- Today, June 1, 2023, I am releasing myself from all that binds me like a career that is finally spent. There is no more change in the pocket.
I submitted my paperwork and have stepped into what's next.
Yes, June 2 (smile). No, the rest of my life.
25 years teaching in higher education was challenging for a self-identified Black woman.
Black people did not want to be seen with me.
I was isolated. Scheduled so that no one saw me. Given classes that did not fill. Passed over for opportunities I asked for consideration. Hired for one job, then my job was given to someone else.
All my friends slowly one by one died or retired or both.
Higher Education is not a place where one thrives when isolated.
My younger daughter told me they only love each other. It was true.
But I made it. My body took blows. I had to have a therapist for 30 years too, to function. But eventually the body broke down. There is no such thing as mind over matter.
The matter is what matters. I am not broken, but I have hits. Scars. Aches.
However, I am still here. I could be dead. So I am grateful. These institutions are not healthy for conscious Black people. Fitting in is costly, not fitting in is also costly because people are social.
We thrive when we have congenial relationships.
In 25 years, no administrator ever complimented me on anything. I was never recognized for my service here.
25 years is time spent I cannot retrieve. I walk away without a backward glance. I was a good teacher. I don't claim perfection and there will never be another Professor Wanda Sabir.
Time is wealth and I am claiming all my gifts and not letting anything or anyone spend my life.
I am not giving myself away either.
I am releasing myself and walking free, thinking free thoughts, being free.
I went to the podiatrist this morning, got my feet checked. Wearing heavier socks and cushioned shoes.
To walk free I need the right footwear. Freedom is accessorized and fashionable. I plan to wear it well.
Thank You Sis Wanda for sharing Your Freedom Walk🌹
