Robert the Bruce and William the Conqueror are two completely different people who lived centuries apart. Please fix the title of this video.
Robert the Bruce was related to William the Conqueror. He was William's fifth great grandson.
@@MG-bv8fihowever there is absolutely nothing about William The Conqueror in this video. It says nothing about Robert The Bruce. Scots would be interested in him but not so much William.
You are so correct, my wife is also a descendant of Robert the Bruce, and I am a descendant of Richard FitzGilbert, Williams brother. William snd Richard lived in the 11th century, snd fought the Battle of Hastings in1066. Robert lived,as stated in the 14th century. You'd think they'd think before titling a documentary...
Good call!
It’s so misleading
I don’t understand why they don’t change it
@@lynnw8231 I thought William the Conqueror only had two brothers, Odo and Robert ??

Not William the Conqueror.
Kind of important little detail, considering all that William the Conqueror did.
Wouldn't it be ironic if he inherited her squeaky voice from Robert the Bruce?
Was just about to say this.
Both warrior kings but yea, completely different people.
@@jamesricker3997 what...
I love how genealogy makes history so personal.
True! He's my ancestor, too, and so so many others, but it is really interesting to be able to trace it back and connect the dots! That's the fun part.

@@F4Insight-uq6nt and how is that?
She has a lot to be very proud of, Robert the Bruce was an amazing strategist and certainly one of the most courageous symbols of Scotland as a nation. Of course, Scotland these days should really be fighting a different battle, it's not about Scotland and England, but the economic battle, but one thing still remains throughout Scotland to this day is the pride, tenacity and courage the people of this country have to this very day.

@@Powerhaus88 unfortunately, it exists throughout both Westminster and the Scottish parliament, attacked from both sides, which is why I've long argued that regardless of where Scotland sits, we're being overrun by a people who perpetuate this tyranny.
Robert the Bruce was actually Norman French, not really Scottish.
My ancestry goes back to James Douglas , the right hand man of Robert the Bruce. He fought alongside the Bruce at Bannockburn and upon Robert's death agreed to take his heart to the holyland to be buried on his crusade. Unfortunately his heart never got there because James was killed in battle against the Moores in Spain. James died trying save another close friend of Roberts , a Sinclair.
My ancestors, the Percy’s, were wardens of the northern border and fought against her ancestors. I know, I know, who the hell cares, but even relatively obscure history is still important to some. My ancestor William Percy fought in William the conquerors army although he was not at the battle of Hastings.
Good you know your roots, man. In This age of deletion and tomfoolery it’s a welcome surprise. I’m sure my ancestors weren’t ashamed of their roots either, so that’s good.
My ancestor came across the channel with William the Conqueror and did fight at Hastings. He was rewarded with land and title in Northwest England for his service during the invasion. I love history.
@@Uhtredrag1080 thanks for words like beef and pork
Does that mean you are also a descendant of Harry Percy who fought Henry the 5th? If you are, you have a good noble line there dude.
@@joshuaperry7199
Yes, that was Henry “Hotspur” Percy Who died in the battle. His son also Henry was later reinstated as the Earl of Northumberland by none other than Henry V himself and regained most of his family’s prior holdings. The Percy family are Dukes today.
A name I am having trouble tracing is Sir William Macnaderte Deane.
I'm asking anyone at this point with any leads to that name, as it (Macnaderte) was used it seems as a middle name in a time that is not common for middle names yet. He married Elizabeth Leigh, daughter to Sir Thomas Leigh.
Our lines goes as far back to a Robert de Dene. At this time I'm still awaiting an official count as to how many in the family tree were knights, and yes I know about the Roll of Knights, but what I didn't know is there are different levels knights can be.
Pretty neat my ancestors are intertwined with her family tree as well, when it comes to the different roles they had such as knights.
The current Sir William Dean in Australia, is also a decendent of Robert de Dene.
soooo interesting on a historical level as well as the micro, makes us think......thank you for the history lesson and sharing the knowledge...amazing....

5.6% Baltic .
My surname is Muldoon.surnames of my mothers side are Parker & Douglas. Was surprised we had no English at all although my son has 30% through his father. These islands are small but there’s a lot of history between all 4 nations.
Well I got excited when I found out that one of my ancestors was a shop keeper! Other than that they were agricultural labourers and then factory hands. But hey, I'm proud of all these ordinary people that made me.
Plus, no inbreeding issues to worry about...
One of my ancestors Was Clement Wragge (2nd Great Grandfather) gave the names to Cyclones/Hurricanes.
As well you should be!
I don't have any kings in my direct ancestry, but I'm descended through my mother from Wawrzyniec Korwin, ennobled in Poland in 1224. The Hungarian-Romanian branch of the same family produced Hungary's national hero John Hunyadi, who had an illegitimate daughter we know nothing about - save that she married Vlad II Draculea. Sixteen generations later is King Charles III.
Not really a big deal. There are millions of us descended from Grandpa William.
You’re absolutely correct 😉
You're related to Hilary Duff then!
yes in fact genealogists have found out that if you can trace your lines that far back and you are NOT related to royalty then THAT IS THE RARITY!... BUT STILL ..my should does remember just like her sons evidently does...many believe we keep being reborn into of family should groups throw-out the ages...i think so too...i just wish my family could've learned more from the wars of the roses!
And the ironic thing is most of you are probably burke's from Ireland 😂

I just noticed that...I wondered why another comment said something about William the conquerer
Yeah 1066 and all that was way before what are talking about here?
Anybody who knows the monarchs history KNOWS every monarch since 1066 was descended from William the Conqueror. It's a bloodline, hence all heirs to the throne needing a "spare".
I paid a lot of money to do an ancestry search but it was worth it. I am directly related to my Great, great, great, great, great grandfather. They hadn't a clue what he did.
Sounds like he was a great man

Robert the Bruce was a direct descendant of William the Conqueror so she is related to him.
The title is completely wrong. Not William The Conqueror.

Now I can tell my hubby's family about another famous actress who is related via a common ancestor!
Good for you. This reminds me of a funny situation.
A couple of years ago at a family gathering, I was talking to my husband's ex-mother-in-law. My husband and his ex and the ex's family are still great friends and they accepted me in their midst.
The two of us were talking about Scottish genealogy. She is the descendant of a Scottish officer who had moved to the Netherlands in the 18th century and I am descended from a Scottish common foot soldier from around the same time.
As I recently discovered a 16th-century Dutch gateway ancestor opening up lines to European royalty. I enthusiastically told her I also found a link to Scottish royalty. Her reaction was very funny. She gasped in amazement and said very loudly: You? Upon which one of her children said: The Bouquet woman is back. We all including the old lady laughed our heads off. I hope your in-laws can also see the fun in genealogy and realize that by being related to you through your husband, They have their own connection to the famous. Greetings from Germany.
Robert The Bruce is my 21st great grandfather !!! William The Conquerer de Normandie is one of my great grandfather's as well , I want to say 30th but I might be wrong
This is great but they could literally do this with a random old lady in a nursing home in New Hampshire and come back to the same thing.if you go back far enough we’re all related
I guess Hilary and I are related as Robert the Bruce is one of my Great Grandfathers also.

What a load of hooey. The chances are extremely good that I'm a descendant of William the Conqueror along with 5 million people in the UK. Hillary, you were working in movie industry. Go and watch Braveheart! Not very accurate movie to learn about Robert The Bruce, but at least you'll be more familiar with his name
Probably everybody of English descent is a descendent of William the Conqueror. It's proving it that is very difficult. All of my lines got stuck in the 1500s or later but luckily I had a single ancestor that was minor nobility and who took me back to William

You have 8 million 21 times great grandparents. Maybe one of them is Robert the Bruce. If you have ancestors from Scotland he is probably your ancestor.
Because if you go back far enough in history, you eventually get to the point where essentially everyone is your ancestor. At least anyone that had children and kept their lineage going. The channel UsefulCharts has a good video on here about this called "Is Everyone a Descendant of Royalty?"

Anyone called burke in Ireland is a direct decendent of William the conqueror.
I descend directly from many Royals including Princess Marjorie and King Edward. He was sent to Ireland to open another front against the English and to take out any Irish that supported the English. He was in several battles from 1315-1318 before falling in battle but by then he had accomplished those two goals. I also descend directly from King Brian Boru.🏴Dunlop Royalty🏴

Always like Hilary after seeing her getting interviewed by Frank Skinner when she was sixteen
Having lineage traced back to royalty is kind of cool, but, I would guess if there were records going back far enough they would show most all people alive today are descended from the version of "royalty" of some of their pre-history ancestors' time and region. Humans have hundreds of thousands of years and at some points populations were small, blood mixed, leaders came and went, and here we all are. I think the coolness factor for royalty today comes from the fact it was recorded more than bloodline. Inside a human is just human after all. And don't forget, some, maybe lots of, royal blood fell victim to inbreeding which harms their descendants more than it helps them. So, it may not be so recent as 800 years but we all have high leaders/royalty somewhere in our past.
William the Conqueror is related tp my Cadotte family
THE TITLE IS WRONG. It's Robert The Bruce not William the Conqueror.

My ancestors are the Sang Royal du France. The French royal line. I do believe France and Scottland were allies back then.
I find it utterly delusional that we can place so much trust in genealogy. Return to the 12th century and assert with as much assurance that one is a descendant of the King of Scotland. Even at 3 generations, there may be family secrets that we don't know. So imagine at 21.
My 23x great grandfather is Edward I

Surly she's seen Braveheart? The Bruce only had one child that had offspring, his daughter. So there won't be as many descendents as people think.
