ive always found it strange that its a common thought in the early retirement crowd that SS wont be around , so im not gonna plan on it helping me , so i need a super low SWR like 3% to last 50 years until im in my 90's ... SS will always be around or poor people would riot in the streets cause theyd be starving...if they bump the tax up just 1% itd make it last another 50 years , among many other simple fixes they could (and will) do ...and for a working couple thats frugal with no debt that can live on something around 3k per month , SS would likely cover all their expenses...so you wouldnt need your money to last 50 years , maybe just 20 years...if the couple retires early at 42 years old and only needs to make it until age 62 before SS pays all their expenses , they have dropped the number they need to retire down from 1.2 million dollars (3% SWR) all the way down to 600k-700k , which is a game changer for sure to almost cut it in half ... and when its only a 20 year time frame it has to cover , if you were super scared of the stock market and risk , you could lock it all in a CD ladder (not my choice)...or maybe half of it in a CD ladder and half in VTSAX ...the options are nearly endless when SS will pay most of your living expenses
