This song was written about the troubles in Ireland 🇮🇪 many other countries who have experienced civil war can also relate to this song. I am proud to be irish ☘️
I always interpret the song as a ww1 soldier suffering from PTSD and is haunted by the memories long after the battles have ended. He laments about future wars and how it is "The same old thing, since 1916". The "zombies" were just the people dying over and over again in his head and the word 'zombie' could also refer to the soldier himself. Living life as someone who seen death and is practically already dead himself (in a mental, emotional, and spiritual sense).

Today I listened to this song as a Russian and it was the first time I ever cried because of a song. This song is 27 years old and still has so much relevance. I feel so much guilt to have the same citizenship as 150 million zombies.
@Shaise Kindering doesn’t really show, many Russians I’ve talked to seem to be for it, or they are silent, and silence is compliance. Even in Europe many Russian immigrants who have access to free press don’t seem to be so angered by this atrocity, I don’t see them going out protesting. I really wish it was only Putin but sadly it’s not
All you zombies on here thinking the Russians are the bad guys.. Wake up ffs, do some research. The Ukrainian nationalists have been killing Ukrainian Russians for the last eight years, and Putin is finally putting a stop to it. How many kids have been killed in the last eight years just for being ethnic Russians. Look up the alley of angels you gobshites, and wake up to the lies you are being fed. FoughtStatue No, I looked it up on Wikipedia because I wanted to know what was the meaning behind the song ! Sunday Bloody Sunday was a U-2 song from back in 1982 maybe that's what you're talking about my friend, I'm sure U-2's Sunday Bloody Sunday had something to do with what you said ? Anyway you have a great night !

But when someone asks me what are you I say Irish lol, because when asked that question they really mean where did you're ansestors came from, my Grandmother was from Scottland, so all my ansestors came from somewhere in the UK.... Peace my brother...
Ken Bray Yeah I think you’re right. I just usually think songs about the Irish and uprisings and things like that are about that Sunday. Also I am not Irish but my ancestors are Irish. Also have some English and German(apparently I’m related to some English kings so that is cool)

Weird, huh? You see a thumbnail of the video with few men and only one woman and such a comment yet still someone asks "who is she".... Well, duh - maybe the singer of the band?
She really had an iconic voice. Theres a reason why people listen to the old stuff. It was deep, and had some awsome lyrics that werent the same as everything else.
I can´t stop crying... This brings back so many memories... My dad would show me all these songs and tell me their names and meanings. RIP Dolores. You will always e remembered.
What a beautifully sad song. So thoughtful and visceral if you let it soak in. We need more of this in the world to speak the truths of war and weapons and pain with their tanks and their bombs... wow just wow breaks my heart in all the right ways I must say!
I love her voice, her accent, and the song itself. But the lyrics, are so much more. make the song itself mean so much more when you listen to the lyrics and not the beat. It makes your brain think. About what the song is about. I found out recently and it made me cry. So many people my age don't care at all about things like that. Nowadays they just care about being popular. They don't realize that more things happen than they think. I'm honestly worried for the sake of the world because the people in the world right now seem to get worse and worse as the years pass. We claim to have advanced greatly but only in technology. But people themselves have mostly lost sight of what's important. It can be good to only remember the good things for one moment. But come to reality. This song just proves that more things happen than people seem to care about.
Nala, can you let us know what its about specifically? I am asking because you raced right by the historical meaning of this music's lyrics. Everyone has googler anyway...
Powerful words, I wonder if you still fill the same a year later after having experience death all around the world with the pandemic. I wonder if you have been mindful about others, the sick the elderly. Or have you been selfish spreading the virus like some careless ppl do for whatever reason …freedom, political, etc.
My dad was in this music video.as one of the soldiers. He died this February we spent so much time slagging.each other but he was.my dad.and he left.behind a.grandson too miss you so much.dad and I'll always love u
This song still breaks my heart. As long as we hide from the truth of the horrors of war, we'll be nothing more than zombies following blindly under the words of those who seen to profit off of suffering. War is a monster unlike any other, and the fact that people still defend the idea of it under the guise of "protection" and "order" is disgusting. I loathe paying taxes only because i know most of them go into perpetuating these battles rather than constructive things, such as programs for the needy and educating our society.
So I now know this to be about the Bishopgate bombings, but listening to the lyrics I completely thought it was about PTSD caused by war. It's really easy to interpret it as someone watching another person who's living their life as a 'zombie' haunted by their memories of war.
I agree! War is hell for all. Families are destroyed, countries. Those fighting have seen such horror and PTSD may very well play a part. One friend of mine does not turn his back yet today to someone of Asian decent because of his Viet Nam experience. It's so sad how war can put such damage to our mental status. All caused by evil greed for power over others!
I found out about this song after hearing Bad Wolves' cover on the radio. I fell in love with it immediately, and not long after, I learned what the song was truly about. This is a very powerful song

I love her voice. Always been a fan of the Irish accent. And I think it's the first time I've heard a Brit sing in their own accent. :)
Jan Terry Listen to their older songs, anything from Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. His Sheffield accent is very, very clear, he doesn't try to drop it like many British singers.
The Cure!!!
+Jan Terry Brit? What the fuck?
not at all british....
+Jan Terry you obviously don't know an awful lot about about Irish history to say such a thing!
This song makes me cry and gives me goosebumps. I am Italian , but I know Irish people are very proud and brave . Ciao
As an Irish person you are 100% right. Thanks for the support from Italy. It’s nice to know we’ve support from other countries.
The IRA (Irish Republican Army) is a militant group that was determined to remove British troops from Northern Ireland. Lead singer Dolores O'Riordan claimed that "Zombie" speaks about "the Irish fight for independence that seems to last forever." The lyrics even say, "It's the same old theme since 1916."
OOF same comment But i had more info i only said its anti-war
Irish Moth it was written as a response to the IRA bombing people calling paramilitary groups Zombies it’s not about which side was right or wrong it was about tragic events taken place due to senseless acts of violence
It's still based on both sides! Fair play too bad wolves for covering it also
Irish Moth Yh he did an amazing job! What a wonderful song

This was my dad's favorite song. me and all my siblings know all the lyrics by heart. when he was in his death bed I made sure to play this for him one more time. Sometimes on the anniversary of his death this comes on. I take it as a sign that he's up there, listening to this while riding four-wheelers and hanging out with Grandma, or as we called her, Ma.

In case any have forgotten, this is about an old WW1 soldier with PTSD. Have some respect.
It could just as well be about Northern Ireland during The Troubles, even if they didn't use tanks and planes in that war.
It was written by the lead singer, Dolores O'Riordan, about the young victims of a bombing in Warrington, England, during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
All the people who disliked it were either
1)Holding their phone upside down
Or
2)They disliked the song because it ended
Or
3) They just have no idea what real music sounds like
Or in Australia

Today I listened to this song as a Russian and it was the first time I ever cried because of a song. This song is 27 years old and still has so much relevance. I feel so much guilt to have the same citizenship as 150 million zombies.
@Shaise Kindering doesn’t really show, many Russians I’ve talked to seem to be for it, or they are silent, and silence is compliance. Even in Europe many Russian immigrants who have access to free press don’t seem to be so angered by this atrocity, I don’t see them going out protesting. I really wish it was only Putin but sadly it’s not
Well you are wrong. And those other 150 millions zombies and others around the world are proud of what Russia is doing.

Russians literally had a massive protest in St. Petersburg despite knowing that they might be arrested or killed.

Dolores wrote this song in protest of the Bishopgate bombings by the provisional Irish Republican Army Aka IRA.... Happened in 1993 in Londons Financial District ! RIP Dolores you will be missed...
Nice
I think she wrote it about Bloody Sunday when the British shot and killed 14 unarmed Irish but ok. Also Rip Dolores
FoughtStatue Are you Irish ? My Grandfather was from Ireland, but I know how much the Irish people don't like it when an American says he's Irish through his ansestors !
Also have some English and German(apparently I’m related to some English kings so that is cool)
listening to this song at this moment is so heartbreaking :(

In your head, in your head
They are cryin’
In your head in your head

Another mother’s breakin’ heart is taken over
When the violence causes silence
We must be mistaken
It’s the same old team since 1916
In your head, in your head they’re still fightin’
With their tanks and their bombs and their bombs and their guns
In your head, in your head they are dyin’
