow on unplowed streets it is very fun and predicable to slide around corners sideways. Sparks so much joy in my heart.

I'd love to see these laps uncut in a forward facing cam with a foot cam overlaid in the corner with Wyatt's voiceover. The production of this series, and your channel's video content overall, is fantastic, but I would watch the hell of a 3 minute narrated lap.
That Jeep looks like a pig, but so graceful through the snow! Wyatt's commentary on the lap is great as always, but he was not having an easy time..."3rd gear....nope, back down to 2nd", lol! Loving this series! :D
Would love to see you spank some more cheap econoboxes around the stage too...maybe the cheapest car in North America, i.e. the Mitsubishi Mirage...? Would be interesting to see what the cheapest new car you can get would do!

The best things to do with Jeep Wranglers is to wire a kill switch that disconnects the gyro sensors which then disables the ABS and the traction control or to pay for something like a taser JL which allows you to lock the diffs and turn off stability control completely whenever you want.
Will it Rally? Absolutely not. .... wellllllllll, unless you're Wyatt, then absolutely.
Lol first vehicle where you weren't completely relaxed while sliding around but you still did it. Bad ass.
I know this series is for street cars, but I think it would actually be hilarious to see an ultra4 truck doing this. Especially one of the stock class/4600 trucks.

I think this is the most wide eyed I’ve seen him drive
You can disable both stability and traction control by holding the traction control button for 5 seconds (aka "full off"). Although it will automatically go to "partial off" if you take the vehicle over a threshold speed (which isn't specified in the manual). If the vehicle has off-road+ button this will disable threshold speed, but off-road+ is only available in 4WD Hi and Lo. Off-road+ mode work differently for 4WD Hi and 4WD Lo.
I'm really curious how this should go in the summer on gravel. I'm guessing a 4runner would have been better

4runners have independent front suspension meaning its better for stuff like rally but the Jeep is better for articulation and extreme offroad situations.

No it's not a WRX with studded tires... but it's still capable and definitely one of the coolest looking vehicles flying through the woods with some speed. Good driving, especially this big of a vehicle.

I’d definitely 4 link with a wats link in the rear and keep it at stock height or of lifted no more than 2” and DEFINITELY long arm the front with modified twisted arms so the camber change and bump steer isn’t nearly as terrible
Not much you can really do about the scrubbing tho
A late model ranger with A arms up front would be much more suited
Not even getting into fragility concerns and driveline bind with TTB

I really enjoyed the Dodge Charger video. I would like to see a Crown Victoria Police Interceptor on here. Seriously underpowered for the weight but would make for some good video. Make sure the limited slip diff is still good lol.
Y'all need to either set a time that the vehicles have to beat in order to say that they WILL rally. Or, change the name of the segment to "HOW does It Rally?".

Great video! How about testing an AEV equipped Hemi JK Wrangler.
I rented these so want to have a blast in a new Rubicon, go rent one at southern Utah adventure Center and pull the fuses, take it to the sand dunes close by. 200 buck for all day. Be sorta careful they will break. And make sure to put the fuse back. Also if you break anything expect to pay for it. Includes ruining a tire or scuffing the wheels

FYI you'll have to take this jeep to someone with a dealer scan tool to reset the ABS system after unplugging it, it isn't a plug n play sort of system.

We put it back together and everything is fine so far... The check engine light was on for a couple run cycles, but it turned itself off.
2:34 I’d like to see you try the 2 door at some point. It’s a bit faster with the weight savings and turning off road in it would be interesting to see since its radius is so small.

On a JK you could shut off traction control by pressing and holding the ESC button for something like 6 seconds in 4hi. The dash should then flash “ESC Off”. Maybe works the same on the JL?
