@SpartanandPudgey I actually went back and checked and you didn't jump until Pudgey yelled. I wanted this jump scare to get you so badly, but I have to admit you were right.
@@carriesmith742 Nah, sure looks to me like he was startled and was moving his hand to his chest juuuuust before her scream made noise. Regardless, he handled it like a champ, especially while having headphones in.
Theo's speech to Shirley about what she went through after the jumpscare always turns on the waterworks for me, phenomenal acting of the pain the character went through.
When people say :I hate jump scares. I say.. yeah.. most jumscares are cheap.. and they suck. But they have their use and their space. They are a tool. And when people ask me, I give them that one.
That was definitely Nell. She was getting her sisters to stop arguing. Btw. Nobody not jumps at the scene. Don't feel bad Spartan. You were gonna jump no matter what 😂😂😂
This is my favourite episode. The monologue about the witness marks is so powerful. The way the story turns on “I never built a treehouse” This episode hits every note
@@Grumbo91 Yeah. It would be impossible for Victoria Pedretti to put on makeup and stay in the back seat for hours of recording without them not knowing
@romevo100 in the script it had Neil popping out much later in the conversation. The director told Neil's actress to do it alot sooner so the reaction of the other actresses were 100% genuine
Best thing about this series is that it usually avoids all the normal tropes that make horror films bad. But then when it does actually use them, it uses them in meaningful ways. It’s not just a pointless jump scare, it’s part of the narrative of Nel getting them to stop arguing.
She’s also the best scream queen, ever. Her scream at the end of Episode 3, and in Midnight Mass combine terror and despair in a way that is next level.
Still to this day, the best jump scare ever pulled off. It has meaning, it's done at the perfect time. And it is still making people jump out of their bones 6 years later haha. This show is a masterpiece.
Spartan man, you're the 1st reactor I've seen who thought the house is on fire & Luke can't see it, as was my guess on 1st watch too!😉 & I've watched a few reactions lol! We'd seen another scene with Theo & Shirl & banging all over the walls at Hill House! It's replicating that & I think symbolic that they're haunted overall. It's def the mum at the window of the fertility clinic office! Thanks for all the awesome content guys, lotsa love from Brissy 🥰 💚🇦🇺💜
You're correct that that's Nell, but what S & P we're looking back at was the beginning of the ep where the mum's at the window outside the fertility office where Steve is. 🤟 💚🇦🇺
Watching y’all’s reaction to the dialogue.. especially Theo’s ❤ the jump scare is a legitimate fear paired with screaming from others in the room (my experience too!) I’ve seen a lot of reactions from the two of you. I love that you notice subtle things and we can see the reaction to the heartbreaking moments.. it’s a BIG show to process the first time through! Or 2nd or 3rd honestly lol. You’re doing great ☺️ please react to the hidden ghosts at some point? None of us caught everything the first time around lol don’t listen to anyone giving you 💩 for whatever you haven’t caught yet. I love the raw reactions and the authentic emotion ❤ we’re with you!
The part I think we were all waiting for. Something I think hasn't been brought up is that every time there's a conflict between any of them, Nell intervenes.
lol, yes,.. pudgey scared him, ... jokes beside, this scene is so good, the tension is built up slowly between the sisters and youre totally locked in at that moment and then, ...ghost
Spartan you definitely got jump scared. Don't worry about it we all did on our first watching. This is LITERALLY the best jump scare in ALL of TV history.
I normally don't jump scare easily, and not bad when I do. But HOLY HELL, Headphone flew off, My cigarette launched out of my hand and hit the monitor, almost fell out of my seat, screamed like a little school girl and spent the next 20 seconds trying to compose myself, which of course led to several minutes of me laughing hysterically. I REALLY wish I had been recording it. because it would have been so funny to see me (6'4", 280lbs, Grizzly Adams lookalike) totally losing his shit. Then to follow it with Theo's EPIC monologue, always puts a tear in my eye.
Spartan did seem to process that jumpscare in slow motion. I'm a staunch Pudgey supporter (forever and always), but it did look like her scream is what he reacted to. Either way it was hilarious! Lol That one gets everyone, in different ways.
Did you mean Poppy? When that jump scare happened the first time I watched it, I must’ve jumped 3 feet. It was 2am in my house. That scene works so well because you’re focused on them arguing. It was so great! At first I thought it was some demon, but on rewatch it is Nell. It was almost like she was screaming, “Shut up, you two!!”
31:53 It’s the house in conjunction with the Hills. Cause remember in I think episode 1 when Steve said he found a set of strange games and Mrs. Dudley was telling him how kids stray away from the Christianity ? Then Olivia was saying that they introduced Steve to that when he was younger so he wouldn’t be scared or surprised by anything someone throws at him?? Hence why Steve wasn’t phased by anything throughout his life and was always in denial even when he see these things. Some of the hills used these things and it stayed within the house and connected with the other spirits who lived in the house.
It's crazy that they put some of the best acting in the show right after the biggest jump scare most people will likely ever see XD Like, some people need time to recover from the jump scare in order to absorb what Theo told Shirley
I love "The Haunting . . ." and have watched many reaction videos. Yours are the best. I have my thoughts about some points: I'm sorry Spartan. Steve definitely believed his father killed his mother. Not abused, killed. He thought maybe there was extenuating circumstances: that she was raving insane. Go through the dialog again. Steve has totally cut off his father. During a large family emergency, even highly alienated relatives can work together. I know that from direct experience. These ghosts and the house can psychically mess with people minds and make them insane, or even make them more supernaturally sensitive. That's how it can make them think they're in a tree house, and even that there was a location for it. Steve probably even remembers walking to it. Recall earlier: Little Steve found tarot cards and ouji boards and signs of seances. There are many more ghosts than there should be at the House, more than the Hill family, because the Hill's performed all kinds of occult rituals there. They attracted many spirits that then "made themselves at home." In life, the spirits were probably even like family to the Hills. There are so many active ghosts there that the cumulative effect on the house is to give it a supernatural sentience. Now it has a will and interests. It's evil because ghosts are out of the natural order. Most of the ghosts aren't hostile to the Crains, but they still have a psychic effect on them. One of them is hostile and dangerous. I have to mention this: The bent-neck lady wasn't a ghost. She was a premonition. Imagine having a premonitions of your death starting when you're six-years-old. This show is one part horror, four parts soap opera.
I agree, the show isn't a horror show to me. It's a psychological family drama, a deep dive into the long-term effects of catastrophic trauma and grief on a family, as well as some of the long term outcomes of lacking prompt and healthy professional support..... in a horror context. Though I must admit, horror tropes are a very good analogy to what it feels like to live with the effects of PTSD / CPTSD (as a sufferer of both). The horror (jump scares, gore, ghosts, etc) parallel well to traumatic flashbacks and the extreme responses reliving them induces, and the terror (anticipatory unease/ eeriness/ tension) parallels the anxiety of anticipating or fear induced avoidance of flashback triggers.
The best part of watching you two react to Haunting of H.H. was your reaction to the jump scare in this episode. Awesome ! , even better then what I was anticipating.
22:33 LOVE the edit, although I honestly can't tell, lol. Still a great reaction to one of the best TV jump scares ever! If you like Theo's actress, check her out in " Midnight Mass", which is another Mike Flanagan masterpiece. 35:50 look at Spartan fishing for compliments, LOL. 38:52 POPPY HILL, not Polly! You're thinking Polly from Peaky Blinders, lol.
The thing is by episode 8 you're now deeply into the story and the anticipation of horror has become enjoying the drama of the story and you don't expect it to suddenly switch back, I bet Mike Flanagan just sits chuckling to himself when he thinks about that scene. It then switches massively again to Theo's monologue which immediately throws sadness and grief back into the mix, this show has your emotions dangling like a puppet on a string.
Spartan, anger is a natural response to fear, so that when we’re faced with a life and death situation, our anger makes us fight back. The problem is that fear doesn’t know when our life is really at stake or not. It’s pure survival instinct, but it’s a quite normal reaction.
Victoria Pedretti makes the jumpscare without saying Kate Siegel and Elizabeth Reaser, they’re reaction to the jumpscare is so fuckin’ real even for our girls
Ever seen what happens when the littlest sister is stuck in a small space with her older siblings while they're arguing and yelling and not listening to each other? That's pretty much what Nell did in the car. Except for the part where Nell's dead, it's all very relatable. 🤣
Their original plan for their foreverhouse being drawn over and over over the blueprint of hill house just means that the mother had intergrated the houses in her mind, hill house was to become her foreverhouse. Blink twice to come home is the mother at holl house blinking the light for her kids to come "home", to come to hill house. Yall don't need to make it more complicated than it needs to be lol 😂❤️
LOL my mom is the same way; if were in a scary situation and I express my fear (like talking or moving fearfully) she gets SO mad and crashes out on me. But it sucks lowkey because it has made me a super cold and closed off person lol
I was late to the Hill House party, so and watched it in two parts on blu-ray, so it's always felt like one big movie to me. It's so much fun watching it again with you guys (and I think we've all been waiting for THAT part of this episode), but only watching one episode a week must have been maddening.
In Pudgey's defense...well,in both of your defense, I don't get shocked by jump scares that often. That one got me; year's later and it's a memorable one.
You guys are awesome! You need to watch the Fall of the House of Usher. Please consider as it is way scarier and equally amazing!! OH...the part where Spartan tries to explain how Pudgey scared him and not the show...pure comedy!!!

Awesome reaction, we all waited for this jumpscare 😅🚗👻😱😭😓🤝❤ Sidenote: Your reaction timestamp is set to 4:20 but it's 3:20 :) Can't wait for you to upload the last two episodes!
Stop making excuses, pudgey was actually part of the cast, they had planned for her to scare the shit out of u and u weren't the least bit prepared for it Getting happy or scared etc, all feelings are tuned up due to socializing in any way with others, that is why when we laugh a comedy, we laugh much harder if we watch it with others, it is a natural sign of empathy and wanting to belong, nothing weird about it 🙂 Anyway, i is weird how this series stays so memorable
I always like when theo mention that Shirleys husband was the light in the darkness. Indicating that he was a good person. He only took the money, for shirley to keep give free funeral´s. Because he knew it was important for her. Obvious the clock and tree house plot it was so good... but for me... the next episode is very important, to connect things up
if you fucks spart and pudge were paying attention the whole time!! you would have seen ghosts in the backgrounds of every episode. its almost like a game to find them.
honestly the house being on fire and luke not being able to see it would be a way better plot twist than what actually happened tbh (before anyone comes for me they finished on patreon so im not spoiling)
I don't know if someone else mentioned this already, but a very interesting info is that each of the 5 children represent a stage of grief. Steve for instance is denial.
Love your reactions. While the rest of Mike Flanagan's shows are very good, very well made and I enjoyed them all, they still are not as completely epic as this series was for me. That said, I look forward to your reaction to them ;) I do suggest watching his movies "Gerald's Game" and "Doctor Sleep" as well (both based on Stephen King books), though only watching the latter (Dr. Sleep) after you watched the classic movie "The Shining" as it is, in essence, part two of that movie EDIT - and everyone seems to forget that the knocking that Shirley and Theo experienced at the funeral home, happened to them earlier when they were kids as well :) "Why are you knocking?"
is the hills, the last part where we watch luke and that ghost (poppy ghost) she was the worst spirit, Everyone who steps into that house ends up crazy or dead. this is my fav serie top number 1 then stranger things

Spartan tries to explain away the fact that he was scared. 😂
The best part is even Shirley and Theo's actors had no idea it was going to happen. That's why it was so genuine.
love hearing that every-time, i Hope all directors do that for horror Shows / Movies
They knew it was going ro happen, just not that soon.

EDIT - and everyone seems to forget that the knocking that Shirley and Theo experienced at the funeral home, happened to them earlier when they were kids as well :) "Why are you knocking?"
lol pudgey screamed in the exact same way nellie screamed at theo and shirley, just different pitch lmao
HAHAHAH
is the hills, the last part where we watch luke and that ghost (poppy ghost) she was the worst spirit, Everyone who steps into that house ends up crazy or dead. this is my fav serie top number 1 then stranger things
