i feel like people who aren't into drawing/art don't realise how expensive art supplies can get !! my parents were shocked at the price of arches blocks - it's basically like £2 for one sheet of A4 paper
I wasn't into art until mid 2021 and had absolutely no idea. And then the first thing I got into was freaking watercolor. How did I pick such a pricey one for the first?? Lol.
One tip my art teacher gave me, is to buy arches paper by the roll! you could just cut it down to size and its a HUGE roll for a similar price of one pad
I have too many art supplies (I mean didn't stop me for asking for more lol) but one of the big things I did this year is mostly ask for stuff I'm running low on like watercolor paper. Also online drawing/painting classes to boost my skills and force me to use up the stuff I have.
Also for learning watercolor pigments/properties I highly recommend the RUclips Channels; Dr. Oto Kano and Denise's channel, In Liquid Watercolor. Both are super informational. And Dr. Oto Kano has a website where they list ever color/pigment across multiple watercolor brands for easy comparison
As a gift for myself I got a 72 set of premier prisma color pencils for about 40 dollars. I know that isn't much in terms of art supplies, but for my 6 years of doing art, I've mostly used plain old grafite mechanical pencils from Walmart. At first I really regretted it, it's just so much money for colored pencils, but when they arrived I was so happy! I've been getting used to them, and they're so good at blending and they're so buttery.. I'm really glad I splurged, i feel like it will really help me explore using colors in traditional art. Basically, sometimes it works out when you don't think things through! (As long as it's money you can spare that is)
No one would believe me but one day I found an Arches block at Goodwill. I haven't been able to find any art supplies since. I already have everything I technically use, but if I could get anything I would get some Turner Acryl Gouache paints. They're incredibly expensive here.
It’s funny cause I feel like all the people who have been to art school are like oh yeah that’s about right. And you found some pretty good deals too. It’s a lot more achievable than you think. Promise
This video is amazing. I really wanted to get copic markers but am totally content with my Ohuhu markers. As a watercolour artist I totally understand the feeling of wanting to build your own pallete. I did earlier this past fall. I do recommend the Daniel Smith or Windsor and Newton watercolours. When I was in college I splurged on a set of Carandache Supracolor watercolour pencils and they were the best investment I made. I've only had to sharpen them once or twice, these are built to last. A goal I've always wanted to try are the Luminescence Carandache pencil crayons. I really hope you and everyone here has an amazing holiday season. Much love to all and be safe everyone. Time to go make more tea or hot chocolate with cinnamon.
@@TechnicolourFlamingo Mghramm is one of my favorite water colors brand and as someone who owns some Qor and Daniel smith - Jackson’s art supplies had a watercolor brand that is very affordable that I LOVE
the Van Gogh paints are great! They are affordable, yet hold up well compared to the high end brands in my collection. The water doesn't get milky when painting with them, squeezed out paint dries glossy (good sign), they don't seperate and reactivate perfectly. The only issue I've had with them was that just some of their paints have a completely different color on the tube than is actually inside (I've found this to be true just with Davy's grey so far, their tube color was a pastell turquoise but the actual paint is a dark, desaturated brown, which is what Davy's grey generally looks like. Didn't know that and was excited for that turquoise color) but overall, inexpensive, but not "cheap". 9/10, love them!
God art supplies are so expensive. I asked for some polychromos to try and some QOR watercolor and a sketchbook and that’s already enough, like I wouldn’t feel right asking for more. We can all dream for our huge studios with endless money… maybe some day.
I have Arches watercolor paper! If you have something like a PO box I'd gladly send you some sheets, along with a cute customized set of watercolors for you to try out!
But the dreamitem for me would be the Schinke super granulating watercolour sets in the nice wooden bixes. of course you would need somewhere to store all these goodies and that would be the dreambox!!. hope this helps?
Psst. I think the closest I've found to the dream marker storage would be those mail/paper storage slot thingies that teachers usually have. They can be a bit pricey but they're usually a pretty good size!
I truly believe in due time you will have all of the art supplies you dreamt of, and your dream studio. Just collect them little by little. Besides you never know what types of deals may come your way. I was approached by a colleague that was downsizing her craft room. She sold me all 366, the full set of her copic markers on a year long payment plan for $1200 plus the copic bag. I paid her $100 a month for 12 month, until I collected all of the markers and the bag. People often sell used copics on Facebook marketplace as well.
"Limitless Money" or just...you know, save your money and buy stuff over several years. That's how I built my studio. Buy things like colored pencils one at a time and build up a set of colors you'll actually use.
Holbein started selling the Iridori line as individual tubes so you can get them individually now ❤ for watercolor you could see if you have any friends that are willing to send you some dot cards or quarter pans to try out before investing in a whole tube.
I can't justify paying for the exuberant price tag on the Arches watercolor blocks, so instead I buy the large sheets for like $5-9 and cut them down instead. The blocks are nice, but I'm often working on several pieces at a time so I would defeat the purpose of having them 😂
(Im in the middle of the video haha) but I would love to see you try hot press watercolor paper in a video! I have some from fabriano that I really enjoy, it’s a lot like Bristol board but with a slight tooth designed for paint. Super smooth and fun to use!
Ahahaha this was so relatable.. Looking at amazon and art supply websites for endless amounts of time and sighing over things I can't buy as of yet. I have splurged on copics and stopped using them in a few months (coz I am a watercolor gal) but yeah dream studio ftw (hello Pinterest boards! 😂😂) but in the meanwhile I'll settle for my makeshift studio on my bed atm. 😂
Honestly, imagining having a big enough garden to have a 'garden room' built at the end of it, loads of natural light with lots of space for multiple desks and setups is something I spend WAY too much time doing Manifesting a Blick sponsorship for the new year for you
The price of good watercolour paper and sketchbooks is the sole reason I shall forever be an acrylic painter. You can paint on anything (don't quote me on that).
I have copics, ohuhu’s and other marker brands and at this point it’s really hard justifying the price of copics. They are nice but not worth the difference in price. You can get so many ohuhu’s compared to copics. Also I tend to buy things one at a time or when I have extra money so the price is not so overwhelming
A rlly good alternative to the arches watercolor blocks is paul rubens watercolor blocks, they come in both hot and cold press, have plenty of paper, and are only around $10-$15 for one👍
Honestly, the thing with copics is that especially the copics sketch markers are sooooo expensive. I just recently bought a big set of copic ciao markers though and they're much more affordable. Sometimes you can even get them on sale. I think my 72 set was about 100$ (which is still a lot of money don't get me wrong here, but it was definitely worth it in my opinion)
The struggle is so real! Some stuff, very similar to what you put on your list, I have already gotten and have been definitely worth the money so far, even though I don't have a big fancy studio of my dreams yet. Like a tabletop easel has been definitely worth the investment to prevent cat paw prints on my art lol!
hi i have a degree in oil painting! gamblin is the BEST, ive never had issues with anything with gamblin. cheaper alternative, windsor and newton. im sure a million other people have said this but ya :)
OH and they have a REALLY GOOD SET. for $45ish. i dont know if its still available but it's a set that's all reclaimed - they clean up toxic water and turn the leftover pigment into oil paints :) i got a set and there's some variance between sets bc of how its made and im in LOOOOVE with the colors in the palette
Hey there, you can use a french (box) easel as a table easel as well. i’m currently looking into that solution as i do not have a dedicated home studio while i occasionally like to paint outside. What is currently wanted most on my wishlist is a box of sennelier half stick pastels (120 in a wooden box), some pastel pencils of Caran d’Ache and a studio sketching set also from Caran d’Ache but the holbein paints might be added now… 😅
I’m watching this now and crying inside because of how much the prices have changed in just over a year 😭😭 the Holbein Irodori gouache sets used to be 68$ and now they’re 92$
This made me so happy because I love doing this little guilty pleasure on blicks or Amazon haha, I honestly think I’ve built an art collection that I’m satisfied, like the things I want are just extensions of things I’ll have, or either the things I want I feel are just far too expensive so I’ll resort to like copics, or colored pencils. I’m the same way tho!! But the three main things that I have been dreaming to get is the Holbein gouache and colored pencils, as well as the molotow paint markers, I have a couple molotows, their pastels are soo muted in a way that posca doesn’t get but they are like the copics of paint markers to me so a pretty penny 🥲 But what I asked for Christmas is the copic secondary tones set and the fine detail paint brush set on zenart supplies, it’s 12 brushes for 30 bucks and for their quality
If you can justify flying to japan, all copic, sakura, and other japanese brands are so much cheaper there because there is no export tax put on unlike what we see in our local art stores Especially now, I believe the japanese yen is even lower to the US dollar in conversion rates, its more affordable The problem would be the amount and suitcase capacity though hehehe

Oh, so I am not the only one that fills enormous carts on random online art shops and then cry a bit before I decide to close the page. Just this morning I creating the PERFECT acryla gouache pallette. It costs *only* 140$ ... yeah...someday.... I cried with the price of copics alone... (btw, is it just me or copics are getting dry quicker than any other alcohol marker? ^suspicious^ ) Also, I am not even dare to start talking about art books that I would idealy wanted at my shelfs. Actually now that I mention it, I would love to see a similar video with all the art books you want to buy.. 🤍
I'm a fully grown woman with a spouse, child, and a mortgage, and I still asked my mom to get me the Denise Soden Embrace Opacity watercolor set by Da Vinci Paints LOL
Just starting the vid, but can I just mention how many times I've added the jumbo set of Sennelier oil pastels to a cart and then deleted it? And as many here have commented, Arches watercolor paper. You would think it's made from cold pressed unicorn dust.
i do lino cutting and honestly it's not super expensive to do? i bought pretty much the cheapest option of everything and paid $60. but the thing about trying a brand new thing with cheap materials is that the cheap materials are the only thing you've ever worked with, so nothing feels wrong with them
would love a complete copic set, but that is def a dream. a student at uni left a whole set on her desk (big desks), and i was so shocked they left them just sitting there when anynoe could take therm. sure the door had a lock on it, but everyone knew the code lol arches paper is something i will never be able to get
I almost everyday look at my wishlist on amazon and the 48 set of neopastels or the 48set of sennelier oil pastels and those things that go over the 100€. Someday
I have the van gogh watercolor pan set (it is huuuge) and honestly, it´s too many colors and a lot of them granulate. I bought them for 100$ ++ because I didn´t know how to blend 😢. They were and are still nice though. I also just bought a marker set for a similar price. Too scared to use them
Ok I might be the only person on the world that prefers painting with watercolours into Archer & Olive Journals over Arches Watercolour Paper 🤣 I need to try Hot pressed though, maybe its just the surface... 😄
my dream studio is my room.. if I just managed to clean it and KEEP it tidy :') I'm from a well off middle class family I'd say, we can't spend that much but we have no money worries. Since I've always been the cheaper kid warry about costing money my mom usually buys me the supplies I need/want because I don't cost a lot in other areas. I'm wearing my dads old clothes as I type this lol I'm really lucky to have what I have, and I love sharing it. I've made multiple watercolor palettes for friends that they've been enjoying a lot! but I seriously can't wait to make my own money so I can spend it on all the things I want (I won't have to pay rent and would only have to worry about gas and taxes) I'm wondering if you have an amazon wishlist, like that one where people can buy things for other people..?
I feel a bit guilty watching you go "oh that is SO expensive" and look around my office and see a bunch of stuff you're drooling over just scattered around 😅 Though I've been collecting for over 5 years and splurge when I have the spare cash. My first big purchase was the copics, at the time Ohuhu and Arteza and all the other cheaper brands weren't around so it was either buy Spectrum Noir/Winsor and Newton (with no option to refill) or Copics (with refills and nib replacements). Then it was coloured pencils (faber castell, holbein, caran d'ache, derwent lightfast) and some watercolours, and now I'm looking into gouache (I NEED those Holbein Irodori sets!) I would say that unless you want the brand name, XP-Pen and Huion are like the Ohuhu of graphics tablets (compared to Wacom as Copic). I got a 24inch Huion, 2k resolution for about a third of the price of that Wacom Cintiq Pro 16. Smaller resolution, yes, but much more drawing space.
the Arches paper, where I live a pad of 20 sheets is roughly 50€, that's half the price!! I wanted to add this to my previous comment but youtube wouldn't let me edit that one. so, again, if you had a PO box I'd gladly send you some your way for you to try out, for free. I'm sure you'd love it and even with international shipping that's still almost just half the price if you then wanted a full pad yourself!
addition: cold press is the way to go. That's the "rough" one, hot press is smooth. Hot press could be great for gouache, but I've heard mixed reviews leaning negative towards the Arches hot press one. if you can afford to buy a pad, don't waste the money by going for their hot press, the cold press is the iconic, unbeatable pad
Please use your supplies 🤣 I can’t imagine buying something nice and not using it 🥺 one day you’ll open it up and it’ll be dried out and you’ll regret not using it
Love this video! I tend to tease myself and shop for art supplies that I feel I need (spoiler: I don't ) and the one I can never justify buying myself is the Karin decobrush markers. A full set of 84 is $300! Even a set of 12 is $50. The first two I got were from the ArtSnacks subscription box, and I bought one for my bday with another sketchbook (that I most definitely did not need but it was mint colored and I had to have it) and now I just hope and pray that they'll bless me with a good color range...eventually. As for the marker holders, a recent expense that I justified www.amazon.com/dp/B074PC5PVX?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details but I wish they were bigger for that price. They are ok, but if you have someone you know who is handy with wood and can build you a custom one, I think that would be a better deal.

would love a complete copic set, but that is def a dream. a student at uni left a whole set on her desk (big desks), and i was so shocked they left them just sitting there when anynoe could take therm. sure the door had a lock on it, but everyone knew the code lol
arches paper is something i will never be able to get
That’s INSANE i would never let them out of my sight
i know! and there were constant reminders to not leave anything expensive unattended since there had been thefts of supplies happening 😑
Me shopping for art supplies on amazon rn with a whole $55 in my account
You an make homemade gesso with glue, acrylic paint, and corn starch or baby powder. There are lots of good videos about it here.
I’ve wanted a auger house palette so bad but I just can’t afford it! Planning on making my own personally though I know it won’t be the same :((
Defo the wacom tablet imagine the high amount of pixals 😭😭 ive asked for holbien acryla gouache 💪🏻😌
definitely guilty of window shopping art supplies rofl. one can dream!
I almost everyday look at my wishlist on amazon and the 48 set of neopastels or the 48set of sennelier oil pastels and those things that go over the 100€. Someday
If I had limitless funds- Caran D’ache, Schminke, Daniel Smith, M Graham would be immediately in my cart
I have the van gogh watercolor pan set (it is huuuge) and honestly, it´s too many colors and a lot of them granulate. I bought them for 100$ ++ because I didn´t know how to blend 😢. They were and are still nice though. I also just bought a marker set for a similar price. Too scared to use them
.... gesso can be homemade, you aren't limited to tiny tubs :P
I found the full set of copic for 1369 or something on ebay
I think it’s hard to get a studio of any kind when I have to buy expensive art supplies all the time.
Very true!!!!!!
As an oil painter, I can attest that oil paint is like digging a hole of debt and throwing your money into it…but the colors and the arttttt tho 🥴
Ok I might be the only person on the world that prefers painting with watercolours into Archer & Olive Journals over Arches Watercolour Paper 🤣 I need to try Hot pressed though, maybe its just the surface... 😄
thankyou for demotivating me to start painting. I didn't know i need to be rich for creating masterpieces.
my dream studio is my room.. if I just managed to clean it and KEEP it tidy :')
I'm from a well off middle class family I'd say, we can't spend that much but we have no money worries.
Since I've always been the cheaper kid warry about costing money my mom usually buys me the supplies I need/want because I don't cost a lot in other areas. I'm wearing my dads old clothes as I type this lol
I'm really lucky to have what I have, and I love sharing it. I've made multiple watercolor palettes for friends that they've been enjoying a lot!
but I seriously can't wait to make my own money so I can spend it on all the things I want (I won't have to pay rent and would only have to worry about gas and taxes)
I'm wondering if you have an amazon wishlist, like that one where people can buy things for other people..?
Manifesting a fully loaded studio for lilstarnerd 🧘♂️😤
Dont forget lighting.
Then it was coloured pencils (faber castell, holbein, caran d'ache, derwent lightfast) and some watercolours, and now I'm looking into gouache (I NEED those Holbein Irodori sets!)
I would say that unless you want the brand name, XP-Pen and Huion are like the Ohuhu of graphics tablets (compared to Wacom as Copic). I got a 24inch Huion, 2k resolution for about a third of the price of that Wacom Cintiq Pro 16. Smaller resolution, yes, but much more drawing space.
Oh my god we can all dream... also sorry unrelated to the video content but i LOVE your jumper, could you please let me know where it's from? Thanks!
thrifted many years ago, so i have no idea, i'm sorry!!
That’s insane. But also, I feel stuff like this takes time and you can maybe get little by little ❤
bro i got arches on a super good sale maybe like 20 dollars ive oly used it twice cause FEAR
the Arches paper, where I live a pad of 20 sheets is roughly 50€, that's half the price!!
I do have a PO box, it’s listed in the description! I would be so honored if you sent some my way!!
No I get you, and you start taking it all back when you see the price of all the supplies that you wanted 😳
Add 20 things to my cart; see the total; exit the window
@@Lilstarnerd 😂
i loved this lol
This video about to make me get into gouache for those irodori sets, my god
I KNOW IM SO TEMPTED!!
Imagine you added the price of the studio itself 😭😭
If i think about it i’ll cry 😭
I wish us all to have our dream collection of favourite and enjoyable things=) We can do it. Even little by little=) It is still counts as progress=)

2k is college tuition sort of money 😰😰😰
❤❤❤❤❤😮
I want get a real desk
Please use your supplies 🤣 I can’t imagine buying something nice and not using it 🥺 one day you’ll open it up and it’ll be dried out and you’ll regret not using it
Gasps at $2,000 for Copics ….pst look over your shoulder. You did spend that much if not more
Nope absolutely did not but thanks for trying to tell me my business
As for the clay stuff, if you want to drool, check out #Cosclay. They are amazing and revolutionary.
