  • Apparently, even if you've lived somewhere for 4 years, there can still always be something new to learn. Lucas was procrastinating getting more gas for our car, Carla, when he noticed this interesting behavior of German gas prices!
This definitely cannot happen in the USA, so we were both rather shocked!

The price shown on the billboard is for information only. Valid for the actual sale is the price shown directly at the pump. Sometimes these may vary for example due to transmission delays when the price is changing.

In the evening, though, gas up before 10pm because the prices go back up to normal prices after that. It’s not very consistent, though, so it’s still best to check apps.

The strongly fluctuating prices within a day actually only really picked up speed since the display boards were digitized and the gas station tenants did not have to climb up their price mast every time to change the price tags manually. In the case of gas station chains, even the associated groups are now making the changes remotely. There are apps for mobile phones that show you the best prices for gas stations in a desired radius.

Some years ago I was tanking gas, then I went in the shop to pay my bill, and when I came back I noticed that the price had been reduced by 5 cents per liter. I looked at my bill and I had paid the old price before it was reduced. That was on a Monday morning when I was commuting to work. Had I come 5 minutes later I would have paid the reduced price.

You just haven‘t noticed. These changes have been occurring for as long as I have been driving in Germany (over 20 years now). People even have their theories about the best time of the day and the best day for the lowest prices. I have heard (although this may be a conspiracy theory) that the major chains in any case have their totems and pumps computerized; as soon as demand starts to rise at a station, the prices start to inch up and vice-versa. And yes, the prices can vary greatly in different parts of the same city at the same time of day. I have frequently noticed a big difference when driving from the east to the west of Hamburg (and I‘m talking about within 20 minutes). Prices in my part of town are generally higher.
More than once, I have seen low(er) prices when on my way to an appointment, and when I drive past two hours later, the prices have risen by as much as 10 cents a liter.
I highly recommend an app for fuel prices. They are a great help.

Wow, that's actually quite usefull to know! Gas is Germany is already dirt-cheap, but I'll remember this the next time I'm getting gas in Germany to make shure its at the end of the day.

We tend to disagree, for us, it is four times more expensive than gas in the US!

Germany should join the union of Russia and Belarus, then their gas prices will be the same as the average for Russia.
