I've watched Shango066 for years and never commented. I feel like I am sitting with a doctor during an examination of a subject and enjoy it immensely. The show is about the radios and TVs and not about his face or superlab. The added wit and the road adventures are all a positive plus. The pace is perfect for relaxation and I feel as though I am sitting with a friend. The knowledge base here is vast, and his true appreciation for electronics is overwhelming. If it isn't enough to make a cat purr, it definitely won't make one growl. Meow!
Former airplane owner: Heard your comment about leaded avgas. After more than two decades we recently got an unleaded 100 octane gas approved. The impact on your aircraft noise is going to depend on how much more expensive it is than the leaded stuff.
@@PapiDoesIt that’s my concern, the lead in it is to provide protection a cushion, and I think there’s more too it I’m no plan expert by no means but I know on those types of aircraft the air fuel ratio is pretty critical, but what I’m not sure of is if the mixture is the same as that of a vehicle which is 14.5 if I recall correctly. If it isn’t 14.5 and let’s say they are running leaner than that that’s a lot of heat!
Only recently discovered this channel. Watching you repair and resurrect these old valve tv's and radios. Brings happy memories back to me of watching my late dad repairing these sets for people when I was young. He did progress to the solid state stuff but always admitted to having a passion for the valve stuff.
I Love people who work on old technology - It brings back so many memories I became a service engineer just as valves were leaving. Where I lived not far from the Air Force Base, when we watched American movies, like Star Trek and Time Tunnel, we turned the TV Volume down, and tuned to FM on the Radio to get it in English
Cool!! I have built the AES battery eliminator kit back in the late '80s or so, and have used it to power several types of battery tube radios, including an Atwater Kent 20C. It is a great kit, I still have it but need to change the LM317 regulator for the "A" supply because one of the leads broke off it while moving! I always think these old personal portable tube radios are cool, especially "subminiature" ones, but also the regular miniature tube ones as well as larger earlier "suitcase" type with the larger octal tubes!
Oh! Also, I have that same "Harpers" radio, which the name plate had come off of mine so now I have an idea of the brand name now! Japanese, and mine has unfortunately a big piece of plastic missing from the back cover.
Chinese counterfeit parts are a plague. I bought many Toshiba and Motorola audio output transistors online. All were counterfeit. Never again. I since bought them only at well known distributors. They were supposed to be 200W RMS but the die inside the plastic casings were as small and even smaller than the one you'll find in a BD 139/ TO-220 types. There's also many counterfeit capacitors as well on the market. When the price is too good to be true, that's because it isn't. I'm glad you address it! Those are shyte.. I'm with you on the "You've Got This" crap. They pop up with these little sayings out of nowhere and then everybody is using it, makes the antennas go up when I notice that stuff.... I was talking to a customer service guy the other day and he said "I know that's not the outcome either one of us wanted" oh make me vomit. Lots of fakeness out there!
I thought the Caltrans testing lady left the air, unless this was recorded a few months ago, But if this is newer video, then can I suggest doing a transmitter hunt for the source of the Caltrans testing lady. I'll bet the transmitter is on the side of the road right near a major road or interstate. The antenna is usually fiberglass white and a bit taller than a Solarcon A-99 CB antenna
Interesting old radios. According to Radio Museum, the GE was made in 1954 and the Harpers was made in 1960. Their time was short. I got my first portable radio in the late 50s, and it had transistors. Same 9 volt battery that is still commonly used. Tubes were still used in table radios into the 60s, because I bought one in 1963 when I went off to college.
had a vintage 2001 kreisen Glass LED display, it was 47 volts, it's off-campus power supply melted it's own connections, one could fry an egg on it~ thems was the good ole days

That’s a great collection of radios. I hope 🤞 they all have a dial cord diagram in the back of them. Battery tube type radios seem very rare to come by at any yard sales. I’d probably run 🏃♀️ these on a 12 volt car battery, since it would seem the most sustainable source. Your friend, Jeff.

Hello Shango I want to share my experience with an eight track player I just repaired. I know it has no relavence to this video but its about an old audio amplifier that has crackling sound in one channel. At first I thought it was a bad germanium transistor but before I changed it I shorted the input leads going to the head on that channel and the crackling stopped. This amplifier uses PNP germanium transistors and instead of using ground for the head coax wire shield it uses the negative hot wire which is about twelve volts potential from ground. The head case is ground and what was happening was there was moisture on the phenolic insulator that holds the head leads and making high resistance leakage on the sensitive input lead. I took my heat gun and boiled away and dried out the insulator and no more crackling

I have a clear memory of B batteries, when I was a little kid in the 60's, I ran my little fingers across the battery poles of a B battery I saw for sale in a department store. It burned the memory into my brain.
I have that same power supply. I built it about 25 years ago. I use it with my old Atwater Kent Model 20 and 35. I did replace the heat sink with a heat sink with a fan as it seemed to get very hot.
On the first radio you connected the negative of the B supply to the ground of the A supply. Assuming the standard circuit this is improper. The B- input goes through a resistor which provides cathode bias for the output tube.

Please do a repair video on the Harpers Personal tube radio, I would love to hear that radio play. Not everyday you see a portable tube radio that small, I have GE transistor radios bigger than that. As usual Japanese made tube radios used leaky paper caps. I repaired one that had all the leak (beaky) Caps in one package and the plastic case breakage was worse than the GE you have there. I liked seeing the GE Tube radio working.
I have a red GE, same model. I use 8 9v's in series, and two D cells for power. It eats the D's, even alkalines fast, but the B battery lasts. My handle's pleatherette handle is peeling, but the case is not chewed. It listens to a 1 kw daytimer that plays oldies and local ads. At night, I like to open the back and barely see a bit of bulb glow. I show it to youngsters, and they don't get it.
In the 1990's Antique Electronic Supply sold a kit to build that power supply. Mine has lasted for years. Later upgraded to an ARBE-III but the old breadboard one still works too..
Love the radios and power supply. I really dislike, "You got this!” And, "I got you!" I never considered these phrases originated in think tanks or board rooms. As far as use of these battery products I think the pace of advancement was quite rapid. Also the marketing probably hit many people convincing them they needed these portable radios since many prior to this would be line operated heater/radios.
I will sure enjoy the updates on Your Pakered Bell TV that you will soon put in to service 24/7. That will be cool to see. I hope it holds up Ok being its new old stock. I will be looking for the videos you will put ont on the set as weeks go by. The CRT should last a good long time being its very low hour & the rest of the TV as well. @@KennethScharf not necessarily, i'm in the UK and have some each 3V4/DL94 and 3S4/DL92 and theyre definitely beam tetrode construction, except one 3S4, branded as mazda 1P10, is truly pentode , i have a couple of DL33/3Q5 and DL35/1C5 , but cant remember, may vary depending on manufacturer, most ones here are of mullard/philips manufacture
Today is a great day testing. testing. This is only a test. I'm thinking of making the trip from Camarillo to Torrance just so I can hear that and get my groove on. Klinky dinkler the snorgle spoimler. At night I can get BLM radio, but fortunately at 1590 there's KABC. I built a 67.5v B battery eliminator I found online. I think from Phil's old radios. Costed like 10$ to make. Only downside is that it makes the chassis hot. But whatever. I know not to use it in the bathtub. Let me know if you are in the area, or going to a SCARS meet. I have a couple transistor radios I'd like to give you. I'll be at the one in Burbank next month.
The best years were when most products were made in Japan and Hong Kong! I bought my two sons a Sony transistor radio each 35 years ago and they still have them which were phenomenal DX AM radios even to this day!
@@LarryBlowers I left a longer explanation further up in the comments, but it's on 1610 KHz, and it's most likely either WPHJ962 or WQED842, both of which are in West Los Angeles, beside highways, roughly 10-15 miles (15-25 km) north of Shango. It's a highway advisory radio belonging to Caltrans, only they don't broadcast any useful information on it, just that audio test loop. The transmitters only run about 10 watts. The other description above tells exactly where those two radio transmitters are.
So, I have a Magnavox micromatic 64 Solid State Phonograph console. Shango Might like this, it was all working. and I believe he stylus and cartridge was/is the original Stock Stylus and cartridge. unfortunately, I am from Iowa. so, shipping the whole stereo console (Stereo-Phonic) ... would cost me a boat load. so.... Since I am planning on moving away from here soon, it could just go to the junk pile. 😥
If those tubes ever have to be replaced, look into 1Ж24Б and similar "rod" tubes, over here these military surplus tubes are often used to substitute the much more expensive American tubes which were imported back in the commie era for use in the locally produced portable tube radios. They also should be more efficient than the original tubes, at least in the RF portion of the circuit. Said tube is an RF pentode drawing just 13mA at 1.2V.
I just subscribed. I've worked on few tv's. He doesn't have tools I used . My favorite tool was a, 2lb. hammer and a chainsaw. Maybe he will obtain these special tool one day. All kidding aside I know nothing I have watched other channels similar to this one and this one is the one O chose to subscribe to. He tells it like it is. I admire that. What I find ironic is these old tube radios are almost just as hard on batteries as the latest dab plus digital radios we have here in Australia. I put a current meter on a digital radio and the current draw was between 200 and 300 miliamps.
It seems that in the 30's Emerson, a New York company, built radios only good enough for local stations. The product was marketed at NYC residents, where there were plenty of locals.
It would be interesting to know what the test station is all about. I imagine it would be government run or endorced as it would cost a fair bit of money to keep it powered up and running. The selectivity on the GE seems reasonably good, maybe a little alignment will help the sensitivity, but for an unrestored portable it seems to work ok. I guess people wouldn't use a battery radio for DXing really. With the little Japanese Harpers radio, it could be the person that sent it to you put the cardboard in place to help hold the tubes during transport. It likely didn't have cardboard from the factory.
Iv'e tried listening to it on some SDR's in the Los Angeles area and can't hear it on any of them. Also done some google searches but can't find anything on it.
That GE sounds pretty good. Too bad about the case damage. Maybe can be fixed. That battery eliminator is nice to have. Had an electronics magazine in the mid 70's that had plans for an eliminator to early battery radios. I've got a Zenith Wavemagnet portable that needs gone through. Case looks great except for the missing handle. This unit can also be plugged in and used without batteries. With silver/mica disease in the IF cans, what is the best way to get around that?
Yes, it's a Caltrans highway advisory radio on 1610 KHz, only Caltrans isn't airing any advisories, just that audio loop. No matter, because most people would just tune to KNX 1070 for traffic reports.
Thanks to Nick B. for a field report, correcting that this station is on 1700 KHz. It's most likely still another Caltrans station, WPET709, at Imperial Hwy and La Cienega Blvd, near L.A. International Airport (LAX). That's very close to Shango.
I bet Shango already has the diagnosis on the Harpers set pinpointed and ready for the next video on it- leaky paper coupling caps, especially between the volume control wiper and grid of 1U5 as well as between plate of 1U5 and grid of 3S4! Also the electrolytic is probably bad, causing the "squoaching" between stations!

Lead occurs naturally you can find it everywhere and the exhaust of planes is trivial to your own sewage systems and moldy places. Why ban stuff just be free and let live. Don't be a finger pointing bossy banner of things. Planes are noisy that is what you hate. Me too but I also fly them. Lead controls detonation which is a good thing but I hate it because it gums up the works and fouls the plugs. Proper care around fuels and solvents is sufficient protection from chemical contamination. I digress... cool radios thanks for all of the vids love vacuum tube stuff.

@@westelaudio943 Logically, it would seem that way but I've read differing opinions about the hazards of working with lead solder. Some people won't even touch it. There was lead in plumbing solder until it was banned in USA around 1986.
@@acoustic61 AFAIK, there isn't even any (serious) debate about that. The lead does not become airborne. The fumes you see while soldering come from the rosin and from contamination. Shango has been told this time and time again, and yet, he choses to repeat this type of statement all the time anyways. Which in itself is not surprising, considering where he's from, even though he's definitely one of the least mental inhabitants of that dismal place. Of course, you wouldn't want that stuff in your water pipes, where it might get eroded and would contaminate the water downstream. Even though I'm not sure if I'd even worry about that, as I would think the limescale buildup quickly starts to inhibit the erosion process after the pipe is installed - but I'm no expert on that. I would say that, all be it it's kind of a cliché statement by now, people are way too soft and afraid of everything nowadays.
The Harpers is the smallest tube radio I own and have seen ever that use the full sized miniature tubes. There are some smaller models that use subminiature tubes like the Emerson model 747. The Motorola Pixie is in between those sizes and uses I think one full size miniature tube (I think 1R5) and others are subminiature.
Wondering if anyone can talk about older radios that have TV channel bands. I just got an old Sears unit (Model 800 272400) with TV1 and TV2 bands (2-6) (7-13). Of course TV is all digital now, but on TV1 there's a bunch of what seem to be FM stations, coming in clearer (super clear, no static,) than the regular FM band. The station is 91.5 FM, but the dial is up around 100 FM and just above channel 4 on TV1. Paid $1 for the unit. Had to spray all the switches, but it's a pleasant surprise that it's working so well.....just curious if the TV band is a more accurate tuning subset of FM??
no the tv bands are just regular FM at frequencies outside the radio spectrum (88-108). The FM audio for analog TV 1-6 was between 48-79mhz if memory is correct and for the higher channels it was around 180-220mhz. most likely the radio is way out of alignment or the band selection switch isn't working properly if you are picking up a station broadcast on 91mhz on the TV1 band, picking up a harmonic is possible but it shouldn't sound better than the correct frequency. Also FM usually does sound good with no crackles if your radio is in good order and the signal is good.
When they keep repeating "you got this" they're lulling the victim into a false sense of peace and security...Not too unlike the black widow & her saying 'take a short cut through my web...it'll be okay'.
be very careful with those '1.5v' tubes, its very easy to blow the filaments,, been there, done it... i advise not over 1.45v, the lower current 25ma types even more sensitive to over voltage,
Love this video! Oh just wondering, did you folks out there happen to hear about woke came to North Dakota? Couple days ago there was a street dance in McHenery ND a town of about 300 souls. A young man from nearby, 18 years old was there as was this 41 year old. The 18 yoa was a Republican, the 41 year old a Democrat. They talked politics for a bit, then the older fellow got in his car and chased the kid through the streets and alleys. The kid called his mom and said HELP! then the 41 year old ran him down and killed him. The 41 year old is out on 50,000 bond having been charged with Vehicular Homicide and DUI. ND is shocked, as are we in South Dakota where such things DO NOT HAPPEN! Both are native North Dakotan's. I used to work near there on the PD and know the area well, and the people are good folks.
General aviation is so slow to change. To get a new engine certified means going through a million hoops. There really only has been one new engine type successfully released in the last 70 years (Rotax). The Continentals and Lycoming are pretty much the standard and were designed for leaded fuel three quarters a century ago. Even cylinder head upgrades have unknown consequences on reliability - they say..They need a rocket somewhere.
Those civil defense/CONELRAD frequencies would come in handy about now.

I built3 of those Aes power supplies over the yeàrs all worked good except for the last one was 10 volts low on the last tap.

As usual Japanese made tube radios used leaky paper caps. I repaired one that had all the leak (beaky) Caps in one package and the plastic case breakage was worse than the GE you have there. I liked seeing the GE Tube radio working.
I have a red GE, same model. I use 8 9v's in series, and two D cells for power. It eats the D's, even alkalines fast, but the B battery lasts. My handle's pleatherette handle is peeling, but the case is not chewed. It listens to a 1 kw daytimer that plays oldies and local ads. At night, I like to open the back and barely see a bit of bulb glow. I show it to youngsters, and they don't get it.
In the 1990's Antique Electronic Supply sold a kit to build that power supply. Mine has lasted for years. Later upgraded to an ARBE-III but the old breadboard one still works too..

I really dislike, "You got this!” And, "I got you!" I never considered these phrases originated in think tanks or board rooms.
As far as use of these battery products I think the pace of advancement was quite rapid. Also the marketing probably hit many people convincing them they needed these portable radios since many prior to this would be line operated heater/radios.
I will sure enjoy the updates on Your Pakered Bell TV that you will soon put in to service 24/7. That will be cool to see. I hope it holds up Ok being its new old stock. I will be looking for the videos you will put ont on the set as weeks go by. The CRT should last a good long time being its very low hour & the rest of the TV as well. Excited for the videos You will have on that TV as it gets long time use for the first time.
IIRC the 3V4 and 3S4 are the same electrically, but different pinout's. The 1u4 is the more common IF tube, but some sets used the remote cuttoff 1T4.
3V4 and 3Q4, actually. The 3S4 has slightly lower specs (e.g. 67.5V g2 max, vs 100V for 3Q4/3V4), 3S4 and 3Q4 share the same pinout.

@@Crosley-1520 Thanks for pointing this out, I often wondered if there was any difference besides pinouts. Makes sense that the Harpers radio uses a 3S4 to conserve some power as well as run more ideally on a 67.5V battery rather than a 75 or 90V B battery.
in the UK DK91/1T4 was most common 50ma IF type, with DAF91/1S5 instead of the 1U5
@@KennethScharf not necessarily, i'm in the UK and have some each 3V4/DL94 and 3S4/DL92 and theyre definitely beam tetrode construction, except one 3S4, branded as mazda 1P10, is truly pentode , i have a couple of DL33/3Q5 and DL35/1C5 , but cant remember, may vary depending on manufacturer, most ones here are of mullard/philips manufacture
Today is a great day testing. testing. This is only a test. I'm thinking of making the trip from Camarillo to Torrance just so I can hear that and get my groove on. Klinky dinkler the snorgle spoimler. At night I can get BLM radio, but fortunately at 1590 there's KABC.
I built a 67.5v B battery eliminator I found online. I think from Phil's old radios. Costed like 10$ to make. Only downside is that it makes the chassis hot. But whatever. I know not to use it in the bathtub.

The best years were when most products were made in Japan and Hong Kong! I bought my two sons a Sony transistor radio each 35 years ago and they still have them which were phenomenal DX AM radios even to this day!

@@LarryBlowers I left a longer explanation further up in the comments, but it's on 1610 KHz, and it's most likely either WPHJ962 or WQED842, both of which are in West Los Angeles, beside highways, roughly 10-15 miles (15-25 km) north of Shango. It's a highway advisory radio belonging to Caltrans, only they don't broadcast any useful information on it, just that audio test loop. The transmitters only run about 10 watts. The other description above tells exactly where those two radio transmitters are.

So, I have a Magnavox micromatic 64 Solid State Phonograph console. Shango Might like this, it was all working. and I believe he stylus and cartridge was/is the original Stock Stylus and cartridge. unfortunately, I am from Iowa. so, shipping the whole stereo console (Stereo-Phonic) ... would cost me a boat load. so.... Since I am planning on moving away from here soon, it could just go to the junk pile. 😥

If those tubes ever have to be replaced, look into 1Ж24Б and similar "rod" tubes, over here these military surplus tubes are often used to substitute the much more expensive American tubes which were imported back in the commie era for use in the locally produced portable tube radios. They also should be more efficient than the original tubes, at least in the RF portion of the circuit. Said tube is an RF pentode drawing just 13mA at 1.2V.
I just subscribed. I've worked on few tv's. He doesn't have tools I used . My favorite tool was a, 2lb. hammer and a chainsaw. Maybe he will obtain these special tool one day. All kidding aside I know nothing I have watched other channels similar to this one and this one is the one O chose to subscribe to. He tells it like it is. I admire that. What I find ironic is these old tube radios are almost just as hard on batteries as the latest dab plus digital radios we have here in Australia. I put a current meter on a digital radio and the current draw was between 200 and 300 miliamps.
yeah these tube radios use less power than a phone does.
It seems that in the 30's Emerson, a New York company, built radios only good enough for local stations. The product was marketed at NYC residents, where there were plenty of locals.
Those radios were cheaper. Preamps were expensive.
It would be interesting to know what the test station is all about. I imagine it would be government run or endorced as it would cost a fair bit of money to keep it powered up and running. The selectivity on the GE seems reasonably good, maybe a little alignment will help the sensitivity, but for an unrestored portable it seems to work ok. I guess people wouldn't use a battery radio for DXing really. With the little Japanese Harpers radio, it could be the person that sent it to you put the cardboard in place to help hold the tubes during transport. It likely didn't have cardboard from the factory.
Iv'e tried listening to it on some SDR's in the Los Angeles area and can't hear it on any of them. Also done some google searches but can't find anything on it.

That GE sounds pretty good. Too bad about the case damage. Maybe can be fixed. That battery eliminator is nice to have. Had an electronics magazine in the mid 70's that had plans for an eliminator to early battery radios. I've got a Zenith Wavemagnet portable that needs gone through. Case looks great except for the missing handle. This unit can also be plugged in and used without batteries. With silver/mica disease in the IF cans, what is the best way to get around that?

Yes, it's a Caltrans highway advisory radio on 1610 KHz, only Caltrans isn't airing any advisories, just that audio loop. No matter, because most people would just tune to KNX 1070 for traffic reports.

Thanks to Nick B. for a field report, correcting that this station is on 1700 KHz. It's most likely still another Caltrans station, WPET709, at Imperial Hwy and La Cienega Blvd, near L.A. International Airport (LAX). That's very close to Shango.
Good news the FAA has just approved a zero-lead avgas for all spark-ignition engines.

I bet Shango already has the diagnosis on the Harpers set pinpointed and ready for the next video on it- leaky paper coupling caps, especially between the volume control wiper and grid of 1U5 as well as between plate of 1U5 and grid of 3S4! Also the electrolytic is probably bad, causing the "squoaching" between stations!

Lead occurs naturally you can find it everywhere and the exhaust of planes is trivial to your own sewage systems and moldy places. Why ban stuff just be free and let live. Don't be a finger pointing bossy banner of things. Planes are noisy that is what you hate. Me too but I also fly them. Lead controls detonation which is a good thing but I hate it because it gums up the works and fouls the plugs. Proper care around fuels and solvents is sufficient protection from chemical contamination. I digress... cool radios thanks for all of the vids love vacuum tube stuff.

Louis Rossman uses leaded solder on his repairs. But also has a fumes extractor for that same reason.

AFAIK, there isn't even any (serious) debate about that. The lead does not become airborne. The fumes you see while soldering come from the rosin and from contamination.

Which in itself is not surprising, considering where he's from, even though he's definitely one of the least mental inhabitants of that dismal place.
Of course, you wouldn't want that stuff in your water pipes, where it might get eroded and would contaminate the water downstream. Even though I'm not sure if I'd even worry about that, as I would think the limescale buildup quickly starts to inhibit the erosion process after the pipe is installed - but I'm no expert on that.
I would say that, all be it it's kind of a cliché statement by now, people are way too soft and afraid of everything nowadays.

The Harpers is the smallest tube radio I own and have seen ever that use the full sized miniature tubes. There are some smaller models that use subminiature tubes like the Emerson model 747. The Motorola Pixie is in between those sizes and uses I think one full size miniature tube (I think 1R5) and others are subminiature.

Wondering if anyone can talk about older radios that have TV channel bands. I just got an old Sears unit (Model 800 272400) with TV1 and TV2 bands (2-6) (7-13). Of course TV is all digital now, but on TV1 there's a bunch of what seem to be FM stations, coming in clearer (super clear, no static,) than the regular FM band. The station is 91.5 FM, but the dial is up around 100 FM and just above channel 4 on TV1. Paid $1 for the unit. Had to spray all the switches, but it's a pleasant surprise that it's working so well.....just curious if the TV band is a more accurate tuning subset of FM??
no the tv bands are just regular FM at frequencies outside the radio spectrum (88-108). The FM audio for analog TV 1-6 was between 48-79mhz if memory is correct and for the higher channels it was around 180-220mhz.
most likely the radio is way out of alignment or the band selection switch isn't working properly if you are picking up a station broadcast on 91mhz on the TV1 band, picking up a harmonic is possible but it shouldn't sound better than the correct frequency.
Also FM usually does sound good with no crackles if your radio is in good order and the signal is good.
When they keep repeating "you got this" they're lulling the victim into a false sense of peace and security...Not too unlike the black widow & her saying 'take a short cut through my web...it'll be okay'.

be very careful with those '1.5v' tubes, its very easy to blow the filaments,, been there, done it... i advise not over 1.45v, the lower current 25ma types even more sensitive to over voltage,

Love this video! Oh just wondering, did you folks out there happen to hear about woke came to North Dakota? Couple days ago there was a street dance in McHenery ND a town of about 300 souls. A young man from nearby, 18 years old was there as was this 41 year old. The 18 yoa was a Republican, the 41 year old a Democrat. They talked politics for a bit, then the older fellow got in his car and chased the kid through the streets and alleys. The kid called his mom and said HELP! then the 41 year old ran him down and killed him. The 41 year old is out on 50,000 bond having been charged with Vehicular Homicide and DUI. ND is shocked, as are we in South Dakota where such things DO NOT HAPPEN! Both are native North Dakotan's. I used to work near there on the PD and know the area well, and the people are good folks.

General aviation is so slow to change. To get a new engine certified means going through a million hoops. There really only has been one new engine type successfully released in the last 70 years (Rotax). The Continentals and Lycoming are pretty much the standard and were designed for leaded fuel three quarters a century ago. Even cylinder head upgrades have unknown consequences on reliability - they say..They need a rocket somewhere.
Probably these sets were used when families went on outdoor outings.
