  • There are two parts to this video.
    (1) Joan Didion reads "See enough and write it down, I tell myself, ..." in her own voice from the book Slouching Towards Bethlehem (This is a small section from the documentary The Center Will Not Hold)
    (2) Joan Didion's appearances in an interview with Charlie Rose in May 1992 and her talk on life in L.A.

No one will be as cool as Joan Didion - a force of nature, a total badass. Her writing changed my perspectives in so many ways and I'll always be grateful for that. I hope she's now in that place at the bend in the river where cottonwoods grows and where the artificial rain forever falls, reunited with John and Quintana - RIP, Joan!

This reminds me of a line in her book the year of the magic thinking when she was in the hospital after her husband just died the nurse described her as cool costumer which wasn’t very pleasant to her at the time

I still keep her words on writing in mind:
    "Do not whine...
    Do not complain.
    Work harder.
    Sped more time alone."
Still some of the best advice a writer can hear.

What a giant Joan Didion was! I loved how razor-sharp her writing and mind were. Que viva Joan Didion.

This passage blew my mind when I read it. Hearing it in her voice gives me joy.

    A rather misleading video title.

She makes comments at the beginning and the end that refer back to the title, but they are only the thin, white bread to a lot of sandwich filling.

30 years ago she nails it....a disconcerting longing for leadership..."not exactly democratic"

Interesting comments that show how both Democracy and also how the more ultra democratic something can be are the ultimate, unquestioned values.

"The people" can be ultra autocratic too. A Democracy is only as good as each individual person is. And: Goodness is a definite thing. It can be defined and measured. A person is not good automatically as a result of just being a person.

It's fascinating to me how willing and eager people are to announce to the world, "I am totally ignorant." Amazing, really.
