    Relating to training light vs heavy - Me at 50 years old and doing lighter weight for more reps to failure, have gained more muscle than heavier weight/low reps. I don't have near the base muscle of a bodybuilder (I'm 6 ft/205 lbs/10% bf), so a bodybuilder may respond differently. But I'm enjoying the ride of slow and steady gains without any injuries. After running a gym for the last 5 yrs, it's my opinion that no one system is better than the other. The 2 most jacked members I have train completely different. One is in there for 3 to 4 hours as he is a day trader and it's his social time...its his Cheers. He rarely lifts heavy and does a shit ton of volume. The other is a hard working, union plumber who is in and out in 45 or less every time, training with low volume to failure. To make things more contradictory, the dude training to failure with heavy ass weight is the one with the round, round muscle and flowing physique while the dude doing all the pump work has the rugged, Branch Warren type build. Genetics trump all I guess.

    Fouad - Nick are you there, you look paralysed 😂😂
    I don’t buy it, too many factors go into building muscle for me. For a study like this to be accurate everyone would need to be on a set diet, training program, same cycle, same rest and sleep times and external stress factors.
    I think there’s too many fundamentals of building muscle to isolate which is nearly impossible and the elephant in the room is all the studies are done on joe average natural athletes.

      Please do not hate me for my comment. Fouad did not exactly rephrase Brad´s Schoenfeld´s Studies, which might have caused confusion. Brad never wrote anything about 100 reps in a set. 35 reps at max. Limiting factor would be lactic acid. His studies however in my opinion have debunked the myth that there are "optimal" rep ranges, which is in fact individual, even different from bodypart to bodypart. Recommending someone to always have 8-12 reps for all bodyparts is in fact questionable. Trying different intervalls (6 reps, 10 reps and 20 reps) in a set and observing the results might be the way to go. @Jamie you are right. But Brad has always pointed out the same thing 😉. As a fan of JP I really love to see that there are also different rep ranges between the working set and the backoff set in the programs I know from JP. So fundamentally these studies are practically implemented already, even if there was a different intention before. Love both your contents. Greets from Germany ✌

    • @JamieChristianTheGiant
      @JamieChristianTheGiant 3 года назад +3

      @@MP-mz7un ah appreciate that man, I thought the same tbh that we were already putting this into practice in the sense we fail at different rep ranges, I agree fully that failure is failure but weight must be enough to stimulate the mechanical tension part enough for the muscle to fail before the lactic acid get's you like you touch on there :)

    The application of what Brad was saying is that the mechanical tension ultimately ends up being similar if you’re doing more reps with less weight. Proximity to failure is important to properly stimulate the muscle to grow. There is also a presumed minimum stimulus as far as effort, so 100 reps of one plate probably would build about as much muscle as walking uphill or something due to the lack of tension put on the muscle. The good thing about this is training in both capacities is beneficial for hypertrophy, so sometimes it’s a good idea to spare the joints and other parts of the body the heavy load by using less weight but still approaching failure.

    regarding the first question. no not the same type of hypertrophy. the science of that question is pretty simple. there is a difference between exhausting the muscle from its energy stores and overloading the muscle to failure. when doing heavy weight you are utilizing more muscle fibers. if you do 50lbs shoulder press you aren't using all of your recourses. (muscle) because it's not needed. when you do 100lbs dumbbells you have more activation.

    • @DANIELGARCIA-qe5oz
      @DANIELGARCIA-qe5oz 3 года назад +2

      Doing both (higher reps/lower reps) activates more muscle fibers because you’re activating the 2 types (fast twitch and slow twitch). That’s what Dr Schoenfeld was referring to. You do more activation by mixing it up. Higher reps doesn’t mean you have to hit 100 reps but the work is getting done in similar fashion (higher/lower reps) as you get closer to muscle failure. 15/20 reps is probably more than enough to activate the slow twitch muscle fibers.
