On many Mikrotik devices there is a PoE out port on ether 5, but the WAN port defaults to ether1. Here's a quick tutorial on moving the WAN over to ether5.
Huge, huge thank you for this video! My PoE injector for LTE modem went off today and with the help of your video, I was able to reconnect my LTE modem via the 5th port to Mikrotik router. This port has PoE out so it's all up and running again. Initially, I was thinking about buying a new PoE injector but I managed to change the WAN port to the 5th port with the PoE out in literally 5 minutes.
Awesome. Thank you. I was able to set my eth1 port to LAN and eth5 to WAN since my internet is only 750Mbps. Now I just have to figure out how to get my IP pool set up on a different subnet than the default.
Thanks Greg, it’s a huge help to have these steps done once correctly. A year go I had to do this and found myself getting lost with all of the options available to me. I did get it setup but it took far longer than a few minutes.
Very helpful, Greg - thank you! Would you happen to know, on an hAP ac router, will Router OS support dual WAN interfaces, with auto fail-over? I'm trying to use Ether5 for POE and WAN to connect to a WiFi extender, with a fail-over to Ether1, connected as a WAN port to an LTE modem. I suppose the real question is not can it be done, but could it be done by ME using menu options like the video above, as opposed to creating/uploading code and scripts! Many thanks,
That's great! Is there an easy way like this to have multiple bridged ports on the WAN side? I have accomplished this with a lot of frustration and went pretty far away from "the default configuration" Just for clarity I am not talking dual WAN, I just want to eliminate the need for a dmz switch when you have multiple static IP's with multiple routers. As an example for FiOS set top boxes you need to keep their router attached to get the guide info.
Greg, 4 years later. Is it can be done on RB760iGS. It seems doing so leads to Router switching to pure bridge and failing to start afterwards. Thank you in advance!
Hi got a stupid question, I have secondary WAN (backup, 5G) which requires PoE until now I've used a cheap PoE injector but it recently burnt out, I also have a TPlink TL-SG3210XHP-M2, it provides the 2.5GbE POE+ port I need. can I follow this same tutorial and assign the WAN on the switch to work basically as a native WAN? again I'm sorry if it's a stupid question I'm a complete noob when it comes to networking and just doing this for home setup basically.
So, could I use port that support PoE “power out” to power the ONU, for example? In that case the powering off ONU will be depends on router powering. Is it possible?
This works! But the Interfaces->Interface list setting keeps reverting on it's own back to ether1 (after setting it to ether5 and working fine for a while). Any suggestions? Firmware 6.84.1
hi, i have a question. would you advice a person to buy this compare to a HP or DELL branded switch when it comes to user friendly interfaces? imthinking more in the way of ppl who do not know mutch about how to set up things inside a switch. menny of the mikrotik vids ive seen they mainly do it over console/command when they set it up. dont think price, think more user friendly when it comes to the point.
Thank you, this was (in 2023) very helpful!

Nice one, glad it was helpful

Thanks, very helpful in 2024!
Works and straight to the point. Thank you
Glad it helped
Thanks Greg, love your videos. I know it's only been 6 months but apparently mikrotik has changed how they handle interface lists. Yeah!!! Lol
Thanks, this helped a lot.
Thanks! Good short video!

Thanks So Much Greg!! You are the best..
Harris Kapur always happy to help!

Create a bridge. Add your "WAN" ports to the bridge. Move DHCP config to the bridge/update interface lists with bridge as WAN.

Time for an update video?
Hi. I tried to do this using a map2nD which only has two ports Eth1 and Eth2 (POE) but i could not figure it out. Can you assist?
I managed to do this on map2nD only after upgrading to the latest (6.48) firmware. With the older factory firmware it has't worked.
Hi, 1 of my team mate connected router board hex poe to 220v without its adapter and now it stopped working , can you suggest what to do now?
my router went from router mode to bridge mode after this😂 don't know why
