Excellent interview with a truly Exceptional leader. I well remember Tol Janeke jogging around Thornhill Air Force Base when he became OC Thornhill. Always in top form and encouraged a lot of other airmen to also keep fit. When Tol was in charge of any situation, Everything worked Beautifully! I was inspired by this man at that time. I was an engines techie back then, mid to late 70's.
My complete respect to GP CPT Tol . The blue jobs were the back bone of the war . Fantastic pilots and servicemen . Thank you sir for your service! Salute ! Another great interview thanks to Hannes and John yet again an interesting insight ! 👌🏻👍👏👏👏👏
Well done Tol and the team, Hannes and John. It was a delightful interview plugging an important piece of the Rhodesian Airforce history. I hope there is more to come.
Salute Ishe....Thanks for sharing and again thanks to Hannes and John. I had the privilege of working with and befriended a number of your men and SAAF guys after the war (Mad Mike Mulligan being one) You were truly a well respected Boss.
Great to hear the story on Blake Flemington’s ordeal with the Canberra tucked behind, as I have heard the same story from Blake and there was something about the navigation using the wrong heading , went like ‘waarheen gaan julle?’ And then a ‘nie op daai koers nie’. I believe Blake still lives in Palmerston North NZ.
The name Gaunt - now there's a name from the past, his sons and I went to the same high school in Salisbury. They recounted stories of the strict discipline enforced at home...
These interviews are important to document the bush wars, I never heard much about the conflict here in the UK just small snipits of some of the opps that included guys from the regiment.
Whenever I go into a second hand book shop, I always ask, mainly for my own amusement, if they’ve got anything on the African Bush Wars. Invariably I regarded with a quizzical look, and a reply along the lines of ‘sounds quite specialist. Might be something in the military history section’. Maybe I’ll get lucky one day!😂
It is a shame that America failed Rhodesia and South Africa in fellowship. We fought communism amongst opportunistic low peoples. We would have had the hearts and minds of our fellow frontiersman. 20 years and trillions of dollars could have helped the continent aye.
My records indicate that In all we lost just over 40 aircraft of all types on operational flights. Not all were due to enemy fire as accidents at low level, and a few mechanical failures contributed to the losses. Tol
Really enjoyed the chat. Salute you, Sir.

Thanks Hal. It was the year I ran Comrades marathon. During the war I reckoned it would be wise to be a thin, fast- moving target.
Another great account from a very admirable man. Wow, we had the best of the best.
As a young Lieutenant in 1975, I met Tol, then a Wingco, when he attended the SAAF Staff Course. A real gentleman, with a great sense of humour.
