    Their reason for charging money Nintendo gave for this is the amount of effort being put into it. If that's the case, the bare minimum is putting in credits for the people that put in that effort. Gross.

      agreed, thats exactly what i’m thinking!! “it’s not a game it’s a demo” but why can’t it be? There are many options for fun ways to provide information, and navigating a Best Buy (in terms of aesthetics and vibe) isn’t one of them. Wii sports to some people is considered to be like a tech demo, and it’s a great game.

      the popularity of Netpass on modded 3ds's is a testament to how beloved this feature is. even though im not walking past the people ive received in my mii plaza, its still so much fun gathering these little insights from strangers like what theyre playing and what they have to say. i'd love if nintendo brought it back or did something similar, but with how unportable (compared to the 3ds, especially the first version, which can just fit in your pocket) the switch consoles are, i doubt they ever will :(

    I was one of the few families with a Wii U. My family played Nintendo Land for at least 20 hrs. Not to mention the times that my sister and I had spent alone. We bought it as a game, and it felt like a game. I didn’t realize it was supposed to showcase anything until you mentioned it in the video. Welcome Tour doesn’t even try to pretend it’s a game.

      i never had a wii u, but i did have a wii and it never really fully set in that wii sports is essentially a tech demo or showcase of its wii remote until just now LOL. to me, it was always just a fun, simple game

    • @ZaCloud-Animations___she-her
      @ZaCloud-Animations___she-her 8 months ago +50

      @aliciles That was why Reggie worked hard to convince the big shots to include Wii Sports with the console (which they originally were VERY much against), cuz he saw it as a very natural opportunity for people to learn about the console's capabilities, while at the same time enjoying it as a game. He saw that as the best way to showcase the console, & make sure everyone who got one could experience that sort of 'training' that would prepare them for other games.
      Reggie was a big part of the heartfelt image of Nintendo, because HE went heart-first into the job.
      Doug Bowser meanwhile came from a crooked game company & his specialty was making money through anti-consumer means. And so of course, that's what fans are getting.

      From what I've heard, Nintendo is paranoid about other companies offering their employees better job deals & snatching them away. So that's why they don't let them reveal their identities. Same with several game studios, especially in the older days.

      Big companies want us to get less social nowadays, it seems. Cuz when we feel a sense of society with fellow human beings, we're too likely to band together & demand better treatment & product quality/affordability. Better for them if we all just isolate & mindlessly consume in our own little space, forgetting social bonds & accepting worsening situations, so they can keep cutting corners. :(

    That rant at the end resonated with me a lot. I would have traded welcome tour in a heartbeat if we got a HOME Menu on the same level as the Wii and the 3DS. (I would include the Wii U but as much as I love the thing it's too slow. But it has a soul so I can't hate it.)
    Man. Nintendo used to go all out with their menus and their built in software. The technozen ambience was genuinely so full of life and I miss it so much. I miss when they were different from everyone else. Like, I'm not gonna pretend that the Iwata era was perfect cause it was far from it, but I felt like I belonged. In the dark times of the Wii U era, having something like miiverse to connect Nintendo fans was so special.
    I'm not the biggest fan of modern Nintendo, but I'm grateful for the good games that they still put out. The switch 2 fixed a lot of issues with the original switch while ignoring some, and those small issues that they chose to ignore (little personality being the biggest one) hurt me a bit, because these are things that the old Nintendo wouldn't ignore. Like no themes after 8 years? No mii maker music? No HOME menu ambience? No eshop music? No proper activity log? It's genuinely a damn shame because most people will consider this very small in the grand scheme of things, but it's genuinely such an un-Nintendo thing for them to not care about.
    I mean, is it truly too much to ask for my handheld to feel like, I dunno, MY handheld? Is it truly too much to ask for my system menu to be up to the standards that Nintendo themselves set before? I don't really think so.

    • @parchmentengineer8169
      @parchmentengineer8169 8 months ago +47

      This. 100%. It's especially sad for me because I do have another handheld, an indie console called the Playdate, and it 100% has that charm that Nintendo has been lacking over the past few years. New games come in little gift boxes that have a unique unwrapping animation, the settings submenus are represented by bundles of wires and random doodads that unfurl as you go deeper into the menus, and every single game is encouraged to have a unique launch animation.
      It makes me wish Nintendo would go back into putting the fun into games and actually caring about the user experience and the UI especially, instead of this aesthetically pleasing but ultimately soulless corporate artstyle they're leaning towards more and more.

      And the battery issue that's causing people's batteries to swell. Didn't fix that either.

    • @SerenadeURA
      @SerenadeURA 8 months ago +7

      @shlingusdingus4174 it's a tall order to ask a video game company to solve a problem that rechargeable batteries have as a result of real life physics just doing that. Its basically entirely random when and if a rechargeable is going to turn into a dangerous pillow.

    • @shlingusdingus4174
      @shlingusdingus4174 8 months ago +12

      @SerenadeURA I'd be willing to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt with that, but saying that a battery for a product they made is "too unpredictable" to fix seems ridiculous. They had years to iron out these issues before launch, physics or not, and still got blindsided. These issues are arising only twelve days after launch, not two months, or years. It's unacceptable. And at this point, knowing that they STILL didn't fix joy con drift, I wouldn't be surprised if they were aware about the battery issues and released it regardless. As OP said, probably to boost sales, as a bloated battery would force people to buy another console or have it fixed.

    • @SerenadeURA
      @SerenadeURA 8 months ago +6

      @shlingusdingus4174 If they shipped them out with a bloated battery then yeah its willful ignorance (malicious) but if they leave the factory/QC and the battery inflates in transit/storage then that's just basically a force of nature, might as well blame them for stock being destroyed in a natural disaster.
      You can't "iron out" inflating batteries is what I'm saying. Most people agree that lithium batteries are gonna serve you for a decade and then they're gonna inflate. If you get lucky and they last for 15-20 years, great. My GBA SP battery from 2003 inflated earlier this year, sad to see him go. Meanwhile, my HP laptop battery from 2016 also inflated this year. My camera drone batteries from 2021 inflated last year. My 3DS battery from 2015 inflated in 2017, but my first 3DS (from launch) is still fine. Its all unfortunately entirely random.
      Like if this is actually all about the stick drift, yeah, they could have done basically anything about that, but its odd to bring up something effectively uncontrollable.

    • @shlingusdingus4174
      @shlingusdingus4174 8 months ago

      @SerenadeURA I'm bringing it up because it's another slap to the face for consumers. The Switch 2 isn't cheap, nor is it a good console. It's overpriced, has subpar specs, barely anything to play on launch that isn't 80 dollars and is already showing multiple performance and hardware issues not even two weeks after its release, at least in the US.
      Joy con drift, battery bloat, battery charge not properly being reflected and needing to be "retrained" or outright replaced, certain games causing the Switch's screen to flash, rendering certain games, like Pikmin, difficult or impossible to play, and of course, some games being entirely unplayable due to crashes on launch. I'm not simply speaking about one issue, which I should have clarified from the beginning. I'm speaking from a place of outrage at the state of this console.
      Some consumers have only had a Switch 2 for days and are experiencing these issues, and whether it is caused by unpredictable means or not, buying an expensive piece of hardware, only for it to have issues and become a hazard days after purchasing it is upsetting. Frankly, I'm tired of putting vast amounts of money into flawed products from reputable brands.

    I think it would've been fun if they borrowed a page from Astro Bot's Book, where it showed off the Switch 2's features by directly comparing them to features from their past consoles and peripherals and games they were significantly attached to. Hold a Joy Con sideways to compare it to the NES controller, and compare the range on the Joy Con to the N64's stick, and have the N64 Rumble pack show up and compare it's rudimentary rumble feature to the HD Rumble in a Star Fox short game. You could also have the N64 Expansion Pack show up to compare the Ram to the Switch 2. Then show off the Microphone in the Joy Con by playing a bit of Hey You Pikachu. Show how evolution of connecting two consoles starting with the GameBoy link cable. Bring back the comparison they made for the original Switch to the GameCube on console portability, as well as a nod to the Wavebird for wireless controllers (though you could also make that comparison in the NES era). Show the advantages of the Joy Cons by comparing them to the Wii Mote in a game that could make a nod to either Wii Sports or Skyward Sword. Even the Wii U can join in sense the Switch basically perfects a major appeal to the Wii U, being able to seamlessly take your game off the TV. But now without the draw back of needing the console to stream to the Gamepad, so you can take the Switch anywhere you want. You could also have a look back at the history of Nintendo's use of internet. Like the Super Famicom's Satellite accessory, the GameCube's Lan Adapter, Wii Online, that kind of thing. As well as other broader comparisons like how many pixels can be on screen on the NES-SNES (and GB and GBA) compared to Switch 2, or Polygons from the N64 and GameCube compared to Switch 2. And as you said, bring back the Mario 64 Head for the camera mini game. The Tee Ball was right there, they just needed to hit it.

I think the world we live in is just becoming more corporate and boring. Unique design and color has been replaced with uniformity, tight tolerances, and varying tones of gray. Nintendo is following suite with every other company out there and this will just be the MO moving forward.
    Only time will tell what Nintendo will do with the Switch 2 and any possible successor.

      @SeddyAm You know, I actually thought of that right after writing my comment. It looks like it was doing these things:
      - Try to make 3rd party devs, players, and investors see the unique value in the Switch 2
      - Try to inspire 3rd party devs to actually use the unique features of the Switch 2 in creative ways, instead of just porting games to it
      - Get players (and 3rd party devs to a lesser extent) to buy more accessories

    • @SeddyAm

      @inkajoo The flaw and problem for the game was the localization made it sound like a tech demo "game" and someone says that the og japanese was called switch 2 museum to show case the capabilities and what does it do.

    Thank you for the lowdown on this game! The lack of credits is really wild… Kit and Krysta theorized there might be something behind the scenes at Nintendo where they’re trying to not… name teams/names?
    This came up when they were talking about the upcoming Donkey Kong game and how Nintendo hadn’t said what team is behind it/actively dodged the question (idk if they’ve since come out and said the dev team). Kit theorized the reason might be that they don’t want the dev team to become an indicator of the game/for the consumer to make certain assumptions, like Mario Odyssey being made in house versus Princess Peach Showtime being made by a third party. But it’s all conjecture.
    Them not including a credits list here made me think of it again though, and it’s sad.

      Not that the older Nintendo was that much better either.
      Most of you probably don't know/remember, but back when stores like Blockbuster existed in which you could rent games for a while, Nintendo did all they could to kill that service. They only got away with it in Japan, that's why there it's basically illegal to rent a lot of stuff.
      They also tried the same with cheat devices like the GameGenie. Again, only successful in their country, that's why cheating/modding games is illegal there.
      Nintendo never was good. They just weren't as evil as they are now.

    any nintendo console ive ever enjoyed had a fun gimmick, the switch 1 fully just seemed like a tablet with controllers slapped on and i the only times ive ever thought "maybe having a switch would be nice" were while watching a trailer for a game and then fully forgetting about it a few hours later lmao. you cant get me nintendo! i have mario kart for the gba, the wii and the ds already! i can already make luigi go nyoom any time i want anywhere i want!

    It feels kinda narcissistic. "Marvel at our brilliance while we suck drain your wallet". Ok, Nintendo, you do you. I'm out.

    The fact that the blue and orange accents on the tablet where the joycons dock are STICKERS than need to be removed if you need to fix anything makes the gray mass even more depressing. The whimsy is gone.

    informative. knowledge trade; at about 5:35 ish you say "intensive purposes" that is not a phrase, what you're after is "intents and purposes". Used to make the mistake of saying nonsense out loud because I heard an idiom wrong too, haha.

      double knowledge barter: should be a colon at the start of your comment and not a semicolon. paying it forward, i have been saying “intensive purposes” for years and learned smth new just now

    To me, Welcome Tour is perfectly in line with what I've seen from a lot of Switch 2 owners: coping mechanisms. This massive ad doesn't introduce you to its console, it gives you reassurance that this thing is indeed worth its ridiculous asking price.
    At the same time, I'm also not surprised that THIS is Nintendo's best response to Astro's Playroom. Nintendo is kinda losing its grip with tight and unique design principles. Everything is muted and lifeless, ideas follow trends instead of creativity, and of course, it's all sold at an unreasonable premium. Nintendo used to be an innovator, a trailblazer, and a foundation of joy. But because money talks, their newer stuff smells like Activision, Konami, and Ubisoft, instead. I'm just waiting for MKW to introduce in-game purchases for costumes and vehicle parts.

    This whole "game", from what I've seen, is a great demonstration of Nintendo as a company and their design principles: maximum handholding, completely gated and controlled progression, and everything explained to a nauseatingly extraneous degree. It's like they took the tutorial of any Mario game, removed Mario and all the gameplay, and just released that as its own thing.

    Nintendo's reason for pricing this slop at $10? They "stressed how much work and care the development team put into it"
    And then they didn't include credits???

    Fun fact the sound from 15:47 traumatized me so much as a kid that I'd plug my ears and run out of the room every time I turned on the gamecube. Also I told my parents it didn't scare me anymore like 4 years ago and then played it and almost cried anyways LOL

    About the point about having the charm of the gamecube boot up things and the miis not selling the console, I agree this is true but I do feel like things like that contribute to the longevity of a console
