GF2 was my first camera and I have bought and sold so many since then but kept my OG GF2. Now I find myself shooting with it again for the nostalgia and realizing it wasn’t as limiting as I thought it was when I “upgraded” from the GF2 all those years ago.
Hi Robin, I bought a white GF2 for a friend earlier this year for $70 USD. It was in mint condition and came with the box, paperwork and accessories. I also gave her my silver Lumix 12-32mm pancake lens. It's a nice looking compact system which produces nice photos in good light. I do prefer Olympus colors and I also noticed the shutter was a little loud. I have shot it a few times and think it is a very good beginner's camera. Thanks for the video
I had a GF2 and GF1 and the latter was even louder. These cameras were so loud to the point I couldn't shoot street with them, as everyone around me would just turn their heads towards the sound. Both cameras were shutter shock hell! Loved the colors out of these early 12mp Panasonics though, and the Dynamic Monochrome picture profile was one of the best monochrome jpeg profiles I've ever seen.
I bought a like new GF3 for around 70 USD on MPB earlier this year. I was happy to pay that considering the digicams from the early 2000s were starting to fetch those prices, but their lenses are not removable. So for a digicam-sized M43 camera that I can change lenses with, it's a winner! No regrets
Amazing bargain! I still have a silver GF2. I remember the software CD came with Silkypix for editing RAWS. Great photos Robin, shows how the camera can still take good photos!
About two years ago I paid $60 for a mint GF2 with a 20/1.7 attached to it, and this was in California. Being an Olympus guy, and not liking Lumix jpegs, I never tried the body… until today after watching your video, Robin. Well, I have to admit it: the rendering of raw files is incredible, even by 2024 standards. I’m truly impressed. I have not tried the jpegs, and the menus are not my favorite, but I’m blown away by the raw files. Thanks Robin!
No way! I picked up one of these last year for $20. I'm still an olympus fan for M4/3, but for the price I couldn't resist it. Thanks for another get video Robin!
Got a GF3 on order, so appreciated this. Sorry to say, due to somebody trying to grab my camera, I decided I needed a small/cheap body for shutter therapy. The adventures must continue!
Wow this is my first interchangeable lens camera. I didn't know why people love the colors now. It was critisized a lot back then and always compared to olympus E-P1 & E-P2. I love this camera, and bring it often, even when I have GX85.
Thanks for these new set of images. Very impressive considering it is not “fun” like the S9 😉. I really like the image at 5:05, a very nice portrait indeed. Long life to MFT!
For those of you saying "but we cannot find such camera at such price at such locations' well, it all depends on luck, does it not? Sometimes you are lucky, you can find a Leica M6 in a garage sale for 100 dollars.
I got some cameras and lenses with very low price too, some people have no idea what they are selling. Or they simply want to get rid of those things as fast as possible. Recently I bought Pentax K10D with Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 and Tamron 80-210 for about $75 equivallent, all packed in camera bag including batteries and some filter. But just that Sigma lens alone has value around $150 :D I also had luck with some M42 lenses in past and then with mirrorless wave coming their price increased several times as people realized that they can easily adapt them and enjoy fast sharp MF 135/2.8 with nice bokeh for example. But what used to be $30 is now $200+
I found a E-M1 Mark III in pristine condition with only like 8000 shutter actuations for like 700 USD, and a Nikon Z6, also pristine condition, with only around 7000 shutter actuations at also slightly under 800 USD. Yes, those are not 10 USD, but I still consider myself lucky for those bargains (their condition is really like new).
I got an E-pl7 for £25. Which is to say, it made me £25. Spent £150 on a "broken" E-pl7 with kit electronic zoom and 40-150mm. Sold the lenses for £175 in total, and the camera worked after exercising the shutter a bit. Gotta know what to look for.
I have a GF3 that I use occasionally. I have a 14mm pancake lens on it and don't find the lack of stabilization to be a problem. I do use my Olympus E-M5 more often.
I have the slightly older GF1 (well, older in comparison to this one... quite old compared to modern standards) but I do agree that these shoot some nice colors and the image quality is not that bad, even compared to a more modern-ish camera). Actually got it for about $20 with 2 batteries (but no charger, and one reason I got it so cheap). Plus the used camera clerk couldn't figure out how to check the shutter count so they were going to just throw it in the "cheap" bin. I actually figured out how to check it and only 1100 shots on it. It's like new except for one minor scratch on the body. But shoots great pictures and well worth the $20 (I did have to buy a charge for it and got a third battery for another $20 on Amazon but for $40 total have a nice little camera. I did have to buy a lens though, so I found a used 12-32 for about $90 on MPB. But it's my day to day EDC camera now (as I shoot FF, sometime I just don't want to carry around a 3 lb camera setup). H ave been contemplating getting either a 17mm or 25mm prime.
Tell that to a lot of people who said I was exaggerating on my video title. And you had a spare battery, which costs more than 10 dollars! Either 17mm or 25mm, you won't go wrong, both are good lenses.
Wow, love those colours Robin! What a great buy, and at that price you could give it to a child to begin their photographic journey without worrying unduly about it getting damaged. The combination of your composition skills, the photogenic light in Malaysia and your CaptureOne processing always seems to produce fantastic photos, with great clarity and colours. I know you are undecided about whether to publish a video on your post processing methods, but I for one would love to find to find out how the photo magic happens!
Thanks for the kind words. The thing about my post-processing video - people will be disappointed, there is nothing much to share, I did not do anything special, all the adjustments were very minor
Hi Robin, this Lumix Camera looks in great condition like it's brand new. Loved the colours of the Fruit and vegetables, and the Cat looked very sharp and you can see the eyes very clear. I liked the Buildings and the colour of the Sky. This was another fun video, thanks Robin 😊
My first question was what is a Gf2? The small 12-32 would have been a great lens too for this camera (and it has some stabilization). Your photos looked great…combo of nice camera and talent! Btw enjoyed your recent collaboration with Rob Trek!
A few cups of coffee? I think in some countries a single cup of coffee is costs already more than that, so impressive find! Wish I could find such deals.
I got similar impressions from E-P2: pleasant colours without any manipulations, also BW OOC jpegs are very nice, and the grain on high ISOs aren't distracting. And the body is really comfy for my large hands. Yet, really LOUD shutter - the same con you get with GF2 :) P.S. speaking of the impressions, still like my both E-500 and E-420: just revisiting my old 43 setup, and it's kind of healing experience
Older micro four thirds cameras are such a good bargain. It's unbelievable. I still enjoy using my trusty GF1! I should pickup an EP-1 for old times sake :D
I own One as second cheap everyday camera. For me, the two bug downsides of it are the loud Shutter sound and the auto ISO that can only be set until 1200, although you can manually set it to Higher vales. This means that if you really in auto ISO you Will get blurry images on les Bright scenarios as it Will force slow Shutter speeds.
Hi Robin, love all your videos. You have a unique ability to cut to the chase and make high end photography available to all of us wannabe Ansel Adams. p.s. what brand is your wrist strap; I can't make it out. Thanks again, and keep on shooting!
$10? Oh nice!! That is good price for any functional camera. And great for homegamers and beginners. Missing IBIS is sad. Those 12Mpix are enough for most use. People were shooting hi-end pro jobs with 12mpix EOS5D and D700 for ages :)
The GF2 may have 12MP but the output from that sensor isn't the same as the 12MP 5D and D700 cameras. You can still see a huge gap. The gap closes when Olympus launched the E-M5/E-M1, with better AF and overall reliability. The GF2's AF is also too slow to do anything serious.
GF1, GF2 and GX1 - best Pana MFTs EVER !!! BTW: 10 US$ for a GF2?? OMG... Bought some months ago a GX1 (broke the LCD of my GF2) for over 120 EUR. Worth every penny - so much fun. PS: Pana PZ 14-42 and PZ 45-175 are insane good lenses for those bodies. And: those Pana lenses render greens different then Olmpus lenses.
If you think about it, 2011 was really around the heyday of photography. Camera sales were booming. I even went on a few photography trips that were organised by a regular operator. And micro 4/3 did very well to ride that wave. Even in 2015 or so, I recommended a colleague to look at it instead of buying a DSLR. I think he got an Olympus camera eventually. Makes me a bit sad that it's gone downhill from there.
I own a GF3, GF6 and GH9II, I was a huge Olympus guy but not convinced, and less and less convinced by OM System, just remakes of Olympus Cameras with a few added gimmicks. Last year when I decided to replace my venerable OMD1mkII, I decided to move to Panasonic. To be honest, I still have my Olympus E3, OMD5II and OMD1II and I still prefer the OMD1II when I use adapted lenses from FT or EF, the OMD1 is more "tolerant" to adaptations than the Panasonic.
@@robinwong I hope so but more and more pessimistic. The TG-7 is just a rebranded TG-6 that was just a upgraded TG-5, the OM1II is just an OM1 with more RAM and better software, and the OM1 was just an OMD-1III with a few features from the OMD1X. The new lenses are cool but are just those already in Olympus' basket, ready to be launched, same for the OM5 and the PEN. They are still great cameras, but not game changer as Olympus cameras were before as the Pen from the 60s, the OM-1 in the 70s, the OM-4 in the 80s, E series in the early 00s with weather sealing/IBIS and finally mirrorless in the early 10s, OM System doesn't improve, it just continues the lineage. And on top of that, their prices are crazy for cameras with 5 years old specs.
Great colors, I assume these were shot in RAW. Were any of the samples straight out of camera jpegs? Did you use ISO 200 generally for flexibility in different lighting conditions or to avoid blown highlights?
Funny because mine that i bought in 2012 has always had a green colour cast on camera jpgs, especially on skin. My Gh1 and Gh2 have the same green cast. RAW images i can manipulate to pleasing results, but im not a big fan of RAW. The reason i bought these 3 cameras over 10 years ago was for the video bitrate hack, i shot hundreds of event videos with a GH1 in a waterproof housing all from the back of a jetski on the ocean as my shooting platform. But i never used any of them for still images. I still have all 3 fully functioning cameras and all 3 still have the video bitrate hack applied.
Robin, love the channel! These are still $100+ on Ebay so yes, you stole it. I have a Lumix GF5 and, in many ways, love it. As you know, most Lumix lenses have the Mega OIS built in so no IBS is not really an issue. If you want a real "pocket powerhouse", put the Olympus 17MM F2.8 pancake on that GF2. Tiny package and gives some amazing results! Lastly, Panasonic colors are indeed cool, but Olympus colors were always way too warm for my taste, almost orange. Thanks again, great work!
Warmth has to do with your white balance settings, nothing to do with color profile or how the camera renders colors. Just tweak your white balance to your liking. There are some color traits in Lumix newer cameras that cannot be fixed easily - even shooting in daylight. That is a problem.
still using my Lumix GX1 and it's great for A4 prints and some 1080P video. I rather spend my money on a flight ticket, then buy a new camera. Panasonic please give us a 12MP GX-10. The biggest advantage for this kind of cameras is the ability to hand them over to kids in the family .. they love the shutter sound and it's a lot of fun for 10$.
I have the GF3 and i love the camera its cheap i bought it for RM250 with damage touch screen...but I've been thinking to buy lumix g85 as outdoor camera....what do you think Robin?
@@robinwong update : the lumix g85 got sold to someone else...but been working and saving money to buy em10 mk3 with broken touch screen for 900 ringgit.....is em10 m3 a good camera in your opinion?
One thing that I really wish was built-in GPS in M43 cameras, so every photo I took would automatically have geotag, and it would be much easier to sort them when upload to google or apple albums. Costs maybe $5 to add that...
I skipped the gf2 as it wasn't much of an upgrade over the GF1 got me addicted to the tilting EVF :D pana 14-45 kit lens or pana 20mm could get quite astonishing results
Some quick googling from reviews back in the day suggests "Rumour says that Panasonic makes the sensor chip used in both Panasonic and Olympus cameras". Wish Lumix would have stuck with whatever approach was giving them good colors until this point .. !
@@robinwong thanks Robin!! I ask, because in a lot of videos, they review the camera and show photos hardly edited, and we don't see how these photos came... Personally I like shoot jpegs, and I adjust before taking a photo, a little contrast or saturation... I love your videos, and your reviews!! 😎👍
No, image stabilization should be built INTO the camera and then it can stabilize ANY lenses you mount on it, not the other way around. Panasonic is slowly learning and catching up on this mistake. Their newer bodies follow what Olympus did more than 10 years ago - include 5-Axis IS in body.
Comparing with a DSLR makes no sense, as they had mirror mechanism, which was absent in mirrorless cameras. I have not heard anything LOUDER than GF2 in the Micro Four Thirds system yet.
Disagreeing with me about something or having different opinion is perfectly fine. But to ACCUSE me of lying in my video, this I cannot accept. I have 100% foolproof evidence I used only ONE lens, the Olympus 25mm F1.8 to capture ALL the images shown in the video. I even have a witness. What did you have to come and claim that I have lied to my audience? That is a very serious allegation and I do not take this lightly.
@@robinwong I"m sorry, I didn't mean to accuse you. Maybe the problem is that the lens is a real 25 mm, and I took it like a "25 mm equivalent", maybe you showed the camera with a zoom lens attached, or maybe the images are cropped, because they don't look like taken with a short lens. Anyway, I'm sorry...
Robin, no matter which camera you use, your photos are always great.
Here you can see that the camera you use has hardly any influence.
Thanks, you are too kind!

I did not notice any green cast at all, both JPEG and RAW.
Enjoyed this. Nice reminder that taking photos is the best therapy! Q: what's the wrist strap you're using? Have seen it in other videos.
haha i brought this camera with me when i visited malaysia in 2016 👍🏻
Robin, love the channel!
@@robinwong Thank you. I was comparing my Oly E-PL1 and E-PL6 to the Lumix's that I've had, all on AWB - very different animals.
still using my Lumix GX1 and it's great for A4 prints and some 1080P video. I rather spend my money on a flight ticket, then buy a new camera. Panasonic please give us a 12MP GX-10. The biggest advantage for this kind of cameras is the ability to hand them over to kids in the family .. they love the shutter sound and it's a lot of fun for 10$.
its always the one behind the lens!
Thanks! Appreciate the kind words
I have the GF3 and i love the camera its cheap i bought it for RM250 with damage touch screen...but I've been thinking to buy lumix g85 as outdoor camera....what do you think Robin?
No idea about a g85, never used it
@@robinwong update : the lumix g85 got sold to someone else...but been working and saving money to buy em10 mk3 with broken touch screen for 900 ringgit.....is em10 m3 a good camera in your opinion?
Old Panasonic Still Revenant
I bought a GH1 for 50usd excluding the lens which is awesome
What a great bargain!
Not gonna lie, I'd absolutely own a GF2 again for $10!
Indeed
Robin could shoot with a pin hole camera and still get better images than me 😁
Thanks, you are too kind!
One thing that I really wish was built-in GPS in M43 cameras, so every photo I took would automatically have geotag, and it would be much easier to sort them when upload to google or apple albums. Costs maybe $5 to add that...
You can sync your camera to your phone and add all the GPS info that you want in newer Wifi capable cameras.
I skipped the gf2 as it wasn't much of an upgrade over the GF1
got me addicted to the tilting EVF :D
pana 14-45 kit lens or pana 20mm could get quite astonishing results
yeah it was not much different from the GF1
Does anyone know why the camera EM 10m II - makes noise when turned on and why you can hear the internal hum of its operation in video, the fan?
It's because the Image Stabilization is on and that's quite normal tho
Some quick googling from reviews back in the day suggests "Rumour says that Panasonic makes the sensor chip used in both Panasonic and Olympus cameras". Wish Lumix would have stuck with whatever approach was giving them good colors until this point .. !
Manufacturing wise they can't beat Sony.
Robin, your photos are edited? Or strait out of câmera?? 🤔
Does it matter? Short answer - 99.999999999999999999999% straight out of camera.
Got mine with 14mm lens for about 35 dollars, no charger and no battery
Yours is a better deal, with a 14mm lens which by itself costs more than 35 dollars already
The lumix GF2 camera body in Vietnam costs $100
I’ll bet a lot of paper weights cost more than $10! 😁✌️👍
In Indonesia Lumix GF9 sell about Rp3.9juta or US$231 😄😄
Of course, GF9 will be priced much higher. GF2, however, was discontinued and in the used market, will be priced much lower.
I don't speak cat so would love to know the info :) Thank you :)
Meow!
@@robinwong LOL
You can use it with a stabilized like te 42mm I have on my gf1 and use it for portraits etc
No, image stabilization should be built INTO the camera and then it can stabilize ANY lenses you mount on it, not the other way around. Panasonic is slowly learning and catching up on this mistake. Their newer bodies follow what Olympus did more than 10 years ago - include 5-Axis IS in body.
Are the Images color corrected?
No.
Annnnnddddd its 100 USD.
Nope. Last I checked, 10
That shuttersound is nothing compared to my Canon eos 1d mark 3. I hardly heared it I was like that is not loud at all. My Canon m6m2 is louder.
Comparing with a DSLR makes no sense, as they had mirror mechanism, which was absent in mirrorless cameras. I have not heard anything LOUDER than GF2 in the Micro Four Thirds system yet.
Whaaat?? I’ve just ordered one for £60! Was I ripped off! lol
Go return it!
Those photos are taken with a collection of lenses, not only the 24 mm...
Thanks @@pcaridadI appreciate that.
good video ,excuse me where are you living?
