Another excellent video to introduce what is a rather complex area of law conceptually. I particularly appreciate the historical background which explains how the concepts came about! It is when one relates to that historical background that the concepts start to make sense. One way that I look at it is that save for the monarch, no one truly owns physical land (in England and Wales anyway). Owning an estate and/or interest in land is like owning options, or derivatives; it is the intangible asset that one owns.

I was wondering if you might be able to recommend any texts that give more detail into the idea that "land was a gift from God"?

I personally would suppose it stems from the belief that God created the Earth and thus, the land. He's basically the ultimate tenurial land lord but the services he requires for that tenureship are tied directly to the divine right of the monarchy / church, who basically got to go "Well, I'm God's chosen so of course, this is a gift from him, to me. You all have to pay me to hang out on it, though. God said so."
