He was friends with the sheriff and they put on free shows at the local park. But it was in the 90's and a little different than my first early experiences but never the less was still even great then when my friends and I enjoyed it. Hey! it was free! How could anyone complain?
It's so gratifying to see John Kay perform "Magic Carpet Ride". I know we all have to get old but this guy still has that mid to late 1960's energy needed to enhance 'The Ride'.
John Kay has simply been MAGNIFICIENT in his song writing and performances for a half a Century! Look at the energy that music has given to him and know that he wants to transmit it's goodness for decades to come. BRAVO!
Purchased Steppenwolf Live when it came out. Still one of my favourite albums. Always loved the segue of Hey Lawdy Mama into Magic Carpet Ride. Great band.
Classic stuff right there boy. This my first time seeing this masterpiece performed live by “SteppenWolf”. So much energy, stage presence, singing and musicianship. The first time I heard this song as teen back in the 70’s I really liked it. Peace Out.✌️
John Kay is not his real name. He was born in Occupied Poland. When he sings about 'right between a sound machine', he's talking about being over at a friend's house and sitting between 2 speakers. Magic Carpet Ride is about cocaine.
Yes, Mr. John Kay is of German descent, born Joachim Fritz Krauledat in the town of Tilsit in former German East Prussia. In 1958 his family together with youngster Joachim migrated to Canada. In 1969, if I remember correctly, I had the great pleasure of hearing him and STEPPENWOLF live in Frankfurt, Germany. He still speaks German fluently and has never severed his ties to this country. Given, that he named his band after the title (character) of DER STEPPENWOLF, beside Siddharta one the most successful novels of Nobel Prize winner Hermann Hesse (more than 100 million copies of his books sold worldwide, only surpassed by those of the Brothers Grimm) , John Kay did not hesitate in the summer of 2002 to come over to the town of Calw, Hesse's place of birth, to celebrate the latter's 125th birthday. I found some very rare footage, in German, though, of the national TV-Station ARD of that event on August 4th, 2002 on Facebook I don't know who uploaded this on Facebook, and naturally I don't have any rights in it. And, yes, MAGIC CARPET RIDE has always been and will remain one of my absolute favorites ever since I first heard the song on AFN, the American Forces Radio, Frankfurt.
I love music, I hear a lot, but this singer is the best, he far from the rest, his warmth, his manly tone, his natural cadence, the color of his beautiful voice. It is admirable how wonderful it is (was)
I saw them in 1970 in Corpus Christi, TX. It was my first concert. They are a great and very under rated band. They still sound great. Their first album is a classic.
I first heard this song when I was 11 years old along with Easy Rider and The Pusher, and so many others that never made the hit list ..... what a great rockin' band they were !!
Saw these guys back in '82 at a small bar that cleared a place in the middle of the dance floor so they could use it as a stage area. We were right up close face to face with John and the band. Absolutely the most rocking high energy concert I'd ever experienced. Saved the Pusher (long version) for last and the place just went crazy!
Unglaublich, vierzig Jahre auf der Bühne ohne Qualität einzubüßen! Da können leider nur die wenigsten klassischen Band der frühen Hardrock Ära mithalten. Weiter so Jungs! Mag die Musik seit meiner frühen Jugend, war zwar erst in den frühen achtzigern, ist aber auch schon eine Zeit her. Danke für das hochladen, super video, super Sound, einfach super Musiker!

Used to sit on a hand made Persian carpet smoke some listening to steppenwolf I flew the 1970 where great there was new wind I am 71 and still love the carpet more than any airline
I can remember this song as it was yesterday. I was only 11 yrs. old when I first heard it on a live daytime TV show. It caught me by surprize. It was before Zep or any of the hard groups of that period. I was mezmerized watching it with JK and his sunglasses. All I could do was watch with amazement. I also remember my older sister asking me after if I she liked them but kinda wondering if she really did. My answer to her was without any hesitation. I replied YES. Then I asked her and her reply and was yes. I went out and bought the 45 soon after. 1968 as a small kid not really knowing hard rock as they called it back then. But there was something there that drawed me to them. I was an AM pop music listener then. But first time! There was no question about it. Also back then it was kinda taboo to listen to that type of music. Then soon after to me, came the following songs The Pusher and Born to be wild. I always liked them. I think I was the only 11 year old to maybe and surely liked them. Still to this day will always like em. Maybe some were the same age and even younger. I don't know. I was a Beatles fan when I first heard them even before the Ed S. show in 64. The reason I knew it was before was remembering "I wanna hold your hand in 64." and "I feel fine" in 65. I was only in 2nd grade before ES. I don't remember what show it was on but remembering my dad hitting the fan. He broke my first 45 because he hated them. I remember how that broke me up. I think mom (who bought it for me) gave him some S about it. I also would see The Doors, JA, Strawberry AC, The Who etc. later when the music was starting to change. Dad hated the Beatles at first when he broke my 45 but I think he came to like them when I saw Hey Jude live on TV and he kept hanging around and watching as my sisters were too. I was expecting him to leave the room but didn't. After he broke my record in 64, I remember sitting around the living room watching these groups and it was no problem with mom and dad even when the music was changing. I didn't know when I watched The Doors play Light my Fire on ES nor anyone else knew that Morrison was supposed to change the words until I saw the Doors movie! Man I must have heard the song 100 times before that and no one had any problem with the words but ES. They got a bad rap on that by not being able to appear on the show again. But that was ok. The Smothers Brothers aways had good groups at that time that aired.
I finally got to see Steppenwolf in concert for First time but I have always loved their music First time Oklahoma City with Lynard Skynard it was Awesome Great and I will never forget and I am 58 this year 2017 and John Kay voice was Awesome .......
Living now and the music is till here for you and all. I was born 1970. But,still sample and enjoy must music here and far.You can be 100 and still not have a good ear like you have.Relax,enjoy......it's your music too.
Shame that the original band is no longer with him - - - but these guys carry the load with excellence~and I like his vocals - rich and full bodied with vibrato when needed ~!
He came with the band too Long Beach Naval Base, before they closed it down. He and the band were signing anything, and selling their newest CD. This was the early 90s. Got a chance to talk to John. He was a very cool, likeable, humble guy.
I was in the warmup band for them at the Music Factory in Greenville, N.C. in May of 1971, after the "Monster" album came out. They were actually very, very cool, it was still the original band. Goldie McJohn, the original organist, let our organist use his Hammond B-3 and Leslie speaker, which sounded amazing, and he has not forgotten that yet! I played on 2 shows in 1980 at the Agora Ballroom in Tampa, Fl., with "John Kay and Steppenwolf", I think there was probably some legal stuff going on about the use of the word "Steppenwolf" as the sole title of the band at that time, but, just like here, the band was excellent, and again, everyone was very nice. So cool to get to play with your idols.
sings it and performs it better than in 1969. He is alive and well in the Nashville area. I actually saw him in the produce area of the same store, and was compelled just to give him a "Hay, thanks man for being part of my life."
+uselessjoe I bet he was really cool about it too. I know a couple of people who have met him and he came across as being very laid back and appreciative of their comments to him. Seen him in numerous interviews and he always came across, to me anyways, as very approachable and down to earth.
I don't hear singing. I just hear speaking/vocalizing the lyrics. He's no Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Layne Staley, or Chris Cornell - that's for sure.
srujan00 stop comparing classic rock artists, they're all great. Just because led zeppelin is more mainstream doesn't mean they're better. Rock and roll isn't a war, don't divide them
This is the song which makes me remember my first girlfriend in 1968-1969 in HS. We would listen to it going to the beaches in LA. Great memories until we broke up....:)
i grew up listening to this song riding around in my dad's el camino as a little girl (I'm 32 now). i was raised on 50s, 60s + 70s oldies almost exclusively and i can with say with confidence that they do not make music this good anymore.
Goldie was great on original. I loved that sound. Equipment was different back then. Seems that some bands back then can't duplicate their own stuff. One example is the Guess who on No Time. Here's a live performance link that has a few flaws but I'd rather watch this one live. ruclips.net/video/HOTpwEHf1rk/видео.html
My first concert in February 1971 was Steppin 🐺 at Cherry Hill Arena, Cherry Hill, New Jersey. I was 16 then. Now I'm 61 as of now. May 2016. Living in Massachusetts now. Great memory anyway.
Saw Steppenwolf @ the Cherry Hill Arena, Cherry Hill, NJ in 1968 when I was 13! The ticket cost $ 3.50! Boy times have changed. King Crimson backed them up. Greg Lake played bass with KC then. Didn't even know who Crimson was at the time. First time I ever saw or heard a mellotron. I think Steppenwolf was touring the 2nd album and Crimson was touring 'In the Court of the Crimson King' They did '21st Century Schizoid Man' They blew me away! I'll never forget it! Y'all not familiar with Crimson it's worth your time to check them out, especially early Crimson! Boy, you sure don't hear music live like this anymore!
John is very underrated as a rock n roll frontman, in my opinion. Not just a terrific singer and guitar player, but had great stage presence and showmanship.
I saw Steppenwolf headline in 1972 at a Ice Arena in Illinois, RUSH was filling in for Canned Heat. RUSH ATE the show alive. I enjoyed John Kay's show, but honestly Rush played their entire first album that night and I was paralyzed by their performance. I though God himself sat in on drums for this Canadian band we all BOO-ed before they played and as they came out. We MADE them do an encore!! What a night. Ahhhh memories. Peace.
I'm 70 now and still love this song!!!!!
59 here lol
The song is one of my rock greats. Not much for showmanship though 😏
Stuck in my Dad's ball sack ...😮

srujan00 stop comparing classic rock artists, they're all great. Just because led zeppelin is more mainstream doesn't mean they're better. Rock and roll isn't a war, don't divide them
Big yes shout out to my Canadian band..so proud of them..🇨🇦
This is the song which makes me remember my first girlfriend in 1968-1969 in HS. We would listen to it going to the beaches in LA. Great memories until we broke up....:)
Steppenwolf for Hall of Fame !!
I love his voice, is divine!! he is the best singer.
i grew up listening to this song riding around in my dad's el camino as a little girl (I'm 32 now). i was raised on 50s, 60s + 70s oldies almost exclusively and i can with say with confidence that they do not make music this good anymore.
crystal nicole Same here - what a great time to be alive on this earth!👍🏻 🎶
still better than most singers today! brilliant!
Yes, 70s were the best 💯
@@deborahrowland4264 it was late 60's... Long live the 60's
@@Gas2311 probably means that we're both older than we want to be . . .
RIP...Goldy McJohn, your keyboard work was magical indeed!
That organ is fantastic wow. Fun performance to watch. I just love how they time the verse coming back from the solo
There will never be, in my humble opinion, another 60s. 55 years later, I still luv this stuff.
My first concert in February 1971 was Steppin 🐺 at Cherry Hill Arena, Cherry Hill, New Jersey. I was 16 then. Now I'm 61 as of now. May 2016. Living in Massachusetts now. Great memory anyway.
me 66 like steppenwolf je suis français ! i see stepp in 69 in paris i was young!but like again!
Oh my! That lineup would have been amazing.
MICHAEL Delude I saw many great concerts at the old Cherry Hill Arena.... wonderful memories.
The 90's was still a great era for music!
John is very underrated as a rock n roll frontman, in my opinion. Not just a terrific singer and guitar player, but had great stage presence and showmanship.
Kick ass SPEPPENWOLF! STILL Rocking love it!
still exciting, ...and it's been a long time. Thank you, Mr Kay!
Saw them live in the Auditorium Theater Chicago . Many years a go . Great show !
Great song, loved playing it in 1969. Our singer later became manager for a major car company. Weird!
Peace.
They were cutting edge. One of the great dance/ rock out songs.
Fecking awesome !!, my favourite Wolf song !!!
that 1 song is a billion dollar song i hope, and born to be wild , biker anthem.
My all-time favorite song!
Excellent. Bravo. How many memories! Steppenwolf 😊
