Not quite. This device is overpriced at anything above USD $60. Remember there's still the Anbernic RG-353m, which is a much better "mini-console" overall, and that should be purchased below USD $80. And when stepping up once more, at USD $100 we have the Retroid Pocket 2S. Then at USD $120 it should be the Retroid Pocket 3+. Then at USD $140 it's the Retroid Pocket 4. The only step above that is the Retroid Pocket 4+ which comes in at a USD $200 price. These are all consoles in the "pocketable" category. There is a smaller "keychain" category. And a larger "portable" category. And then the "non-portable" category afterwards.
I just thought I'd let you know but there's also the RG35XX H, which has just been announced by Anbernic and is due out very soon. It's a horizontal version of this (PSP style) only with additional dual thumbsticks. Hardware/spec wise it's identical, however it's price is unknown at the moment. Anyone wishing for those additional thumbsticks or those that just prefer horizontal handhelds, would just be better off holding out and waiting 2 to 3 weeks longer for the RG35XX H.
Great review! Definitely agree that the community and devs are what make the experience with this device much more usuable and better overall, hopefully anbernic gets the message sooner than later, they really have a good device and build for the price range it is in! 🤔💭 💡
I love it, I think they should make one that is just a tiny bit taller and wider, with a bit more power, and it be perfect, and HDMI for TV so we can use PS4 controller.
Black Seraph posted last night that he's had pneumonia and that's why updates to GarlicOS 2.0 have been non-existent. That being said, Anbernic has come out with some updates since release. This last update/upgrade brings 2 versions of the OS. One version is a single SD card configuration and the other is a 2 SD card configuration where roms are read from TF2. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but it's on my list for today since I'm home alone. I really wish they'd get OTA updates working. It's a pain to flash a new image and reconfigure everything every time there's an OS update. That being said, the hardware is quite impressive. I really like the form factor and can't wait to see what the future holds for this machine. The potential is there, we just need the software to catch up to it.
Are there PDF files on both for download? Is there an iso for the 16gb micro SD card that has the emulation. Reason I ask is the micro SD cards they give aren't name brand and want to upgrade both micro SD cards. Look forward to your response.

Honestly, it could be the best budget if it would cost ~$45 with delivery. For $64+whatever delivery cost (10-15?) - not so much. I want to see better battery in these handhelds and, if possible, less PWM noise from screen. Anbernic is way better than Miyoo devices in terms of build quality (just compare PCB and it's obvious), but for now 35XX+ is a hard skip.
Depends where you get it from, some places offer free shipping. If you're going to pay that much for shipping you might as well get the 353v. I got my 353v from Temu for $103 with shipping.
Even so the $80 price range for what you’re getting is damn near solid. You can easily spend $1000 on the steam deck and emulate that up while also having portable HDR graphic games from Steam etc. ya know?!
@@alz397 R36S does the same thing as 35XX+ for only 30$ (with the minor downside of having slightly worse performance in select N64 titles and cheaper build). I don't see the reason for overpaying 100$ for retro console, because in this hobby "next best thing" gets released while previous ordered one is still on its way from China. It's endless cycle of buying-setting up-getting rid of.
You mentioned garlic OS I’ve been trying to figure it out. I can only download one file it it’s SD one I cannot download SD2 folder do I need both folders or just one?🤔
If you dont have base version is worth it, its already some time out and custom OS are slowly getting there, like batocera, is curtently quite usable now on its beta phase im loving tgis little device, you will have a bit of an extra being able to play some dremcast etc, but if you dont care about a bit of extra performance (only use for snes, nes ps1 etc) bluetooth and wifi (might not work very well depending on your hardware and OS) then saving sokembucks with base model might be ok, personally I think the plus is the way to go.
I would be happy to see the Miyoo Mini news covered too (with Onion, Allium, Koriki, MinUI) as this community is enormous and entirely open source (in contrast to anbernic rg35 world) 😉
My RG353VS is running ArkOS, which is Open Source. I sold my RG35XX that was running the latest GalricOS 1, which is also Open Source. I'm not sure why you think the Anbernic devices aren't supported by Open Source. Am I missing something?
@@norezplaysgames Everybody is thinking that but it's not the case at all : Garlic is a close source project. @@SchmurtzAlex Interesting. If someone requests the source code that is covered under the GPL, he has to give it to them. Anything under a proprietary license he doesn't have to. @@norezplaysgames You're right and you can ask for Retroarch source for example... You'll have nothing. Not really a problem for me but I think that the community who gave money for this project should know it ;)
This is an odd review. You made a direct comparison to the rg353v which pretty much has just about everything you found lacking in the xx plus yet you said you would go with the xx plus anyway? Also, the 353v has a dual os so whatever doesn't run great on the Linux side it's likely to run better on the android side or vice-versa... Also, the 353v can run DS games cause of the touchscreen which the xx plus doesn't have. Also, the 353v tends to come with ArkOS now which a lot of people prefer over onion. Granted, the 353v cost about $40 more but it's worth it in my book. And with all the new devices that anbernic keeps releasing it's bound to be discounted close to the price of the xx plus.... Sidenote - you showed it came with a 64gb SD card and 128gb yet the games were on the 64gb so what was on the 128gb card, the os? Seems a bit backwards to me.🤔
Yes. I don't get it. Why all the hype about the plus when you can buy the excellent RG353VS or V. These have a great operating system, reasonable power and dual joysticks. I also have the RG36s which has an easy to use operating system and reasonable power.
An upgrade from what? If you have the 35XX and you're enjoying it, I would say no. These devices are only worth the upgrade if they support games you can't play on your current device. And, you actually want to play those games. Otherwise, enjoy what you have and save your cash!
I'm surprised Nintendo don't go back to revisit the Gameboy for hardware. I bet they'll really nail portable gaming down. Black and white E-ink display, USB C capable, Bluetooth headphone support, and wireless multiplayer, a new eshop for Gameboy downloads. With that power saving E-ink display and low pologon counts, l they could really optimise the system so that it lasts at least 7 to 14 days or more on a single charge.
It's amazing just how spoiled rotten people are nowadays....I remember in the early 80s spending a small fortune on consoles playing pong......so $65 dollars is jump change for just how much you get today

It's a great system, but not really worth it if you already have the original. The improvements are great specs wise, but, fundamentally, they make very little to no real difference in playing the games the system is designed for, which are mainly GBA and other 2D systems. I wouldn't want to play N64 or Dreamcast on a system without an analog stick.
It is definitely a worthwhile upgrade, hardware wise and value if it fits within the use case that somebody might have. Never buy Amazon basics as they have been shown to be very cheap things that come with huge mark-ups (a rip off), so save yourself a good 60% and shop around. 3rd party OS's will improve the 'flashy' elements and no doubt, some functionality. When you are using patently pirated content then you can't really complain if some controls have not been configured to your liking. That would be like stealing a car and then complaining that it didn't have enough petrol to get anywhere.
It's a small boost over the original, but yeah if you have the original already it's not as useful. But if you're using something much weaker it's a better upgrade. Also consider that they may be running into issues buying the old components and decided to just upgrade while they sell through the old stock of the previous version.
Weeeellllll this is what you get when these devices are made on the cheap...Terrible operating systems, longer boot times to boot the software itself, configurations are not great, etc.

If Anbernic commissioned someone like Black Seraph, I think the 35XX Plus would DOMINATE in this price bracket.

The RG353V and VS both fit into this category, except for the "wider" part. They're more expensive, but not by much, especially the VS.
I only want it for gameboy colour and advance games anyways so I’m not worried about it running the more advanced consoles that great.
