- I will show you how to get amazing photos of kingfishers with basic gear. If you are just starting out or don't want to carry all the heavy gear with you, watch this video and learn how to best go about photographing these colorful birds.
I am using Nikon's entry-level camera, the Z 30, together with the Sigma 150-600mm, an affordable lens (at least compared to other lenses) that is very popular amongst wildlife photographers.
I will take you along and explain how to find the appropriate location, how to set up the camera, which settings to use, how to hide yourself, and how to go about photographing them. I will also show you the photos that I take.
Animals seen: Common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), The mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and The nutria (Myocastor coypus).
Gear used in this video:
Camera: amzn.to/44p8rZQ
Lens: amzn.to/45BnPDw
Sound: /
Tripod: Triopo tripod with Triopo gimbal head

Should I make another video, this time with a Z30 and a 70-200 lens and without the camouflage cover? Let me know!
Is that the lowest entry gear u have liked this viedeo and maybe you cold do somthing like a budget camera rewiev for ppl that know 0 about the topic very interesting content and great pictures (sorry for gramma not a native english speaker)
@yveshotting3371 Thank you. There are other camera and lens options, of course, but I will be using what I currently have available: the Z30 and the Sigma 70-200 2.8. As I showed in this video, it's not so much about the gear as it is about the location, the settings that you choose, and the technique. If you have a bit higher or lower-end lens or camera, it doesn't change much. Yes, I plan to do more beginner-oriented videos in the future.
Yes please 🙏
I would like a video with a tighter budget maybe using last gen lens mount bodies.
This was amazing Patrik, it was really nice to see you get these shots with more basic gear, let's see what you can bring us with the 70-200 lens! 📸
I'm happy you've found it useful :) noted, I'm sure it will be a fun challenge.
Great tips! I spotted a kingfisher on our recent trip to Slovakia, hopefully next time I’ll be able to capture a few shots
Thanks :) Oh that's really great to hear. I think they have lots of fish and fishing spots to choose from in that area. Good luck on getting the shots 🤞
Nice and beautiful video. Amazing tips and its too good for the beginners. Big Like and thanks for sharing.
Thanks mate, I appreciate your comment :)
What a cool little video... nice colors, well explained. Thank you! 😀
Thank you Chris 😊 cheers
best video 2023 !!! Greetings from Germany
Thanks! Cheers
a wonderful video and useful for upcoming bird photographers
Thank you, cheers :)
For a person with very little experience and the most basic gear a video like this about one of the prettiest birds in our nature is just so valuable. Thank you. The video concept mentioned at the end sounds exciting too. I'll be looking forward to see it, if you decide to go for it.
Jan, thank you for your comment. Feedback like this really means a lot to me and is invaluable for the future of this channel.
Based on the feedback that I've gotten, I decided to go ahead with the proposed video. It's already in the making :D
Again, thanks mate for your support
The more basic the better for some of us!
Noted. I am already working on a new video on this topic, stay tuned :)
Really liked the simplistic take you took in this video. Makes me wanna go out and shoot birds for sure🐦😁 Great job!
Glad you liked it, Mihai. Well that's a compliment for me, I'm happy to hear that. Cheers :D
At last a vlogger that proves you can be a wildlife photographer without having to remortgage your house to buy expensive cameras, I have the same lens but own the nikon z50 camera, which apart from having a poor battery life is a great camera. Kudos to you my friend and more budget friendly vlogs please
Thank you for the kind comment. I'm glad to hear that my point came across in the video. Everyone can enjoy wildlife photography, even with more beginner gear. It's the approach that matters.
Thanks for the support, and I hope to see you in the other videos as well.
Cheers, Patrik
Patrik, I'm glad I came across your channel. I wish you well as this is a great video, with outstanding images and informative comments. I commend you on a job well done!
Thank you, I appreciate your kind comment :) Have a nice day, cheers
For me, there is nothing more exciting than when a kingfisher appears and ypu are able to photograph it. Be careful though as its addictive and before you know it you're buying chest waders and building perch stands to put out in the water. If i were you I'd be tempted to set up my own perch close to the bank where you're photographing from, looks like thats a regular corner the birds like to fish from, theres so many possibilities I'm very jealous!
Oh definitely! When I hear its calls and, a few seconds later, it lands on the branch, there's nothing better. It tests your patience and readiness as well, because you wait for it for a long time, and when it shows up, you've got maybe 10 or 15 seconds before it moves on. No time to change the settings, haha :)
Yeah, haha, I agree 100%. I am already testing the location for another video, as I noticed that a few times it landed on a perch much closer to me, maybe 2 meters from where I was sitting, and that's a perfect opportunity for some close-ups. Cheers
@@PatrikInNature look forward to seeing the results!
Great tutorial. I only wish we had such colorful birds near me. Thank you Patrik
Thank you! :) yeah I am very lucky that we have them so close to my home
Excellent. Well done young man. Congratulations!
Thank you very much!
Geat video again. You deserve far more subscriber, regards from Serbia!
Thank you very much Srđan :) regards from Slovenia
Was not sure if z30 could really take such beautiful pictures, was contampelating between a6400 , z50 and z30 for wildlife, thanks your video shifts my decision to z30, please suggest your inputs, thanks
Hi there. I can't speak for the a6400, but the Z30, Z50 and Zfc are basically the same camera, just made for different types of users. The Z30 and Z50 are almost exactly the same camera, with the main difference being the viewfinder on the Z50.
I've bought the Z30 for filming myself, so I don't have a need for a viewfinder, but if I were buying it for shooting wildlife, I would go with the Z50 because the viewfinder helps you see the picture even when you are shooting in the bright sun. The second reason is stability. It's much easier to hold the camera steady if you are leaning it against your face, thus adding a third point of contact.
If you have any further questions, I am happy to help :)
Cheers
@@PatrikInNature thank you so much for your prompt and valuable feedback
Anytime :)
Epic footage, Patrick!
Thank you, means a lot :)
Great video as usual mate!
Thanks Duarte :)
Great tips Patrik!
Thanks mate :)
This man proved that nikon z30 has way more potential than calling it a vlogging camera .... plz make more videos of this cameta
True, it's a very capable small camera. Thanks, will do. In the mean time, I have a few more videos on this topic on my channel, if you want to check them out.
Cheers, Patrik
@@PatrikInNature absolutely delighted with your other works
Thank you, it means a lot!
Appreciate your Work ❤
Thank you :)
Great video, great photos 👍. I managed to photograph a Kingfisher using a Nikon D3200 and a 55 to 300 mm lens, along a nearby canal.
Thank you. That's great to hear! 😊 it's possible to get really good photos with any kind of gear if you know how to go about it. Good luck
Saludos desde Cozumel , buen video
Thanks :)
Great video ❤
Thanks, cheers! :)
So amazing videos
Thank you so much 😀.
@@PatrikInNature I'm new support
Welcome :) I also checked out your RUclips channel and you have really nice content
sigma 150-600mm ... which one? Contemporary or Sport
Sport. You can check out the description for all the gear used :)
Patrik
@@PatrikInNature great! i had that one too. sold it when i switched system. well and now i try to get it again used, but everyone just sells their contemporary crap. sport versions are hard to find. its soooo good 😄
Agreed, it's a really good lens, especially for the price, as these big lenses can easily cost 5, 10, 15k. Good luck finding it.
Cheers
Very nice vdo mate😃👍🏼
Thanks 👍
Great video cant wait for more
Thank you! New kingfisher video already in the making 😊
Sir iam focusing on landscape and whild life photography and videography for this purpose which came is best. What about nikon z30 ?
Are you looking at Nikon gear or other brands as well?
Nice video again... what is the location?
Thank you :) it's about 15min drive from Ljubljana towards Vnanje Gorice, Slovenia
What color profile do you use: standard, neutral or portrait? In general, I like Nikon coolers except for the green one, this one looks like green mixed with dirty yellow. I like the green color in canons, it's so delicate, pastel and slightly saturated. I managed to get close to this in my Nikon Z50, but it's still a bit off. The profiles I use are modified because the standard ones do not provide me with the image I want.
Where did you by the camouflage blancket? What model it is? It seems suitable for summer and let the air breathe through it...
I bought it at a Decathlon store. It is made by the brand "Solognac". Yes, it's very light and thin, best for summer weather.
Cheers, Patrik
Did you use adapter?
Yes, the Nikon FTZ adapter.
Thanks for replying@@PatrikInNature
Well, 150-600mm not basic for me :/ But nice video !
It's a lot of money for me as well. With this video, I wanted to show that you don't necessarily need a telephoto lens that costs a couple thousand to get good-looking photos of kingfishers.
If you are interested, I just posted a new video where I use the Z30 and a Sigma 70-200mm, and the photos are maybe even better compared to these shot with 150-600mm.
Very informative video, thank you Patrik. Also, +1 for another kingfisher video with even less gear.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for letting me know.
You can tell a lot about a person’s health by their fingernail beds. You seem to be in great health!! 👍🏻
Oh wow haha, well that's great to hear 🤘
I’m using even more basic equipment, Sigma 100-400mm C and a Canon crop DSLR 77D. Only ever managed to photograph a kingfisher on one occasion at a very long distance and the background was full of branches. Even though it’s not the best I still enjoy looking at it. 😊
That's a very capable kit as well. In the coming months I will share a video where I use the same camera but with a 70-200mm or a 24-70mm lens. It will be a guide/tutorial :) I hope you will like it and find it useful.
Good luck with your photography.
Cheers, Patrik
