And yes, I bought the car for half asking, I'm sure the computer was already failing and stranding the former owner all over the place... Most major electrical parts had already been replaced. Computers not only fail... they lie.

Self-driving cars are useless in Canada during bad snowstorms. Here in Southern Ontario, we often get such bad storms in the winter that there are 4 to 6 inches of snow over the pavement and it becomes difficult to even 'GUESS' where the actual road is, compared to where the farmer's field is. Usually, you just have to look at the pile of snow up ahead of you, and you can make out the 'Ridge' of snow, and you assume that 'ridge' is the road, and the valleys on either side are the ditches, and you drive towards the high spots and avoid the low spots. Self-driving cars cannot deal with driving conditions like that.

You are spot on about automated cars, Scotty! When I studied computer networking at the University of Houston, our class was tasked with writing a procedure for a human to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Most of us came up with a procedure in 2 to 10 steps. Our instructor then tasked us with brainstorming how an AI would do this. My group anticipated it would take millions of steps since a robot with AI does not have common sense such as knowing what a knife is, how to get the ingredients, what the ingredients are, and so on to near infinity.

Self-driving cars will lead to the same thing as auto pilots did on airplanes. They flew them into mountains, buildings, radio towers and one another until the pilots finally learned to cross check the auto pilots and remain the "eyes" of the ships.

The infrastructure for the amount of people commuting like the 710 in flying cars would be ridiculous now, and even 50 years from now, regardless of mindblowing the current tech is.

You are right on about the lawyers coming out and having a field day. Plus I believe there will be many situations where insurance companies will not pay off. Why would they pay when the accident was caused by a problem with the cars manufacturer or a software , or a glitch in the system controlling the vehicles. Insurance companies don't want to pay now. But if a car was not being driven by the insured and by the car itself they will say it's not their responsibility.

They have probably avoided the law suites and probably will go on to avoid them by the fact that It makes incredibly clear that it is the users fault.
Same deal with cruise control, if you crash a car with cruise control it isn't cruise control's fault.
Same deal with satnavs, You can't sue a satnav mfg because the satnav told you to drive into a lake.
It would be different if the car took full control and prevented/ignored user input... That is VERY different and they probably would have a law suit on their hands.

The filter is going to determine when you should change the oil. I wouldn't push it past 10K miles. I change my oil and filter every 5K miles with conventional oil. For conventional oil you can see it thickening up at around 5K miles. Don't go by the color, that's just the detergent in the oil doing it's job and if it's black it doesn't mean it's bad. Go with the thickness instead. If you have a car that has small oil holes in the pistons or oil galleries then change oil every 3K miles. You don't want a sludge buildup as it will heatup and destroy the engine.

Adding to Scotty's Fuel advice: A buddy told me when he worked in a gas station, the underground "regular" tank got filled much more often than the other two because people bought more because it was $0.20 cheaper. The half-full or less tank would develop rust and condensation in the empty part and contaminate the fuel which was then dumped into customers' engines. In the short term it didn't damage any cars but over time that's gotta hurt. Replacing an underground tank puts the station out of business for a month or so in addition to the heavy cost, so most stations will live with it. Buddy advised to spend the extra money for Premium fuel. That was a big expense when gas was $1.20/gal, but with prices at $3.50 or more, the extra $0.20 represents a mere 6% increase in order to help the car last an extra few years.

I’m looking for some sage advice. I bought a 2008 Mini Cooper S. It was advertised that it would need a new computer. It had a code of P0687 ECU relay voltage high. I trouble shot, and hoped that it was somehow the way ECU/DME was calculating the control module voltage. My scan tool says that the control module voltage is 25.6667 volts. I have measured voltage in several different places from the head lights to the license plate light and all I can get is between 12 and 13.0 volts with the engine off or engine idling. But, tis is only the start of my problems. I sent my DME off to have it diagnosed, and repaired. The company promised that for $999.00 they could swap out my DME and program it for my vehicle and fix the P0687. I took pictures of my old DME just for future reference. Low and behold, it was not the original DME that came with the car. I only found that out after researching a couple days ago. The DME company sent me a refurbished DME and I plugged it in and my Mini powered up and ran. The original P0687 problem came back, along with a new problem U0101 Lost communication with the TCM. I forgot to mention that My Mini is a 6 speed manual transmission so there is no TCM (at least I don’t think so) Before I send the DME I want to make sure this P0687 problem is not in one of the control modules in the car. I read about checking the coding on the CAS to make sure the battery is registered and a pletera of other diags. I bought BMW DIS V44, V57, SSS V63 & TIS V8 GT1 INPA EDIABAS DIAGNOSTIC DEALER SOFTWARE. Woah NELLY! I’ve only opened whole nother can of worms. I found that the VIN in the DME doesn’t match the VIN in the CAS. AND I have no way of knowing if the Vehicle Order that is currently in the DME is the proper Vehicle Order for my vehicle. I say that because I think this DME is possible from a vehicle that had an automatic transmission. Is there a place to find the proper original Vehicle Order for the VIN of my car? Who can properly code my DME with the correct Vehicle Order? Or should I just give up and drive it the way it is? Other than burning a little oil, and a check engine light, it runs pretty good.

@Scotty Kilmer Hey Scotty I purchased a 2018 Toyota Camry SE that I’ve been having issues with I purchased it used at 45k miles. At 57800 miles my Camry threw a array of warning lights pre-collision system malfunctioning, Secondary Brake collision system malfunction, PCS light on, engine light on, Slip Control light on, and Triangle warning Lamp. I had it towed to a GM dealer that I purchased it from and they suggested replacing the coil pack and plug on cylinder 4 because of the P0304 Code the Camry was throwing. They ordered through a local Toyota Dealer and replaced the coil and plug. I get the car back drive it 84 miles and every warning light as before comes back on had to drive it back to the GM dealership I purchased it from. Now throwing all the same array of warning lights etc and misfire code they suggest replacing the injector so they ordered it as before stated and replaced it. Drive it again and the Camry still showing the pending misfire code on the back end but no warning lights as before. So I take it to a actual Toyota dealership and they run diagnostics on it and freeze frame data and they state they see no misfire and clear the pending code and get charged $110 for a diagnostic fee. So I drive it and here the Camry is still throwing the pending misfire code on cylinder 4. Idk what to do to solve this I have made 3 attempts to fix this issue already. I did contact Toyota directly and was assigned a case manager that I haven’t spoke to yet. I spoke to a case manager and they say theirs nothing toyota can do unless a dealership can replicate the issue. My cars constantly clearing the p0304 code and randomly throwing it back on pending especially after it sits for a while and start it it has a rough idle. This cars just driving me crazy

wholeNwon got in it earlier today and everything came back on engine light all the array of warning lights that I mentioned before when this first happened. P0304 Stored,Pending, Permanent on code reader and if I was reading it right 64 counts of misfire on the 4th cylinder. So I took it to a Toyota dealership and dropped it off waiting to see what they say in the morning and what my case manager will now say considering a Toyota dealership will be able to see all the array of warning lights and codes. This cars driving me crazy and this with be the 4th time taking it to a dealership over the same issue and 4th attempt at fixing it. No clue if I’m within or able to file a lemon law on the car or not..

In the affected vehicles, the camshaft lobe that drives the brake vacuum pump may shear off, resulting in a loss of brake assist. ... Volkswagen's number for this recall is 23R1.”

Had a 2002 Acura (bought it used at 179k miles) transmission that started to drop shift at 60, shuttered at 28 trying to shift to third and other bad signs. Changed the trans fluid/external filter... only got worse.
Read online about the solenoid packs and that they usually have little tiny thimble-like filters.
On this car they were fairly easy to access so I took the packs off, removed the 'thimble-like' filters and cleaned them with break cleaner. Put the packs back on the car.
And *presto!* the car drove perfect!. The trans was obviously starting to fail, though... about 10k miles later it began to exhibit a couple of the shifting problems again.
So... I repeated the same 30 minute process again. This time I got 9k.
    Then 9k
    Then 12k
... this went on for 85k more miles before the trans internally failed... but that was ok, since I paid $900 for it and got an additional 125k miles out of it!
So... check to see if your car has a solenoid/solenoid pack attached to the transmission. If you are cheap like me, you might save yourself some $$$.
